So I started playing STO since its now F2P.
I really wonder, this game has all the features of SWTOR, the only exception being the Bioware dialogue-wheel in cutscenes and conversation-system. Pretty much everything else is equal or better (full space combat).
Companions: check (up to 4 in missions) Companion customization: check Crew skills: check Crew missions: check Cutscenes: check story missions: check VO: check (even some big names there, like Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy) "on the move" combat: check (even has an over-the-shoulder shooter mode) your own ship where you can place trophies and walk around in: check space combat: check (even better than TOR because its not on rails) customizable skills for ground and space combat: check way better character-creation: check open raids (ground and space): check open pvp (ground and space): check daily events changing from hour to hour: check instanced zones: check
It even looks alike.
I'm perplexed. |

It is not Star Wars. You also forgot it has less static combat. Moving actually increases your chance to not be hit by an attack. Edit: NVM, I see it in your OP now. BOOYAKA! |

STO had a bad start. i joined as a f2p too and i am haveing a lot of fun. it also the only game i ever bought something in the cc store. no other f2p game was good enough to spend money in its shop (in my oppinion). like i already worte: its 75% starfleet command and 25% mass effect. fits perfect for me. |

It's because STO fu***ed up launch... It was even less polished and finished than SWTOR was when launched
But overall I agree, STO now is pretty cool MMO, the third-person-shooter feature in ground mode really helped it IMHO I'm also glad that despite it's F2P, most of the stuff is accessible (apart from AoC for example) without paying for it edit: Oh and as others stated, it's not OMZG STAR WARS FROM BIOWARE!!! IM GONNA S**** MY PANTS! LET'S BLINDLY BUY IT! even tho I guess Star Trek is pretty popular in US as well.. |

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this. |

Before launch I made a couple of posts comparing SWTOR to a Cryptic game, making the point that if Cryptic had been the ones making it the fans wouldnt be gushing like they are (were). I compared it to both STO and CO, though both of those Cryptic game have better character models IMO, and said that Cryptic could have made the same game as SWTOR for a quarter of the budget. OFC I got flames and rage and plenty of reports for 'trolling'. But, yes, I agree. It all comes down to fashion I think, Bioware are (were?) 'in' and Cryptic are 'out', and emotional connection to tribes and brand. Too many folks just adopt the 'credible' opinion of what they see the 'leet pro' guys writing on the interwbz. |

Good point. Downloading now. Basically the game hit the snag of being ST IP and not having a space game similar to EVE. The groundcombat was a little too simple as well at launch. It also picked up rage by osmosis about a whole bunch of emo crap involving the developer.* Since then other games have launched and it seems to have proved that getting a game right has less to do with budget and more to do with intension. Like you say, it compare with ToR in many respects and it F2P now although it still has a sub option like all Cryptic games. *See later post for examples of emo crap There is NO miracle patch. 95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch. Hope is not a stategy. |

I also decided to give it a shot and I am enjoying myself alot...eve was a bit too slow for me but this is satisfying my need for a space mmo.. the space combat i think is my favorite part.. and the shooter mode for the ground combat adds a bit more entertainment... it also seems pretty active with events.. so far it seems to be a great FREE to play game |

cryptic sucked. and that space comabt is way way to monotonous and so is ground combat by far. Dont care what you say, I have more fun in SWTOR then I ever did in STO and I wanted to like it. Also only one faction in STO, I am still hearing that Klingons are treated like a retarded step child. |

Its seems good at first, but after a few days you realise that your in a fishtank.
So much potential from this IP that crpytic screwed up just to make a fast buck.

I recently gave STO another shot and find im having some fun with it. I dont know if im "gushing" over it but I play it for a break from the fantasy genre and it seems to be growing on me. With F2P I can play it now and then and see what develops without thinking whether I should sub or not. IMO its a better game now than it was 2 years ago.

Originally posted by fony lol, yes. Apparently so ! Another MMO I saved myself from by not getting caught up in the hype by just waiting a month and seeing how it goes. You only have to wait a month and the truth comes out. Year or so later STO is still just as rubish, and a year from now SWTOR will still be rubish too. |

Originally posted by Vesavius This is well said. I wish we had a 'like this post' button like on the RIFT forums. I'll QFT instead. I'll echo what others have said: Bad launches aren't easily forgiven. AoC, Vanguard, WAR, and other games still live under that stigma. Also the game is F2P / "Freemium" and, for me, that is pretty much a deal-breaker. If it was just a free "endless" trial to level 20 like WAR then I would be all over it, but I got burned by Turbine's Freemium conversion of LotRO, and to a lesser extent SoE/EQ2, and I don't plan on repeating that. I don't like the cash shop store exclusive item business model where your sub buys you 70% of the game and the rest you pay more for, a lot more. This game might be good, but no game is worth the money and time for that, at least not for me. |

"instanced zones: check" It may be a personal preference thing, but I cannot believe most serious MMOers would consider instancing (outside of maybe raid instances) as a positive. For me this is always a deal breaker. I was playing EQ2 this past week and having fun with it until I had to pop out of an instanced dungeon and it gave me the choice of porting back to ("Frostsea or Frostsea 2"), my desire to continue died right there. Open world instancing, I'll pass. A big part of an MMO for me is feeling like I am growing and helping players around me, and open world instancing kills this immersion factor. I think the fact that STO has so much in common with SWTOR is a big reason why no one is gushing, and I am sure once the honeymoon is over, not many will be gushing over SWTOR either. |

Originally posted by sadeyx Maybe that wasn't clear from the OP but i did play STO on launch. Fuck, i bought the special collectors edition with com-badge and shit. (was thinking about lifetime sub too)
I played for around a few weeks and decided the game was broken and monotonous as fuck. Comming back to it, it has a completely different feel from what i remember experiencing, its actually much -much- better. Its still not perfect mind you, but dear god do you feel the improvement from release. Not to mention now after what, 6 seasons of updates, the game finally has enough content to hold your interest.
For a F2P title, its well worth my time. Actually, i think i'd put it on second place on my favorite F2P titles-list so far. |

Originally posted by Hopfrog I agree, i counted it in because its another similarity to TOR, not necessarily a positive of the game itself. Yes TOR is a bit more "open" as in the zones are bigger, then again STO has more planets to visit so it needs more smaller instances rather than 10 large ones. Technology isn't there yet to make non-instanced spacetravel available to players, well unless Inovae and Quest for Earth finally comes out that is, but like thats gonna happen... |

Interesting, I was unaware STO had turned it around. I will have to give it a shot. |

Originally posted by AdamTM I dont disagree that it has improved and has more content... but your reaction is short term, it doesnt last. You cant play a game for a day or so then go raving about it on forums, you have to play it solid for a month. But I'll bet it wont even last you the week |
