well started playing MMOs with EQ2, well 2 weeks in knight online before that....

am really looking forward to GW2, but not so much for the MMO part, but because it looks like a fun game, for a MMO Im way more hyped about archeage, which is very close to my own idea of how a MMO should be like. GW2 is "just another themepark" but it try fix alot of problems with themeparks and their singleplayer first MMO second style....which really is a good thing for most, since most just want a good game....its the first game that I can get people in my rl to play too.

Not sure if I'm an 'mmo vet' but I've been playing since killing Deputy Felp in Misty Thickett for FS Swords to sell. Anyway, I'm not hyped but I'm anticipating it. On another note, the whole genre has changed since 1999. People don't have time to be grouped up in sebilis for 8 hours to get a quarter of a level of exp, so I think the same thing will happen as it does with all new releases in the states. We all blow through the content quickly and get to the end game, complete it and are looking for more.

I guess that could be true now, despite me thinking by default that 'vets' are those of us who watched text based MUDs/MUSHes evolve into UO, EQ, AC and Meridian 59.

I suppose 'vet's', to me, would be anyone that's explored the various ends of the spectrum in the genre and has a wide range of experience in MMOs. Although, in this example I assumed he meant vets as in 'old, been there for the long haul, jaded over years of disappointment, use the term WoW-clone in almost every sentence as a derogatory term, lament the loss of  the 'old' and 'better' days', like me. So while it's possible some WoW players are now certainly vets, not every player that started with WoW is a vet.

There certainly seems to be a different outlook and expectations for those of us that grew up with this genre as something that always offered something different with each game and those who have only had WoW clones (see?).

I assumed with this post the OP was referring to the jaded old timer vets that constantly lament the loss of better days, and was specifically curious regarding our take on GW2.

Why don't people have time anymore? While your situation may have changed, the MMO demographic as a whole has as much time as it ever did, all that's changed is where you land on the spectrum now.

I think the problem is some people became so conditioned with the fast levelling speed and rate of reward intake that became prevalent since 2004 that they see anything which prolongs the experience as a negative. That's a horrible outlook to have in games that technically have no finish line. It's an activity/hobby that's technically endless, if it's a game one enjoys, why would they be in a rush to finish it? I guess it all comes down to WoW taking the basic shape of what MMOs were and creating an experience that mimicked it, but lost a lot of soul in the process, pushing MMOs more toward the video game side of trhings and further from eternal online fantasy worlds that our characters existed in.

If the journey isn't fun, playing online games that are essentially endless journeys as if trying to reach a finish line that isn't there will mostly be disappointing I would think.

Ok this is the only thing i am iffy about, i need to re-read this, because as far as i know its still tab target and 1,2,3,4 combat, just limited to skill sets.

The rest that you stated i am 100% in agreement with.

I do think that if GW2 tanks and is a smelly turd like TOR ended up. All of us who state how great DAoC RvR is we should go re-sub to that game ;) (wont hold my breath on that).

I think he was mostly refering to the monotonous rotation of traditional tab-target MMO, where you're simply allowed to perform your rotation and the enemy is dead. But, it is still tab-target, but at least it isn't monotonous.

I appreciate people being skeptical.  You should be skeptical.  Don't get fooled by slick trailers and promises.  Figure out how much actual footage you're seeing.  Is it just snippets?  Is it only a small section that the developer wants you to see?  If you're still unsure, by all means don't preorder it.  Wait for reviews.  Wait for a free trial or a beta.

I don't really care if anyone is buying into the GW2 hype or not.  All I would ask is that you have an open mind about it.  Be skeptical, be doubtful, but also learn what you can about it.  If you're hating on a game because of that one thing that one guy said, then you're only hurting yourself.

I've played MMOs since the early days of EQ and I'm very excited about GW2.

The first reason is the amount of demo footage.  You can see 5 zones, 3 cities, all the races, 7/8 professions, starts of personal stories, 3 open world boss fights, underwater combat, structured PVP, how the crafting, achievement and dye systems work.  Journalists have also played two dungeon paths.  There's going to be a flood of press information come Monday because they're having a press beta weekend (and the press have filming rights).

That's the big thing that I think separates GW2 from other games.  ArenaNet has promised not to talk about anything unless it's already in the game and working, and they've stuck to that.  I think people who talk about how disappointed we're going to be don't realize that we'd pretty much seen every aspect of the game except for WvW PVP.

Yes the game might still suck for whatever reason, or it might end up just not being fun, or not holding our interest, but GW2 is showing more than any other game ever as far as I know.

The other reason I'm hyped for it is because ArenaNet actually seems to give a shit how the game turns out.  They talk over and over about their iterative design process and not being afraid to throw something out (even an entire zone) if it's not good enough.  The flexibility NCSoft is giving them to be able to release it when it's ready is very encouraging.

i really want guildwars to be the next big thing  if only to remove the subs model from all mmos in the future

hard to compete with a game if your not offering much more and asking for £10 a month for subs

I am looking forward to it, and hoping the WvWvW rekindles some DAoC magic....As for hyped?  I don't get really hyped anymore.  People will say they are coming out with some stuff that looks like they will be doing things a little different, and more in line with whats in the development cycle now...But they then change their mind to be safe and make their mmos more 'wowish'....

So I am looking forward to TSW/GW2 atm, don't know if TSW will be good or not, but I like the concept, it could go either way.  GW2, if the WvWvW is great, then I am sold.

Future stuff, ArcheAge, WoD, EQ Next (they are promising something in vague detail that seems more towards a nice hybrid with vast exploration and not something on a rail from the little they have said it seems), and Copernicus (I hope they don't have to play it safe, if so, probably count me out).

Just as people have the right to love WoW (and I am fine with it, I don't hate on it, glad they have a place), and the current releases of super instanced, railed, boring daily grind, irrelavent harvesting/crafting, shallow/small feeling worlds...You could wipe all the AAA mmos released in the last 5 years and I wouldn't be missing anything.  Vanguard was the last MMO I could get into, it had a lot of problems, but they atleast tried to be big and different, and if not for the problimatic release, they may of pulled it off, if it was released closer to the 'fixed' state it was in a year later.

But I am curious, are any of you grieving, tired MMO vets, hyped up for Guild Wars 2?

If so, what areas of GW2 are you hyped about most?

You believe GW2 will become your new main MMO?

share with us your thoughts and feelings about the upcoming GW2 which seem to be drawing in lots of attention. Maybe this will be the MMO which finally pleases you. What you believe?

I'm sure that a lot of people will buy it and 90% of the buyers will be dissapointed, because they think that the game will revolutionize the MMO industry.

I am 100% confident that it won't. It's just another MMO in the bunch.

Hype (noun)
1. to trick; gull.
2. exaggerated publicity; hoopla.
3. swindle, deception, or trick.

I used to be until I grinded through GW1 trying to get all my stuff for GW2. It's really not my type of game, it's not bad but it's just not...I dunno, the mechanics I guess. I'd rather it be just me or a human group, don't like the NPC group system.I don't like the auto-travel system either.

I was all ready to jump in but now I'm going to pass. I'm sure it's going to be a good game for those who like GW style, it looks pretty solid.

GW2 is almost a completely different game than GW1.  Even if a person didn't like GW1 they should still check it out.  There aren't any permanent NPC companions in GW2 (except ranger pets).  Still has fast travel though.

I'm pretty hyped for it as a vet. By vet I mean I've probably 'almost' seen it all so far, not that I'm better at it or know better... I just have a lot to compare things to.

It's the dynamic questing system that draws me to it, it's never been done before on such a large scale. It's like questing reversal; so far we've seen static questing with a few dynamic events (CO, WAR, Rift) but now we will get to try out the opposite. The fact these dynamics are also all (or almost all) public events makes it even more promising and interesting.

These things being done like this, regardless of whether or not they turn out well, are new to the genre. Everyone keen on the genre, even if you think it's a terrible idea, should be trying it out due to pure curiosity imo.

Lol. Why not even gamers, who started with pong, or at least Pac Man. Point is.. it is irrelevant after all.

And by the way i started with pong 80-81(was available  quite some time before that) and then pac-man. ;)

I guess the OP just meant all those ppl, which are bored as hell from the last crop of games(or wow/eq clones, diku mud/mmos) and called them vets, which is a good enough naming for those gamers. Not more, not less. And noone, especially no vet, cares about being called vet or not.

I'm on a wait and see with gw2, I am tired of world of warcraft clones/wannabe's and I hate the general gameplay those types of mmo's entail now a days. I do know that Tera might be on my to buy list, and that Phantasy Star Online 2 is a definite pre-order title for me.  I like tera's combat system, pvp might actually take some skill in it unlike wow and its clones. PSO2 is a pure fanboy-ish purchaise, I loved PSO I liked PSU for the most part as well.. Well other than the whole synthesis system it used, and the fact most rare drops were mats, but general gameplay wise I enjoyed it immesely, then the mass hacking and stuff started.. I may be a fan of it, but I am not a idfiot like most swtor fanboys, i'll actually reconize the game has issues. Played it on the x360 till my headset broke then I quit lol , I got rid of my 360 because like all the current gen consoles it really had garbage for games, most of the if not all of the games I liked  to have played on x360 came out for pc, so I really had no use for the console.

TBH games have gone down the shittubes once the x360 came out, they just getting simplier and simpler and its like they taking massive steps backwards gameplay wise. I'd kill for a new kings field or some other first person rpg that'd play simmlarly, besides the piece of shit that is skyrim, though I did like oblivion. I hate skyrim because its been dumbed down for the idiot masses that play consoles. The game was ruined, mass efefct 2 and 3 are 2 more prime examples of games ruined by conslification.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

or

B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

There is a reason why I'm excited about GW2 but never did what you did. That's because I knew that, after a bit of research, both games are nothing alike. Heck, GW1 is not even an MMO, so I didn't see the point in bothering. If you are not getting GW2, just because you didn't like certain things like the Heroes/Henchmen in GW1, then you only have yourself to blame, for missing out on something truly great.

Not really, but i'll wait and see what people are saying/watch gameplay videos to see if it's something i might try 3-4 months after release.

Probably won't, but no way of telling until it's out.
