The latest video developer diary from Firefall's Mark Kern has been released. In the February edition, Kern discusses how player decisions affects "the roll out of new content". It starts with one set of features with developers taking feedback from players that will directly impact what comes next. The discussion also talks about how Red 5 is "organically" growing the beta player pool through what Kern calls a "GMail type" selection system. Find out more about Firefall. Sounds great, however, got tired of waiting for this game back in Nov '11.
"Coming December 2011." - No we meant we will be starting another set of closed beta key waves, not launching. (trolled)
Maybe the game will be Open to the public sometime late 2012.... |

yeah, it's all fine and dandy, but where is my beta invite? /edit though i really, really like "firefall is not just a game, it's a service" bit - thumbs up man! finally a dev who grasps what online gaming is really all about! (no, i won't use this as a cheap jab at swtor, no i wont) |

read the post ten times over. this is whay it's not out and this is why you're not playing. real beta testers like me, making sure they polish up what's already there before moving on instead of stacking more shit on top of it and shipping it.
obviously everyone wants a beta invite so they can play the game early, but those same people will be whining when the game comes out in the shape of say FFXIV. sit tight, and occupy yourselves with one of the many failed "ships on time" mmo's while waiting for the good stuff.
if you only knew the improvements made to the game from november to now...you'd be so damn glad it's not out and there's not 2 million childish voices drowning out the voice of reason on their forums, saying it's ready. |

Originally posted by Pilnkplonk If I wanted to be as sceptical and cynical as some people here are with games/companies they dislike (did somebody say TOR or FC? >.>), I'd say 'yeah, we've heard nice catchphrases before, with AoC's Gaute, WAR's Gaute, a lot of devs who were GREAT at saying exactly what certain gamers loved to hear... ring a bell?
Being me, I'll just stay neutral though and just say 'sounds nice, but let's wait and see how this works out in reality, if it really is as good as it may sound' |

I agree. FF could be a complete dud... but on the other hand it's completely free. So it's a fair deal there. It's not in their interest to hype up the game beyond it's reasonable fanbase, becuse it would cost them infrastructure and bad rep costs for $0 return. Remember, their model is not "lets hype everybody and sell this turd before user reviews hit the fan" (no, i won't use this as a cheap jab at swtor, no i wont.) They have a "service" model - "we offer a service and customers that happen to be pleased with it will fund it and reccomend it to their circle of friends." I find this much more palatable than "steal and run" crap. Actually they DON'T want you to play their game if you're not going to like it. Economically they have NO interest in hyping it. If they hype it beyond it's real worth, they'll loose money on servers and bandwidth, not to mention bad publicity. It's a reverse of box sale model and it's a bit hard to wrap your head around it.. and that's why mastodont companies like EA and SOE have real problems with creating a mmorpg with retention. Shocking, quality is more important than advertising? I'm sure that if someone from SOE /EA is reading this he is actually having seizures right now. In short, if I try it out and find that it's not to my liking I wont' feel cheated because I didn't have to spend 60$ just to see that it's not my cup of tea because the corps spent more time on PR than the product itself (no, i won't use this as a cheap jab at swtor, no i wont.) It's a free game. If I like it I'll gladly buy stuff from their shop and support it. If I don't, I haven't lost anything but a bit of my time and flat-rate bandwidth. So far it sounds like a really fair deal to me. |

I'm all for them finishing the game but I personally stopped checking FF updates after reading the "December is not launch" thread. A lot of people were mislead to believe the game would be much more open by then and that simply is not the case. In short, if the game was that far off being ready, they should have just kept on working and not even announce anything hype related or "Coming in 2011" Because it's 2012 and the game has fallen off a lot of peoples watchlist because they keep on being told "soon". |

And for the REAL BETA TESTER fony you are whobwe have to thank for the pile of garbage in the mmo community.
If you are sick of people bitching then talk to the game development tell them to stop saying shits gonna be ready when it is clearly not. |

Originally posted by Pilnkplonk Actually you ARE using it as jab on TOR and yes, you're right, it's kinda cheap. As for the rest, those are simply your wishful thinking hopes and dreams that elevate a company and a game to higher expectation levels than actual info warrants. Seen THAT one before enough times. Yes, it's F2P but they're a business and their business is making money to keep running, as each company's goal is that isn't a non-profit organisation. Or are you saying that all companies of F2P games like also the Asian ones are such benign institutes that won't try to pluck money from you? Or is it only the companies of F2P games that you like have that benign status in your eyes?
Words are easy and nice to hear, especially to people who look forward to an upcoming game of the devs saying those pretty statements. But only reality willshow how much of those words get to be realised and how much was just a wishing dream in the minds of the devs AND gamers. |
