Most people don't want change, despite what a vocal few claim on forums, and TERA represents change. It's tragic really.

Not gonna pretend to speak for each and everyone, but I think it's far simpler than that: people who claim they want 'change' and 'innovation' usually don't mean that any change is good enough for them. There have been wildly different MMO's, with enough things different or changed from what they're used to playing, but still those are ignored by those people.

Some changes people with gaming taste preferences A like while others don't, other changes people with gaming taste preferences B like while maybe only some of group A will like it and others dislike, and so on.

Also, let's get realistic here, shall we? Besides the action oriented combat, TERA doesn't have that much 'change' in it. Still the same textbased 'kill this, get that' kinda quests, still the class and leveling structure, still the stereotypical and done-to-death fantasy theme and setting, still a full blooded oldstyle themepark MMO etc etc. So, for people looking for change in those areas and not so much in only combat mechanics, for those people who also crave change, TERA has little of that to offer.

Bottomline, it's all pretty damn relative, change and what's change enough. In the end, it's foremostly not about 'change' but about fun. Those who find the combat fun and entertaining enough might not care about a whole lot of other features being the same old themepark stuff, while others might find it not enough to entertain them for a longer period of time.

You are forgetting about territorial control PVP, Guild vs Guild PVP & Politics.

Blue Hole studio has also planned updates for SvS PVP and Dynamic Content.

Tera isn't another mediocre wow clone like SWTOR, there are sandbox elements and good sandboxy PVP.

Lol. Sorry, but that sounds as fanboish as the statements fanbois of other MMO's make, including the obvious ignoring of all the game aspects that are as traditional and as themepark as you can get. 'sandbox elements', 'sandbox pvp', man, the interpretation of what sandbox gameplay really is has gotten pretty damn loose these days -_-

Or maybe it's just how people get when they're defending 'their' game.

I don't see anything in the 'territorial control PvP' or 'Guild vs Guild PvP' that hasn't been done more and better in the past, no 'change' or 'innovative' about it at all. Politics sounds like something truly different and a 'change', but I'm sceptic about its positive contribution to the gameplay, only time can tell, it's getting the benefit of the doubt for now imo.

So no, the only thing I see is a full traditional themepark MMO with its own little distinctions - just like other MMO's had - with its only really major 'change' or difference the action oriented combat. All the other features, nothing much that we haven't seen before very frequently. But hey, that doesn't mean that the game can't be fun and enjoyable, MMO's don't have to be hugely revolutionary or bursting with all kinds of changes and innovations to still be hugely fun.

I enjoyed the combat and I really enjoyed the combat animations and such, but the rest of the game seemed....stale?  I got bored rather quickly and the animeish characters where a bit scary.   I liked the teddy bear, though.  =)

I played in the korean beta long time ago and combat was fun the first 5 minutes...got boring really fast.

There is nothing like the never gets old tab target combat used by wow and almost all mmorpg games...

The rest of the game looks like a generic asian mmorpg with asian style everywere, the difference is the combat and the graphics and performance that are really good.

I've seen videos of Blade & Soul gameplay and combat, it looked pretty good but I have no idea how the combat mechanics are. Are they the same as TERA, also action oriented? It reminded me of Tekken and Soul Edge sometimes (or maybe that was C9, has been a while since I saw those gameplay videos), but that's only first impressions how it looked on video.

Got my Mystic to 20 but I pretty much spam the same abilities

pet in -> Metamorphic smite > Metamorphic blast...repeat

or pet in ->volley of curse , curse, curse, blast blast..

I do have to move a bit and dodge but I dont feel that much different, maybe its the class itself.

So far, the world is pretty, characters are nice. I don't think I would want to level another one from 1-20 in any short time though. I am currently really considering if I should get it at launch. I probably end up picking it up after more contents go into the game. Also, some tweaks toward the pricing issues I have for crafting and other vendor items.

yes blade & soul uses similar system where you can dodge enemy attacks and no tab target.. thing about blade that looks fun is being able to do arial combos and such.. also the pace is much faster and even running around in blade is much much faster

Its almost fun as Amalur Reckonig , and everyone is raving about how that game combat is fun. And imagine that this is MMO

A genre that we connect with boring select and click shortcuts gameplay.

I mean the gameplay is like Vindictus, but with much more variety (in classes and skills) and its completely open world, actually massive MMO (something we forgot)

And there is no LAG , which everyone said its impossible to make twitch based MMO because of.

Plus Graphic looks amazing and runs amazingly well and optimised on any machine.

I dont care whatever you have to say about the game. Endgame, grind, themepark...

Fun gameplay tops all in my book :)

And twitch based , skill based PVP ... nice :)

Nice to hear this.. and coming from you I can trust its accurate also.. nice post keep it up.. Im keeping my Eyes on this one now... Thanx for posting this :) iv gotten a bit depressed latly about how bad things have gotten in this genre.. There might still be hope..

I saw some flight/jump travel and arial combat videos, if that's Blade & Soul and not C9 then it looked pretty good! It certainly looked fast and dynamic. K, thanks for the info, didn't know that about the combat mechanics.

But hey, that doesn't mean that the game can't be fun and enjoyable, MMO's don't have to be hugely revolutionary or bursting with all kinds of changes and innovations to still be hugely fun.

Let's put it this way

SWTOR is a 95% wow clone because it's exactly the same game with minor differences like companions, cut scenes and crafting gimmicks, endgame is same old, open world PVP is dead due to different leveling paths, instanced battlegrounds and Illium, which is just a mess.

Tera is more like a 70%, with traditional holy trinity and quest based progression but with territorial control and guild vs guild PVP, yeah that's not innovative but it's also not quite common, i mean the last WOW clone with guild vs guild PVP was AoC.

And sandboxy PVP means community driven PVP, kinda like what Lineage 2 had.

I wouldn't put "Action combat, territorial control, guild vs guild PVP and open world dungeons," as same old same old, but maybe that's just me, i still remember fanboys like Maverick and popinjay praise SWTOR because it had " Territorial control PVP with objectives on Illium" lol what a joke...

With all this things that games like Rift & SWTOR lack, Tera could be a nice filler for the people who are interested in ArcheAge, since it has the same focus on community driven PVP.

"Esport with tournaments is for hardcore pvp'rs that want to be competitive. Openworld PVP with ganking and griefing is for casuals that just wants their pvp mixed with pve from time to time."

Yuck, you picked the most boring class of the bunch to solo.

Mystic was given the maximum amount of stars for Support Ability. That should've been a hint right there.

Yes but for how long? Great combat alone doensn't keep you playing a game for years.

There's alot more to gameplay than just combat, it's all the systems in place that make up gameplay, not just the pew pew related ones.  (or at least that's my understanding of it).

Good combat is a necessary building block to make a lasting MMO but everything outside of fighting counts just as much and apparently this game doesn't offer much in that department. Excpet maybe territory wars, that looks interesting (but it's only an endgame feature so meh).

I am a fighting game fan.

I am actually just about to log off of the pc to go over to the PS3 to play Soul Calibur 5. I played Soul Calibur 1 for years. It was purely about the combat, and it was enough. Granted that was one of the best games ever, but combat CAN be enough. If it is done well.

TERA is not THAT good, but even a marginal story and social features when filled with the better combat it does afford and the fucking great graphics are more than enough to keep me and others playing.

TETRIS is ALL ABOUT GAMEPLAY. And people still play that. Chess anyone? Get some different pieces....

SO many examples where all there is is the gameplay and people stick to it.

Someone please make a good MMO.

i just wish combat involved more movement. doesnt have to be free movement, that would cause problems, but would be great if each attack had a directional variant. like, a sidestep version, a backpedal version, etc. so you could move while attacking, but in a very controlled way, so some classes might be able to move a lot, while others could only move a little, to keep it balanced.

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I tried to group but the party chat crits me way too often with jokes that are not even funny...

*arrow joke crits you for 99999*

*sex/boobs joke crits you for 99999*

*random racial joke crits you for 99999*

So I end up solo a lot LOL

Oh that sucks. It gets better ^^ Look forward to the CBs where the freebies trolls will be mostly gone.

I enjoyed mystic a lot! But only when I was being useful to someone else :) Like with my bud.

My biggest poblem so far would be not enough stuff besides leveling once game is launched. At the moment, crafting at low levels are not possible since its way too big a money sink that will drain low level character dry in no time. It means I will have to get to at least level 30 or more to start crafting. Leveling one character in CB is fine, but I don't know if I want to repeat this process. I got a lot of thinking to do :)

Well, reading that alone made me cringe my teeth, even though I know just fine what TERA is and what it offers. However, I must say that I consider Amalur a horrible fail! Even Witcher 2 managed to end up with a better combat system. :/

Where have the days of glory, such as those of Severance: Blade of Darkness gone? What about Dark Messiah of Might and Magic? Mount&Blade -series.. Even Skyrim managed to end up with an "okay" combat system, but I myself see nothing amusing or fun in an Fable-clone (Amalur) or TERA's system.

But these are just the opinions of an drunk viking, thank you for your time.

PS. I believe that the highest barrier for me concerning both of those two games was the graphics / setting / theme. Amalur being the high fantasy, over bright, shiny, everything feels like taken out of World of Warcraft and childish (even though there was some attempt at an evil dark plot?) and TERA being overdone with the oriental style. I can't play a game where there's "lancers" with twelve foot poles which seem to be weightless (Almost forgot those "berserkers", or what were they? With axes five times the size of a man...), and high elves in china dresses lapdancing while casting over cool magics, and not to even mention some child-like race which I see no point what-so-ever in (Oi, don't mention hobbits, they are awesome.)

Of course it all comes down to personal preferences and opinions, but... I prefer my fantasy darker and the more realistic, the better.

We´re all dead, just say it.

There really isn't a problem with crafting at low levels.  At first, I thought there was because I assumed the only way to get into it was to do the quest(s) provided, but there are alternatives.

These crafting quests don't require you to gather any materials.  You need only go to the crafting area, with an ample amount of gold, and you are able to level up almost instantly.  When you walk away you can craft items up to the high 20's.  Which assuming you are around that level, the gold required isn't that daunting.

The other method is to simply gather materials as you are playing and use those to craft.  Using this method, I only needed around 50 raw matierals and 3,000 gold and I was able to get to the same level as I could just using the quest.

I guess I kind of like it, as it give those who really look and investigate how to do things a break.  Those who prefer to have it handed to them simply pay ten times as much.
