I'm not sure whether I should play or not, because my friends say it's really boring and it sucks, but I've seen gameplay and it seems really fun. Plus, it's F2P. Have any of you guys ever played it? Is it good? |

How would WE know? We don't know you, or know what you like. Just try it, since it's F2P. |

While I feel that's LotRO's best days are behind it, the game is still worth playing if you've never played it before. Despite my issues with the direction the game has gone since it went F2P and WB's buyout, the game still has a lot going for it, especially if you're a fan of the books. <3 |

Originally posted by h0tangel99 I've played since one of the earlier closed betas. I think it's a good game I I think it's a better game if you are interested in tolkien's books and lore. My suggestion as far as your friend goes is to seriously look at the types of games he finds exciting. Especially mmo's. Then compare to what you find interesting. From that compare it to lotro The combat is not fast paced, there is a bit of reading of the quests, it isn't a fantasy world where you are going to find a lot of fantastical creatures. Lots of wolves and boars. However it's got orcs, goblins, giant lizard things, etc. The world is very beautiful. The avatars are ok. It's very story based. The pvp is not a focus. Magic isn't a huge focus either though the rune keepr sort of goes against the lore. Yet it is a pretty fun class. If you have some patience and love immersion or want to pick up a musical instrument then this game might be for you. Perhaps you can tell us of games you hated/loved? That could also help. |

Originally posted by Sovrath Thanks for the reply! A lot of the things you say in this comment, though, make me not want to play it :P I mean, I NEVER read dialogue, and PvP is one of the main things to do in MMO's for me. Some games I have loved are WoW (everyone has loved this game at one point) and RuneScape (don't judge) and didn't like SWTOR, or Guild Wars 1. (However, GW2 looks great) |

Originally posted by dreamscaper I agree with this. I started playing back in 2007 in the games first year so ive seen how the game has changed. But i have to say despite the changes the game is still great, if you can find a class you really enjoy. The game is one of the better F2P games out there though being locked out of quest content in certain zones till you buy it at the turbine store can be a little annoying, subbing to the game removes this issue of limited content whilst levelling. Its definately got one of the nicer communities of any MMO i have played, theres next to no competative nature or elitist 'pros' jumping about the main hub showing off. Its crafting system is great, not unlike most mmo's but is more fun for some reason, can't quite place my finger on it. Lore adds a lot of depth to the game if story is your thing this is the game for you, its based on the books not the films so don't expect to bump into Orlando Bloom or hear Sir Ian and Ellijah Wood any time soon. All in all id say that if you don't like to pay for a game and want a game with good graphics, and excellent community and an overall enjoyable gaming experience id say give it a go. Id actually say its one of the more hardcore mmo's out there at the moment, its pve isn't that dumbed down (i can't speak for Isengard as i haven't played) but its definately fun and worth a go. In my own experience im an MMO jumper as i find it difficult to find an MMO i can truly settle in, and the only two that have ever held my attention for months without me actively searching for the next world to jump into is World of Warcraft and LOTRO.

Originally posted by dreamsofwar Thanks of the reply. I LOL'd at the Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood part :D From readig all your guys' comments, this game just doesn't really feel for me =\ I guess I'll just have to keep looking for a good MMO to play as SWTOR was a let down :( EDIT: I think Guild Wars 2 looks very promising so I can't wait until that game comes out :) No monthly subscription fee either. |

Kind of have to agree with your friends aswell. I played for almost 3 months, did try to like it being an lotr fan but quit because it was just so dull. Also really didn't like the fact that there was no character customization beyond what haircut to have. There wasn't even a basic skill tree, when you leveled you just went and bought a new skill(the same one everybody else in your class had). With the limited character models even used for the npc's you could easily get a group of chars exactly like yours getting a quest from an ai char exactly like yours. As you've said you've already played wow it's unlikely lotro will hold any suprises for you, but only way to know if you'll like it is to try it. |
Originally posted by Karahandras Well, from all this negative feedback of the game, I don't even know if I want to try it. I just don't think it's worth it. The game didn't seem that intriguing to begin with anyway. |

It was a game I looked forward to before its release and I also immediately started playing with some of my friends. If it wasnt based on LOTR I wouldnt have played a full 2 months I think. The things that made me stop playing were : - The art style for mobs and characters. I actually prefer gear that doesnt look over the top and LOTRO also does that. But they managed to chose a boring style for it. It doesnt happen often that I really dont like the character's artstyle in a game. The evil races just dont look intimidating enough in this game. Maybe that the LOTR movies spoiled it for me. Im not a purist if it comes to visualisation of books, so I can easily chose for the movies' artstyle. With orcs, trolls and goblins that actually look ugly and pure evil. - The zones. Beautifully made, but with a very artificial feel to it. Its filled to the brim with quest mobs so there is nothing to explore and only few exits, entrances to from zone. So I immediately recognise the obvious pattern in lvl ranges. That destroys immersion for me. - Wildlife. I know it is not about playing the main heroes, because the books' characters are the main heroes, but having to still kill deer and birds and those weird digging snout beasts at higher lvl is just silly and boring and destroys immersion for me. - Combat is uninspired. I never liked it. I played a lot of tabbased combat in many different MMO's, but this must have been one of the more boring ones. Im not talking about special fx, just that it is slow. There is more stuff that Im not interested in (monsterplay, crafting) in this game, but I never made the mistake to have any expectations for it so it never really bothered me. Most of my negatives are about personal preference I know, so to me its just a game that is not my cup of tea. |

I've said this many times and I'll say it again.. The only person who can tell you if a game is good or not is yourself. What may be crap to someone else may be the best game ever to you personally. Never let someone else pick your games for you. Try them for yourself as it is the only way for you to know if a game is right for you.

Originally posted by h0tangel99 lol, well "not me". I got one character, created at launch to about lvl 36. Not to say there aren't good things about the game but it was never for me. As far as your other additions then "no, the lotro is not for you". You can still download it and try it though. But if you never read the quest text and pvp is important then it doesn't seem like it's right for you. And I also never judge people on what games they like as that feels a bit shallow to me. otherwise I would have to submit to being judged by those that I know who think games are for kids. good luck. |
