If my MB has PCIe 2.0 will it run a vid card that is PCIe 2.1?
Without messing with the performance. 790Gx chipset |

Originally posted by Palladin Yes, it it is backwards compatible and there will not be any noticeable performance problems. 2.1 is mostly a step towards the recently released PCIe 3.0 specifications. There also appear to be some 'old' motherboards with PCIe 2.0 that aren't compatible with 2.1. Most of those can probably become compatible with a firmware update. |

PCI Express is backward compatible, so yes, it will work, but as PCI Express 2.0. 2.0 and 2.1 are the same speed, anyway. The difference is some technical features that I've never seen explained, so they're probably not a big deal. |

I am thinking about upgrading from my radeon 4850 to a newer model radeon vid card like maybe a radeon 5970...are the power connectors the dame on these? When I bought the 4850 I was totally suprised byt the power connector and had to buy a whole new power supply to use the radeon 4850. I don't want to be blindsided like that again. I spent a whole week without a comp till i manage to scrounge enough loot to buy the Power supply
These days though its time that is in short supply not cash. 790Gx chipset |

You probably don't want a 5970 unless you get a really good deal on it. Dual GPU cards are generally not a very good deal: two regular video cards of the same generation (in that case, 5870's) are generally faster and cheaper than a single dual GPU card would be. That being said, no video card out there takes more than 2x 8-pin PCIe connectors. From what I can gather, the 4850 is a single 6-pin connector. |
