http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/09/wot-i-think-kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning/ I haven't played the game, outside the demo, yet but this seems like a pretty good review. Just by playing the demo you can see how this game is drawing from various different games out there and bundles it all in one pretty huge game. Despite being huge, I don't get the sense its that open in the same way Skyrim is. Where you can go ANYWHERE. Still, this game seems to be fun albeit not a deep or engrossing game. |

I was skeptical at first, after reading all the glorious reviews. But having tried it myself I'm hooked. It feels like 3rd person Diablo/Dungeon Siege and has the loot to match. God knows I've spent plenty of time playing those games. The combat is really well done. Playing as a stealthy rogue just feels right.

I actually have to eat my words on this one. I had said the KOA was an OK game but not worth the $60. I broke down and bought it yesterday, had some credit on my steam account and figured what the hell. Might as well try it. Wow glad I did. Well worth the $60 bucks IMO now. Fun game for sure. Maybe not as deep as some RPGs but overall the combat is really good, plenty of rpg elements like crafting, decent story to it. And mainly its just fun. A good break from skyrim which i have over 200 hours in so far. Overall I would suggest KOA for anyone looking for a fun combat / action type RPG. Sure some stuff could be better I will admit. Needs some work on camera for sure if nothing else. If you have not picked it up and are on the fence like I was the I would say give it a try. Might suprise you. |

That review basically mirrors how I felt and what I've been saying about the game. It's not bad, especially for Curt's first foray into gaming, but "uninspired" is a perfect word for it. The combat is absolutely phenomenal, I love it, and I love the leveling system and the capacity for customization on gear, stats and skills. It's just the content of the game itself that's lacking. I didn't have to buy it, fortunate since the demo didn't leave me with the impression it was worth $60. A friend did, and I've been playing using his account. My initial review was a 6.5, but I think I'd give it somewhere between that and a 7 (on a scale of 1-10, 5 bare-bones average) now that I've played through the main storyline. The problem is all of that is because of the combat and leveling. I stopped reading the quests quickly in, they were cliche and boring, the characters were uninteresting, the hero is your typical silent amnesiac... Basically, for as much as there was to do in the game, I wasn't really motivated or interested in doing any of it. I felt like I'd had enough pretty quickly. And those treasure chest mini games were a pain in the ass. I died more to warded chests than monsters. When I finished Skyrim, I continued exploring the world. Buggiest game there ever was, and I still wanted to explore every cave and complete every quest. Same with games like Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect. All of those games got multiple playthroughs for me, not just to complete every quest and talk to every person but to explore both good and evil options. KoA was too busy trying to be everyone else to immerse me in its own unique gaming world, about halfway through I just wanted to rush to the end, finish the game and forget about it.

I feel like I overestimated how good the combat was, during the early game, looking at the skill trees. I thought I had a lot of different combos to look forward to, but turns out, its not really the case. There are only a few per weapon type. I wasn't expecting Ninja Gaiden or anything, but I thought there'd be a little more variety than there is. Really its more about timing in the harder fights, rather than any exciting abilities or combos, and that's better than most RPGs, I guess.. but not a lot better. When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |

They basically have the same complaints and a similar score to G4TV's review. The wording is different, but if you look past the aesthetic wording attempts of each review, they are basically the same. "The keys are in your hands. Nice review, I'll prolly pick this game up once the price lowers, don't think any pc game is worth $60. ________________________________ Oh my got!!! |

It's a good game. Personally I enjoyed Dark Souls, Skyrim & Witcher 2 more but its still a quality game. It's better than both Dragon Age II & Fable III imo. Ultima ONline (3 Years) |

Not nearly as good as The Witcher 2 or Skyrim but it's a fairly fun game. The camera bugs the heck out of me though, I hate it. |

I've been playing it with a controller and this game is awesome. I like every aspect of it, even the camera (i hate keyboard and mouse set up though). I knew this was going to be the case after playing the demo on both console and PC. The story gets interesting after the first couple of towns. Before that it was kind of boring. Not sure if that's because I played through it like 6-7 times, or if it's like alot of other RPGs (except the whole waking up in a pile of dead bodies hehe). I absolutely love the Might tree. I've only died three times on hard. I think there are plenty of combos and skills, you just have to spend your points to get them, which in some cases aren't the best thing for your level.
I gave Skyrim a 10/10 after some modding, KoA I would give an 8.5 (original score I gave Skyrim until I modded the pee out of it lol). Who knows, maybe we'll see mods for this game too :)

Amalur is a great title... I wonder if they are going to move this combat system to the MMO. It could be very interesting if they pull it off. |
