OP  12/20/11 10:52:52 AM#1

EVE, where have you been all my life ??

Not sure why I skipped taking a look at this game all these years,  instead dabbling in those fantasy MMO's from EQ to AION and more all flavors inbetween .. but never even tried it, despite being a sci fi and naval combat fan.

Well I just started a trial account earlier last week, and I have already upgraded to a full account.  This game is amazing !

The big thing right now is the sheer wow factor, I have never felt so overwhelmed or like such a complete noob in a game to this degree before, but that just satiated my appetite.

I now understand the draw of the sandbox ... and the amazing feel of a wide open (and amazing world)

It also seems the game is healthy and drawing in new players right now (which is a good thing), it seems there is still opportunity for new players like me to have a place in the game.

I have 10 million questions right now, but lovign every second of my time in new eden, and cant wait to get back in game.

Some basic stuff

1. At what point in your carrer shoud one seek out a corp, whats the best way to find one ?

2.  I have seem some racial threads, I rolled Gallenete based off of story line (and supporting chars to maximize skills) reading some threads about them being useless.. should I reconsider or is that just preference ?

3. I am already seeing where multiple chars have advantages (parallel skill training for example, mining, contracts, combat)  can other races trade from the get go, or does it make sense to make chars of same race ?  also are multiple accounts accepted or frowned upon ?

Thanks !

The only luck I had today was to have you as my opponent.

played for 2 years. excellent game. sadly it didnt fit in with my other MMO and work. :(.

many players with capabilities to plex like to have multiple accounts since its...basically free. so its not frowned upon, no.

Get into Eve University as quickly as possible, they'll help with the basics, I've been a player shortly after they added the very first Battleships, so, been playing for 7 years now.

1. As soon as possible, either find a corp thats doing what you like doing, join a learning corp, or find some friends and make your own corp. (Look out for corps with high tax rates though, that can stunt your development as a pilot, unless they provide you with free ships and skills)

2. Personal preference, you can train any skill in eve if you have the isk for the skillbook and the prerquisites to learn the skill.

3. Again thats personal preference and mulitple characters are an accepted part of eve, some say they are even required.

F2P/P2P excellent thread.

1) I guess that depends on what your 'career' is. It really boils down to your play style and persona.

Hitting some corporations focused on teaching new players - ie. EVE University, are safe bet, imo.

How to find a good corp? Interview and 'data mining' are the best tools imo. Talk to recruit officers, ex-members, observe their forum posting history, track their activities, etc.

Need to say most of it is hard to do with no or little game experience.

2) Gallente suffer of poor game balance.

Gallente use 2 weapon platforms - hybrids and drones. Drone boats are very much fine - great overall versatility although drones some inherited disadvantages. Problem are hybrid guns that just plain suck - hybrid boats are lacking a place and role.

3) To make it clear, unless for role play reasons, racial choice is just cosmetics. You can train any skill and use any ship or weapons you want.

Multiply accounts is a convenience like in any other game - you do not have to rely on other people, you can get access to skills you want 'sooner'.

OP

Join a Guild as soon as possible.

Head to the EVE RAdio chat channel...and listen to EVE Radio, because it is cool.

Read up on the game. The game is huge, complicated, and awesome.

Presently, I am the CEO of a small mining operation.

I have two accounts, one with an ORCA one with a Hulk. Both are mining vessals.

I am presently working on training all six of my characters in Planetary Interaction.

However, I also do exploration, and sometimes do missions.

That is the "care bear" route

There is also the PVP griefter route...which is just as valid.

I also have a pirate, but he has been sitting on ice for a while, since i am working on getting my business up and running.

I will probably get into trading and manufactoring next.

Currently Play: ?
Occasionally Play: Champions, Pirates of the Burning Sea, WOW, EVE ONLINE

Thanks for all the great replies so far,  I have been researching my butt off .. and there is a LOT of info out there.  downloaded the ISK PDF and going through that and will check into EVE university.

my initial interests are mining and military (escort) but I am sure that will develop over time/

I actually had a near brush with a pirate traveling multi-jumps through unknown territory to pick up some items I found cheap .. quite and adreneline rush .. and that was nothing,.. I cant wait :P

There is SO much to this game !

GREAT GAME just dont think your gonna be able to pvp at all since most of the players that do pvp have been playing for 2 or more years solid and will have well over 3-10 million sp points thus they will have way better stats then you can get and you will always be behind them....The game is great for those with paintence to play all there lives but if you want a game with some casual player base eve is not for you.....

wich is sad cause when I played it when it launched there was so much possibility, but after the epic space battle against concord naval police where the gms actually nuked and banned players for griefing and lowering security space on an epic scale I gave up.....some sand box...

This post is a little deceiving. Yes, people who've played longer will always have more SP than you, but that's not a game breaker. If a person with 500 million SP engages you piloting a ship that only required 4 million SP to max the ship out, then all you are fighting against is 4 million SP.

It's a really good idea to pick a ship that you want to master, and train ALL of the necessary skills to max the ship out. A lot of new people rush to jump in a battleship and still get owned by a small frigate...everytime. How? The newb in the battleship has no skills invested in his ship, while the frigate pilot has he Ph.D. in his. Just because you can sit in it doesn't mean you can fly it.

And your post is also decieving....First battleship are needed for level 4 missions, Two the only way a firgate can do those is if its a tech two frigate which fully decked out will take a month or so before a player will be able to do the same as he can do in a week's time.....

Eve has been repeatedly awarded so many awards yet shunned by so many players...I played for years before I bored became bored with it....and every few years I come back only to see nothing has changed much...sure new ways to do something but some rather core things still are not there for the casual gamer....so take it as it is if your a casual gamer that wants a fair chance in game then eve is not for you  if you want to get spanked by 80% of the community before you actually can kill some one one. then eve is perfect for you.....

No, it isn't.

First, L4 are not needed.
Second, EVE can be played very casually, and due real-time based features, you could argue that it can be played more casually than most games out there.

EVE is also the only game where you can "max out" your character without ever leaving the station you started at ;)

From this i am guessing when you played EvE you were one of those who were Griefing the day old newbies in what is basically the newbie starting area which is why the police there are designed to always win at killing your ship. Its well known that surviving against such an attack by police is a bannable offence as its against the rules to exploit the game where it can be. Such as killing newbies in safe space and surviving police retaliation through an exploit of a bug, or spawning free moon minerals through a unknown bug. So fact is you are just angry that you got caught out.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

Actually that had very little to do with it. We were told in a bout 20 forum post from the devs that if we wanted more lo sec space in game we would have to create conflict in lower areas to decrease security levels thus increase the level of ships in the roids for ratting purposes. So yeas we came in with about 200 ships many of which were doing nothing but shield and armor repairs on our bigger ships and we took out the police the navy and 2 gm ships before all were console command killed.

The fact of the matter is we played within the context of the rules set out to us in a sandbox enviroment and were punished for it. We were not exploiting any glitches or flaws. We may have said no to a 10 request of gms to stop such actions. And we may have argued for some 40 pages on the forums post to which the gms contradicted what they originally stated was do able and the true nature of the game to be a sandbox game....

So yes while we may have plunged a great amount of highsec space into low sec space as well pk and pod kill a bunch of players as well as gms doing full well what was allowed in the sandbox system only to be punished by a need to keep people from changing games....The sad part is this action is still done today but not in the grand scale that we once did it. Hell now a days killing new players is about as common in eve as buying a plex. Why is it that if what we did some 6 years ago is so wrong that they actually banned many people, myself not included in that, that they allow it to happen now a days yet make no effort to create any sort of balance or way for newer players to even compete against other players. The fact that the game is so inbalanced to any player who has not been in the game for 2-4 years, still exist with no hope of ever changing.

To OP, I joined Eve 3 Months ago, and I also love the game for the complexity it offers. My path so far has been to get my skills up to a level where I can deal with level 4 missions easily in my amarr Bs. Went amarr because I love the look of laziest battles. Now that I have a good income stream I am doing exactly as suggested above, I am now levelling an alt to max out skills in 1 particular type of ship. This is going to take months, and it is great to see him evolve. Also setup skills for PI and manufacturing and hauling on the side to mix it up. A wee tip- if you are missioning get a no Tia for salvaging ASAP, takes away a lot of the tedium.

rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW (1000 hrs on main mage)> oblivion > LOTR (480 Hunter) > Rift (230 hours mage) > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(900 elementalist), Wildstar
