MMORPGs are no longer about the mass multi-user anymore *sadly*

Think back to the MMOs with archaic combat (SWoWTOR, WoW, RIFT). How many do not get the concept of: move. out. of. the. fricking. fire?

And now they have to look at what's happening on screen, think fast, react?

That makes two hurdles a potential player has to get over. First is the art direction. Second is the combat.

Run & doge combat (priest not the #1 DD class...)

Running but not dodging combat (why didn't the freaking pet get the aggro as it should)

Yeah I like TERA a lot, pre-ordered it and probably will play it for the coming years as well ;)

This is the point !

Difficulty, Quests, Dungeons ect. can still be upgraded. But the grafic engine and combat not so easy. Look at SWTOR, game was good, but it pisses me of to have low fps as soon as I see another player...

Seems like TERA have a solid basement for a great mmo.

at least TERA went with the unreal 3 engine which runs very well with many people on screen.. I dunno why developers would ever make a MMO with an engine not designed for this such as hero engine... either way yes tera made good choice with the engine. Also just wanted to mention FINALLY no blocky shadows!!! after Skyrim and TOR I was getting sick of horrible aliased shadows

The engine runs better than I had expected. Even on my old core2duo with 4870 radeon it manages quite well.

Gameplay does get more exciting at around level 20. I'd advise anyone to at least continue playing till somewhere in the level 20s before making a choice to get the game or not.

True the combat is pretty good, but large open world? I was hitting invisible walls everywere, only one starting area, no mobs/gathering mats/anythign at all it felt so dead all around the city was it Velika* or something.

To me the game feels very very small nothing close to the "large open world" people hit the clsed beta cap in few hours level 22, in 2-3 days max people will be 58 which is cap at release. Starting an alt to go over same starting area will turn off most people so replayability on this game is impossible no one would like that.

I'm interested in knowing what people think is 'missing' from TERA when they say combat isn't enough? Seems to have all the basics covered.

Then again I care very little about things like crafting and PvP so maybe I'm just not seeing it. I do know any kind of true form of 'raiding' isn't in right now but they did confirm they have raid type content on the way.

PLEASE THIS.

Once you hit the first dungeon and the BAMs aswell as start getting a groove for combo-chaining and using your glyphs, combat flows excellent, becomes faster and difficulty increases a lot with all the BAMs and dungeon bosses.

Invisible walls are mostly in the starting area to keep you going the to the right places, it is empty around all the major cities because it makes sense, what city would allow deadly monsters right outside the walls...

Lastly you DO NOT get 58 in 3 days, 1-30 is fast, 30-40 slows down a bit and 40-58 hits you like a brick wall. Although it`s still pretty fast it`s not 3 days fast, what are you talking about lol.

I agree, the gameplay is fun.  At least for now.  I hope there is more depth to the later levels.  That being said, this game isn't all roses.  The community, at least in this weekend's closed beta is atrocious.  Nothing but WoW comparisons, vulgar language, racist remarks and so forth in all the chat channels.  It's horrible.  I would say it's even worse than AoC's pvp servers but only by a smidgeon.

I really hope this isn't going to be the community after launch.

You realize 4CHAN and Reddit exposed the IGN trial account thing and got like 2000 people codes...these are mostly trolls that will not buy the game, dont worry.

never good to judge an MMOs community by any sort of free beta.. especially when its basically an open beta.. I had the same chat in swtor during the stress test.. once release came i'd say 75% of that stuff went away

Yes, the community has really improved, (on EU servers) after the first day of sneak peak, lots of guild, party, technical requests being made, all very civil. Once you leave the starter island you see trading start up, the kind of parties for certain areas people want, guild logos, its been nice to see the community take shape.

You just have to wait for the 4CHAN and Reddit trolls to get bored and leave, they are not interested in the game, just causing a fuss.

It`s been absolutely remarkable today on the EU servers. Got in a few parties, did the SB dungeon a few times and grinded some BAMs.

Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere. -Carl Sagan

The combat is fun, especially once you start getting chained abilities and what not. However, the game has some things that deter from the fun factor. The quests are really boring though. And I mean really boring. They are all basically kill quests. Combine that with the fact that there is only one leveling path for all classes and races and you can imagine how horrible playing this game at launch will be when everyone is doing the same quests and needs the same glowies and monsters. Especially those named boss mobs. Each spawn point has like a 20+ person moshpit with every one just spamming their abilities hoping to tag the mob. Once the mob spawns, the whole moshpit decends on it with a vengence, completely obliterating it. No one succeeds though because apparently tagging the mob is not enough. You have to do a certain amount of damage in order to get credit for them kill. So these moshpits go on for hours.

The game also still has a bit of that asian MMO feel. As a matter of fact, the game feels a lot like Aion to me. There really isn't a huge variation in the mobs. At level 18, I got a quest to kill the same looking deer that I've been killing since my second quest. It wouldn't be that bad if I didn't have to kill those same looking deer in almost every quest hub. It seems that Tera has a deer infestation problem because everywhere I go, I get asked to kill some deer.

Too many different consumables. You got many different types of potions that sort of do similar things, bandages,  the charms to use by the fire to give yourself a bit of a boost. The fire thing is kind of a neat idea but the charms feel a bit pointless. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of things in the game that feel like they were just added in order to facilitate the illusion of more. Like the Engine of Mischief that has a chance to duplicate certain items or destroy them. The Lucky Eggs that you get as a quest reward and all they do is give you a random consumable. The stuff you get doesn't even make sense. At level 3, you can get a potion that has a level 25 requirement. What's the point in that? The thing is though that those consumables aren't even needed because the only time my HP fell bellow 50% was when i went AFK and a mob spawned next to me. Even then I didn't use a potion. Just killed a mob and went about my business.

Loot drops directly to the ground instead of staying on the body. It's locked to your character for a certain amount of time but it's still easy to miss certain items and as your running around, you see forgotten loot all over the place. Also, some of the loot makes no sense. One of the first quest rewards is a pair of boots that has a level 4 requirement, if I remember correctly. The thing is, mobs in the area can drop boots with the same stats but lower level requirement. This type of stuff continues to repeat through out the game. Very often quest rewards have a higher level requirement than the items with the same stats that just drop from the mobs.

Armor, while nice, does not have a lot of variation, with the exception of color. Weapons follow the same pattern as well.

The community is absolutely horrible. It's like all of the trolls from 4chan, reddit and 9gag have decended on the game in force.

This is all based on my experience up to level 18 and I hope that things change at later levels as I do enjoy the combat. The zones also look pretty nice and there were moments when I found myself thinking "wow, that looks pretty sweet!" So far, I would buy the game but it's not worth a subscription fee, in my oinion.

I play the games I like and don't dwell on the ones I don't, complicated philosophy I know....

Well all I will say is the combat of Tera has ruined the combat of all other MMO's for me. I will most likely be pre-ordering the game in the coming days.

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this.

I agree. The majority of opinion I am hearing in Aion right now is that people wont play it because of the target system and toomany 'fiddly buttons'. It scares them.

Ofc, I explain how natural, instinctive, and engaging it feels after the shortest while and simply how much more FUN it is, but I am up against an emotional barrier on their part.

Most people don't want change, despite what a vocal few claim on forums, and TERA represents change. It's tragic really.

I haven't been following this game at all but have lately enjoyed KoA combat style and since I'm a big Witcher and Gothic fan as well, I thought this game might be to my liking.

I've got a couple of simple questions for people in the beta. Is it possible to play with an xbox 360 controller? And if not, how many abilities are there to manage?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Is it still possible to get into the beta or will they be doing trials / open beta at some point?

Not gonna pretend to speak for each and everyone, but I think it's far simpler than that: people who claim they want 'change' and 'innovation' usually don't mean that any change is good enough for them. There have been wildly different MMO's, with enough things different or changed from what they're used to playing, but still those are ignored by those people.

Some changes people with gaming taste preferences A like while others don't, other changes people with gaming taste preferences B like while maybe only some of group A will like it and others dislike, and so on.

Also, let's get realistic here, shall we? Besides the action oriented combat, TERA doesn't have that much 'change' in it. Still the same textbased 'kill this, get that' kinda quests, still the class and leveling structure, still the stereotypical and done-to-death fantasy theme and setting, still a full blooded oldstyle themepark MMO etc etc. So, for people looking for change in those areas and not so much in only combat mechanics, for those people who also crave change, TERA has little of that to offer.

Bottomline, it's all pretty damn relative, change and what's change enough. In the end, it's foremostly not about 'change' but about fun. Those who find the combat fun and entertaining enough might not care about a whole lot of other features being the same old themepark stuff, while others might find it not enough to entertain them for a longer period of time.

Most people don't want change, despite what a vocal few claim on forums, and TERA represents change. It's tragic really.

You are forgetting about territorial control PVP, Guild vs Guild PVP & Politics.

Blue Hole studio has also planned updates for SvS PVP and Dynamic Content.

Tera isn't another mediocre wow clone like SWTOR, there are sandbox elements and good sandboxy PVP.

I've got a couple of simple questions for people in the beta. Is it possible to play with an xbox 360 controller? And if not, how many abilities are there to manage?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Is it still possible to get into the beta or will they be doing trials / open beta at some point?

Yup, works great for melee, not so much for ranged classes, though.

You can also sign up for the beta on tera.enmasse.com
