Yeah, how's that working out for them, and what is the longevity of this strategy?  The problem is that story cannot replace gameplay in the long run.  It has done a great job of hypnotizing some people who like stories written for kids/teenagers, and those who have never played a real story-driven single player game.  More and more people are getting sick of it, spacebar hammering to get through it, and realizing that the actual gameplay, the part where you go do things, is lackluster to say the very least.
I'm happy for those who like it as is.  The number of people who hold that opinion is quickly shrinking.  This game will ultimately turn out to be a short-term distraction for most, and a complete fail for many others.   It will continue to make money as a niche MMO.  I don't think that is what Bioware was expecting, but it will be the case.

My kid's story  led to me shooting a father dead...right in front of his son who I then forced to take a shuttle to Korriban to be made a sith against his will.. Later..... watched as a sith inquisitor poisoned a small colony of rebellious slaves.. What kind of stories do you or will you read your kids at night?

If they don't behave, these are the stories they get.

In the old days when population was calculated they said any time when you have every time zone playing the same game which used to be in Everquest and Final Fantasy XI days that it was 20 % of the population that is a fifth so that figure of 350k is very very good. You have to be quite clueless to think all 2 million will log on at the same time.

Not to throw a wrench in the cog, but the more time zones the lower the peak ratio.

If you look at a generic tracker like steam, which has 24 hour zones, its 17-19%. Then when you look at Blizzards post lauch time periods for BC and WOTLK in Asia,  out to one month, it reaches 25-30% peak.

Littles law  may not fully apply here, but its hard to fathom that SWTOR, being only in EU and NA wouldn't have at least a 25-35% rate in its first 3 weeks of launch.

Keep going if you continue playing with numbers and bringing imaginary percentages I'm sure you will be able to prove whatever you wanted.

That said, "end game" logevity is a valid question. I'm not there yet.

what choice is that when u can pick any of 123 and still go on like anyone else doing exactly same quest and follow same story like everyone else.

The choices I make ingame:

1. open up new quest lines and determine my future relation with my companions. (i.ex: new quests with companion romance -> you can even get married)

2. determine the gear I wear depending on my light/dark level

3. determine if I will meet an NPC again in the future or not (If I decide to kill him I won't. If I allow him to live I will). This happened several times already.

4. determines if an NPC will contact me by mail or not; if NPCs will send me money or stuff by mail or not; and also changes the content of the mails I receive in my inbox from NPCs.

5. determine the amount of time my companions spend on crafting, gathering and quests I send them to do. The more a companion likes you the faster he will be.

6. determines my character's physical appearance (face and eye color will change depending on light/dark level).

7. the light/dark level also sometimes determines how NPCs talk to me.

To sum it up, RPG is greatly enhanced as you can really chose how you want to role play your character, how he will reply to quests and talk to people and this will also have an effect on him, on his future, if he falls in love or not, if he gets married or not, on the way he dresses, and on the way he physically looks.

swtor theoretically passed the 2 million units sold.

Not sure if that was posted, but for a game that is not even a month old, it's pretty good no?

Discuss

What does that mean? Aion had more then that many units sold and it is already converting over to the F2P model, 2 million sounds like a lot but nowadays it isn't, there are a few more P2P games that had just as many and more units sold that went F2P just in 2011 alone.

eu and usa only for aion number?HELL NO!ea/bio number are for eu and usa only they have yet to release the game in asia!when it release in asia they will beat aion number easy!

and that site you linked only consider what it deem global market (usa,eu and japan)i dont know about other people but as for me isnt there 2600 million people in china and india alone?ignoring that part of global market?i bet lot of asian game maker are very happy that their small 2600 million possible costumer are ignored by corporate!

This made me laugh, sorry to tell you but Star Wars has some fans in Asia but no where near what there are in the US/EU, you won't get anywere near the numbers Aion got in Asia for a genre that isn't even that big in Asian countries. Btw dumbass that link is from the person i replied too i didn't link it, way to fail in all your points. As you say once they do go into the Asian market i guarantee you the numbers will not be as big as you think, Star Wars is a Western cult icon, it has no were near the following in Asia like that craptastic game Aion did, so your logic is flawed.

Gonna disagree here that 2 million sold isn't much for NA/EU, especially since it's only box sales not even digital sales added to it. I think no other MMORPG in the west had those numbers, most if not all stayed under the million sales for their launch month. Aion had one of the highest in the west and still stayed under a million sales in total in the west in the month it was launched here. Retention ofc is another matter, but as far as launch sales of a new MMO goes, this far surpasses all the rest.

I see myself as a pretty good judge of mmo's both sandboxes and themepark alike.

I bought EQ1 and played for 3 1/2 years until they started changing crap with luclin.

I bought WoW and played until a little after BC came out(2 years-ish) because I knew where they were going.

I bought warhammer online, I quit within a week.

I bought Rift and quit within a week.

I bought LOTRO and quit after Mirkwood came out because I saw where it was going. Moria being the pinnacle.

I bought SWTOR and am still playing and can see myself playing until they nerf the game more than it is and add cross server dungeon finders, damage meters, gear scores, and purple crystals at the Bioware store. Whats my point? My point is at this point it is a very good game. But history shows that if Bioware is anything like countless other developers they will ruin this game with "accesibility improvements". Does this game have anything different than others? Nope, except the story-telling. There is challenge(after level 30 in pve) and in pvp. So if Bioware doesnt ruin the game the only thing else out there that can is a GW2 or an Archeage, or a Embers of Caerus that works well.

MMO sandbox games are as exciting as watching paint dry.

1/11/12 1:27:06 AM#53

Yep it is closng amy minute now......

2M is awesome.  Glad to see it.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

funny how when dealing with mmo's these numbers never matter because they always have a huge number of people who bought the game and didn't resub even before their free time was up because the game WAS that bad. Ahem. This was the reason that WoW created it's level 20 cap free trial.

ONLY? People have lives, have to work, have not to work, live in different time zones...there are probaly hundres of people logging in and out of the game every couple of seconds. 350,000 concurrent players is pretty good.

How the hell are people still posting links to vgchartz???

vgchartz is a fake sales site run by some little kid Xbox fan who use to post fake sales numbers on neogaf. He was so bad a trying to convince his made up inflated Xbox sales numbers were real that they:

* Perma-banned him from the forums

* You're not even allowed to mention his name or site

After getting perma-banned for spreading lies about sales he ran off and created his fake game sales numbers site. He sits in his mom's house typing made up numbers into his computer and uploads them to his sad little website. He is so dumb that he thinks that typing out his fake sales numbers to single digit precision makes them look more legit.

When real numbers come out from NPD and other sources he scrambles to change the numbers on his site to try to avoid being caught in his lies.

The only legitimate sales numbers will come from either NPD or EA themselves.

I suppose that vgchartz wasn't that far off....

Now it's official.  2 million copies sold.

It's not clear when they hit the 2 million mark.  If they had sold 2 million as of 1/10 I'd have to believe they would have announced it then.  I wonder if it's safe to assume they are the fastest MMO to sell 2 million units.

Boggles

I give up some people are just too hard headed to get it.

Even if they did sell 2m which they " can not " confirm, they promised investors much much more.

See the problem?

Investors have lost confidence and are dumping shares, it takes those investor dollars to pay for game expansion.

All those big promises Bioware has made need to be paid for, I know some of you think that those expansions and added content are paid for by your monthly subscriptions but you would be greatly mistaken.

Development even after market development, is VERY expensive and takes investor capital. If you lose investor confidence well it has happened before..

The number of people who are complaining about the game is going up on all the gaming forums like this one and at the official forums.  I give this game 3-6 months before it's sitting right where Rift is.  It will still make them money, and some people will love it, but it will fail to grab a huge market share.  They would have to start immediately releasing some serious game-changers to turn this around.  And I'm talking about features that stop focusing on the story, and concentrate on GAMEPLAY which they should have done from the beginning.

i agree, this game seems to have less content than rift..only seems to have less..they really need to do a shed load of content to keep the peeps happy.not to mention sort out all the other probs..pvp and whatever else needs sorted.
