http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO7XhaTGDYg This video has probably been posted several times now but I would like to bring back up again. When I first heard that Juggernaut EA/BW was doing a SWTOR MMO.... this is what I was hoping for. All that potential wasted on a WoW clone.... when it coud have been the most immersive, high tech, realistic world that anyone had ever seen "Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month" |

Originally posted by Icewhite Well you can download the Demo to play around with... but its like one guy or something working on it... I think he/they are hoping that a big company will buy the engine from them cause they dont have the manpower/resources to make an MMO from it... My god... BW had 800 people working on SWTOR.... imagine if 800 people had been working on this instead of WoW 2.0 "Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... not really the best tech demo imho looks like eve(the outerspace parts at least) http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/339443/Video-FollowUp-Guide-For-Enhancing-Graphics-and-Performance-in-SWTORSorry-still-Nvidia-Only.html |

Looks awesome, and I would dearly love to see a proper Elite MMO. And yes, EA didn't impress with their lack of vision.
But there is no gameplay here. At the end of the day gameplay is king, not graphics, impressive technology or interactive movies. I would rather see an instanced SW with better gameplay, than the current game using this infinity engine.

Originally posted by illorion i agree. i only disagree with a little detail.... the WoW 2.0 a 2.0 version should have been improved, and WoW is still superior for what it is, it's only missing cinematic voice overs "from famous ppl".

Originally posted by illorion Exactly. It's one of a couple of hundred systems that can be used to make a limited demo. Why isn't it live? The same reason that most vaporware fails to find a market--good for making demos, bad for making games. |

Originally posted by lowendahl Well this isnt really a game... just an engine and a tech demo made to show off said engine... the people that made this are not a game company.. just some talented folks that made an engine... hopefully someone will make an mmo out of it... but I doubt it... apperently driving the genre into the ground with clones is the "in" thing "Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month" |

Originally posted by Icewhite Look all Im pointing out here is that a seemless planetary engine exist and can be done by amatuers... so, therefore, there is no reason to keep doing the same thing over and over and over again when the tech exist to do something new and better. I know, I have heard of it before. Last I heard there were apparently talks about doing a MMO with some company. We'll see though. I fear like so many indie projects it will fall victim to its own excessive ambition. I would be happy to see even a single player game using this technology (if it is a good game).
But what I was getting at is that this engine could be used to power the same on-rails space game that SWtOR has. If would look better than what we have, but it would frankly not be much of an improvement. Or it could be used to travel around planets and plop down moisture harvesters, rescue colonists from forest fires in the best choplifter style, and be a sandbox where you build your own colonies and space stations, and have actual adventures in far-flung locations.
Or it could be the usual themepark where you kill 10 of X and click 3 of Y, only bigger and with better graphics. Level-based, skillbased, FPS etc...
What sort of gameplay is offered through the engine is what matters the most to me at least.
But eventually someone *will* have the guts and skill to break the mold and they will have a runaway succes that no one imagined, and we'll have alternatives to WoW with different skins.

What a surprise. Another thread where someone who doesn't even play the game second guesses the developers and declares what the game they're not playing "should have been".

Seriously it's 2012 why can't we have an MMO with space and planets that are open and fully explorable. You could hand make some stuff and then just use procedural content generation. This fits Star Wars so well. SWG was closer to this* than SWTOR actually when SWG did a lot of things (race selection, housing, space, etc) better than SWTOR you have to wonder wtf they did with the money. *Fly to and take off from any point on any planet seemlessly. How to post links. Check it Archeage |
