I had launcher issues that support couldn't help me with so I never tried it again.

Wow, free players don't get the same stuff as subscribers ? wtf ? How can Gamersfirst sink so low...

FE probably has one of the BEST F2P pricing models. A free player has access to ALL game content that a subscriber has access to. The only "serious drawback" for free players is that crafting, scavenging, XP gain, etc. is 25% slower than the cheapest sub option. Free players also have an 8-hour cap on OFFLINE crafting, but no penalty for online crafting, other than speed.

Levelling is generally fast anyway, and any player can get a free 1-hour 10% XP-rate buff from visiting a Bunker Bar in any town.

Any other F2P games offering that level of access ?

Sorry if this list is more limited than what you were looking for, I can't think of any more Western F2P games. I'm sure you could throw the rest of them in this lot as well.

Really, ALL those games let F2P players access all zones currently ingame, and all quests ? And allow full access to PVP ? All of them allow you full-access to ALL content all the way to level-cap without costing a dime ? Including no initial game purchase required ?

You may want to at least remove LoTRO from that list, because I know it doesn't qualify. You have to buy quest packs and expansion access in LoTRO, last time I checked.

But again, what good is all that content access if you don't have the ability to take it on?  Last time I played, quest gear and random drops weren't near enough to ensure viability as you leveled, and you absolutely had to obtain crafted gear.  Be that through trade (prohibitive with a currency cap), or actually making it yourself.  I seriously doubt they changed it, as it would impact their money making scheme.

At least with LOTRO, they had the good grace to make crafted armor practically useless, so it isn't an issue at all.

I have no answer to that argument, mainly because it implies that game companies should not expect to actually MAKE MONEY from their games :D

Gamers successfully resisted ANY increase to the "Golden Sub Rate" of $15 per month for about the last 7 years, if not longer. How many products can you name that still cost exactly the same as they did 7 years ago ? Especially entertainment-related items or services that require significant human effort to produce ?

The gaming INDUSTRY is a business. Any business that is prepared to see it's annual revenue shrink every year is failing. I sincerely doubt that developers would accept a reduction in salary every year, so something had to give... Then game developers found a clever trick to increase their revenue, they invented F2P :D

Not sure, do prostitutes count as a product?  That is the least inflation affected industry I can think of.

The term "gaming industry" as a legitimate business endeavor only really applies to the single player games market anymore.  This F2P craze that has taken over the MMO market is an industry in the same way that illicit, black market drug development is an industry.  Nobody actually develops new drugs anymore, all you have are the old standards like cocaine, heroin, and friends that are constantly being cut with other things and repackaged as new products.

As far as game developers turning to f2p as a response to the monthly sub model, I don't buy it.  Evidence has shown that it is more akin to a tactic that a company falls back on when they don't have the talent to make a game work, and they reach the point in life where they weigh the difference between the artistic integrity that got them into game development, and the need for revenue influx.  The latter almost always wins out, and said MMO turns into a static ghost of itself with zero meaningful content updates, whilst said developer uses the newfound revenue to fill that hole in their collective heart that was formed when they sacrificed their dreams.  Then new startup guy comes along, observes what is going on, is dumbstruck by the huge neon $$$ signs, and decides to emulate this other guy's economic success with total disregard for the lesson passed on by his spiritual failure.  Probably because said f2p startup never had any integrity to begin with, so the lesson never applied to them.

This should change your mind.

Wow, they actually limited the crafting time per day for free players?  I've heard bad things about Gamersfirst, but that is just...

DDO does not offer this.

You have to buy seals to gain access past lvl6, there are some free dungeons past 6, yes, but you run out of content in like 10 seconds if you don't pay. You can grind for the seals ofc but the drop-chance is so low (6%), you would have to run a dungeon at least 15 times to get a bronze one (lowest entry level seal lvl 6).

If you approximate 1 hour per dungeon, thats around 15 hours of grind time to just level your character past lvl 6.

DDO does not offer you the complete gaming experience in F2P. It just pretends.

Its still a good system though but nothing like -25% crafting speed.

Afaik LoTRO also kind of breaks past lvl 20 for F2P with limited access to content, since its also Turbine.

PS: LoL/HoN is not an MMO, its a moba game, where PayToWin should not even be considered as a valid business strategy.

The only items that might become a problem (possible but very slow) to craft as f2p are vehicles. Gear is no problem to craft for yourself as f2p. The money cap (which is 10 red btw, which is pretty high) gets removed after you purchase something from their store.

I dont like the current implementation of FE for other reasons (economy and combat revamp), but FE has one of the better f2p offers on the market atm. All content is available to a f2p player and there is no reason why you cant compete on the same lvl as p2p.

Actually compared to other MMOs that offer a hybrid payment model, its the p2p accounts in FE that dont offer much extras besides slightly faster progress (lvl, crafting, faction) and extra characterslots.

Btw, faction gear is also an option besides crafted gear the moment you hit Sector 2.

This game is definitley worth a look at, especially since they released the territory wars just recently, which gives end game players a lot to work on/do. The game can be quite a challenge, between crafting ammo for your guns/getting gear. And while some of the quests offer item rewards, you will most likely have to buy your armor/weapons from the AH, unless you go down the route of crafting. The quests aren't difficult at all if you have decent armor/weapons, however it does feel like quite a grind to 55.

Go try it for yourself, especially if you like post apocalyptic settings. This one absolutely nails the setting.
