I have picked up Saga of Ryzom, and its a very refreshing game compared to what I have seen earlier (AO and EQ2).

Dark and Light seems very promising. Atriarch as well.

Will french companies in the future become important mmorpg producers?

Yes Saga of Ryzom is a nice game, but it does seem to lack players... and unless it figures out a way in a hurry to lure in some players, it sadly will be destined to go the same path of Horizons.

I will say this, I played both EQ2 and Saga of Ryzom for over 30 hours each.  And SoR blows the disappointing EQ2 away.  Why?  It simply has an element EQ2 lacks... "Fun".  Enough said.  If only it had a good number of players...

Certainly SoR could use more players.

I dont really care if they close the servers, say, in 1 year, I play to have fun now and not in the future. I dont care if the game doesnt have 250k subscribers either. I want enough people on so I can find teams, and fill up my org enough for guild chat to be busy :p

Is Saga of Ryzom a good game? I didn't feel like trying it, but might want to. What is special about? I am going to post this in the Saga of Ryzom forums.

You know UbiSoft? It started as a small game developer over 20 years ago, and is now a multi-national developer/publisher. It's a true French success story.

Not for much longer if EA gets its way :)

To the guy asking what is good about SoR i would say its best feature is its skill system, it is hands down the best in any mmorpg because you can basicly build your own skills.

For example if you want a long range nuke for pulling go for it, or maybe you want a short range nuke with higher damage or what ever you can do it, its the same for malee skills to.

Btw incase anyone says it i am no SoR fanboy i don't even play it anymore :) its skill system is great but the rest of the game is just not for me, my advice would be to try the free trial.

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Unfortunately the French already control most of the marketing/licensing of software via Ubisoft and Infrogames etc.

Remember when Sierra and Microprose were the big American owned/operated distributers?

They were both sold to French companies.

It's a similar difference to when Hollywood churns out formulaic movies year after year, few investors want to take risks so they just release an okay sequel. The more independent companies or those willing to take risks tend to come up with some very good ideas because they don't have an accountant or a lawyer watching over their shoulder.
