I'll say it again.  Just like I did well before this game ever launched.

There has never been a good Star Trek video game.

You guys are forgetting something major here. This is cryptic.  even free to play is gonna be about as far from "free" as any mmo can go. You'll most likely be able to log in, but they'll force you to buy letter from the alphabet just to name your toon.  I wouldn't piss on these guys to put them out if they were on fire.

You can't even own a T5 constitution refit.  This is a Star Trek game and I don't give two credits about the timeline. I bought the life time. I bought the Constitution and it's bridge.  No more money now.  I'm boycotting.

Yeah, you are right. Even Bethesda botched up that concept.

And there were never a good MMORPG made in 18 months either.

They should have doubled the development time ( at least) and made it a lot geekier to get the Trekkies to like it instead of focusing on the casual MMO players. While casual initially might give you more players Trekkies are probably the most faithful fanbois there are out there and screwing them over was a huge misstake.

I just don't get it, what exactly am i to do if i log in to STO?.

Are Craptic telling me they have lots of new missions for maxed out Fed / Klingon toons?.

Surely they are not pinning their hopes on this Foundry with Player! made missions and a few (Weeklys, i think they were called) missions.

Any chance someone can tell me please.

The game was crappy when it was released because it was rushed out by the publisher, Atari.  It improved as best as it could given the limitations imposed by its original pulishers, Atari.

Perfect World knew it's games ported over here weren't as popular as in asia, they needed an "Western" point of view for their games to succede.  Cryptic was/is perfect for them, they make MMOs for other francises.   If STO sucked as everyone here thinks it does, CBS would have had it shut down.  Even without the C-store if they have enough subs to pay the bills they'll keep running.

SWTOR, the holy grail of gaming (based on their own site and this one) only needs 50k subs to be profitable and it cost 30 to 300 milllion to develop.

This li shell of of a Star Trek game that's an insult to the IP will not get me back, even if free. The only credit due for this game is a pat on the back of the art designers, at least they got that right. The rest is a two year rushed half ass of a game that's got a poor foundation to try build and improve anything on. Scrap it and lets try again with a ST MMO, as this isn't it.

If CBS really cared for the IP, they wouldn't even have given Atari / Cryptic the license in the first place!

CBS only cares about money and Atari paid for the license. So CBS got what it wants. $$ Cash!

That reminds me, how stupid are the corporations overseeing these huge intellectual properties?  Star Trek has even more potential to be an amazing IP for an MMO than even Star Wars, and they totally blew it.  A Star Trek MMO should be a cash cow.

Yeah but it wasn't even the original developer, Perpetual Entertainment, it was their original lead designer Glen Dahlgren that had the right Idea. When he left in disgust because the suits at PE wanted him to change the direction of the game(Turn it into 'WoW in Space') they hired someone who would do their bidding. The dumbing down was already in full swing when PE went under and Cryptic took over.

Here is an old interview with Glen Dalgren that shows us a little of the STO he invisioned.

I would have loved to play the STO that Glen proposed but it just wasn't to be. The Suits at PE squashed his vision of STO long before Cryptic ever got ahold of the IP. As for the Cryptic game I may give it another shot now that it's going free to play. I don't see it being much better than the last time I played however. They may have added more content but that still won't hide STO's most glaring flaw... The Cryptic Engine.

Reading that Interview... I have seen it before... And it is hilarious.  I remember last time I read it I thought that developer was nuts.  He is talking about the experience that the player will have, and he keeps referring to the player as 'he', explaining how the player will command his own ship and have other players flying on board doing various tasks.  It sounds really good until you realize taht everyone will want their own ship... Haha...  The sad thing is is the way he says it, as if he has forgotten that other players who will man your ship are people too who are going to be playing the game.  Totally dillusional.

I feel bad for STO because like POTBS it just didnt have the budget to be a big ship game and a human avatar game at the same time.  They should have chosen between the two.  SWTOR learned from this I think, and also learned from SWG that they have to have SOME space in there.

I wouldn't call the "space" in swtor real space, when I think of space I think of exploration, not just a game to play insted of staring at a loading screen.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

or

B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

I could totally play a role in someone else's starship. Think about it more as a guild with the guildmaster being the captain of the ship. It all depends how you excecute those roles and how much you give them stuff to do with their instruments.

What I mean is sure, if all the scanner operator would be doing is press one button to "scan everything at range" all the time, it would be boring, but what if it would be closer to EVE probing, or something else, a minigame of sort?

And if the game would work like that, are you sure everyone would want to be the captain? Given that the captain is not actually the one flying the ship, but instead just giving commands to his crewmembers.

I wish anyone wanting some casual game play to come try STO but do me a favor and dont buy anything from the c-store.  With the way Cryptic has treated its customers, this company does not deserve your money.  Save it for a company you believe in and appreciates you.

If that is what you got from reading that interview you totally missed the point. He was talking about making entire starships that were poplated by players. They would be traveling quest hubs. The major ships players would be assigned to would be NPC controlled and would serve as 'Cities'. Players would still be able to have their own ships but they would be smaller ships assigned to a major quest hub ship's task-force. You really need to work on your reading comprehension.

I only tried beta of this game and i didn't continue. Actually, in that kind of futur/space games the only things i regrets most is they are not able (maybe it is impossible) to built a real "huge" living universe

STO's not that bad a game. I still play it when I get bored with whatever I may be playing at the moment. Hopefully this will bring a little more life to this game, it certainly doesn't deserve to die young.

That actually sounds pretty cool. You're the 'away team leader', not the ship captain. This would fit in perfectly with the Star Trek IP - they wanted to get away from Captains going out anyway. As you work your way up in the hierarchy, you could end up as a Captain (leading the away team through your First Officer) or just be an away team leader.

Something was definitely missing from STO. I think it was just that it was too much like a standard mmo. Pick up a quest from a quest giver and then do it. I think Star Wars method of having a personal story line would have worked better. You're assigned a mission to a world and each world has a pretty comprehensive story line to follow. Oh well. I don't know if I'm going to check this out or not.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Against my better judgement I picked this game up when the price dropped to $30. Even at that price I feel like I was taken advantage of. I played a few, very few hours and was just astounded at how bad the game was. As intrusive as the C store was when P2P I cannot see how F2P will help this mess at all.
