I have been thinking about this and I am really, super curious, if anyone out there would play an MMORPG where there was no magic?

yes i would play a medieval themed mmo with absolutely no magic as long as the melee combat was fun. something along the lines of Mount & Blade. there are also sci-fi mmos which dont have magic like EvE and many people play them. i would definately give it a try. |

I am currently designing an MMO where only a small portion of the playerbase would have significant magic. However various crafting classes can provide some items that can fulfill some magic functions. Still magic would be significantly more powerful in most cases. I voted other. I think that in the case of a game with no magic I would need a similar level of crafting to create variation in fighting as the one I am making. Although I guess thats not very descriptive. I hope that no magic means no healing. Healing is the bane of MMOs. |

I voted No, for if the game setting takes place in a sword and board world.
but sci fi, and Real life, themes, I wouldnt mind. |

For me its as simple as if i wanted normal every day stuff i would play sims. After working all day with people i like to get away from the RL stuff . Magic to me is what makes up a fantasy realm. |

I'd love to. Depends on the gameplay though. Optimally I'd expect something like Mount and Blade combat. |

The Iron Heroes setting for D&D 3.5 was , for the most part, magic free, and I *loved* it.
I would give any game without magic using classes a good long look. "As a foulness ya shall know them." |

I would play it. But to or have not magic is not the issue. |

Why not? I already have. A Tale in the Desert didn't have magic. Neither does Pirates of the Burning Sea. Uncharted Waters Online has only a tiny bit, and you'd have to look awfully hard to find it. |

I assume you mean a fantasy MMO as opposed to sci-fi, post-holocaust or historical? I LIKE magic in fantasy MMOs. It's part and parcel of Fantasy. |

I'd love to see the DAOC combat mechanics divorced of any the magical elements. No spells, no mystical abilities, no invisibility, no stuns, no mezes, no run effects, no pets, no active healing and no buffs. Cal it minimalist melee. I've always thought DAOC had one of the best representations of the melee classes, especially the sword and shield. (There was still too much emphasis on 2hand weapons and dual weapon use for my tastes, but that's just me). About the only thing I thought they 'missed' was thrown weapons (axes, spears, javelins, daggers, even rocks) and slings. Tie fatigue and movement together to prevent the gigantic running circular battes, and sign me up. Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority. |

So a sword and board game might do pretty well if it was done right...that is awesome to know. :) ![]() |

I normally won't play a caster in the MMOs that do have magic, so... YES. Sandpark: The MMO gamer's way to say "I have no clue what I am talking about." |

Personally not a fan of magic in an mmo. There is something that just seems a tad silly and childish about firing off colourful spells from the tips of my fingers (or anything remotely similar). I have a hard time taking my character seriously with all that Rainbow Brite shit. "My fighting style is kneeing people's face" -Wanderlei Silva |

It's all magic, whether that's what you call it or not. |

LotRO had minimal magic, at least when I played (beta). Even the most magical class in the game only threw what could be called little molotovs.
And SWTOR has magic, so it's not like fantasy = magic, scifi = no magic. Eve Online 14 day trial - Will you make your mark? |

Originally posted by waynejr2 Same here. Many of the non-MMO games that I play don't have magic, but I don't separate them into piles of "has magic" and "doesn't have magic". It's not a big deal if a game has no magic. ...but it's also not a desired feature or selling point. |
