Originally posted by mrxennon Good designers. People make the difference. The problem with MMORPGs now a days is that game companies wanting to cash in like Blizzard did keep hiring and trading around the same pieces of crap who have sucked every bland drop of blood from the turnip of the last decade. That's the issue. That's why SWTOR is going to basically get by on story telling alone. These guys aren't bringing us anything new. Even the ones who try open world sand box-ish dynamic games tend to be the same ones who programmed against it. So it turns out rather poorly. Craftsmanship counts. Sometimes it matters more than innovation itself. I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee. |

Originally posted by PukeBucket I'm not disagreeing with anyone on how good Skyrim is. I havnt put it down since I bought it. As a single player game its brilliant. I Just dont think there is enough to make it an MMO, You would need to change so much, people would not be happy with everything being instanced, guildwars although not an MMO was instanced and people hated it. SWtoR now your trying to make me laugh, just cannot take that game seriously, its a joke, all they got is money spent on voices and think that its enough for it to be succesful. They can't even get rid of all the Beta keys its that bad.

one of the reasons they can't get rid of all the beta keys is that everyone in their database got invited to the beta already and was told not to apply an additional key... virtually everyone interested in being in the beta was already going to be in that "end of month' beta, so the keys were just to try to pull more people in... and they gave like 75k to every major website. |

Originally posted by mrxennon It'd not have to be instanced as much as you'd think. Really the mechanics would be needed more than the graphics. A lot of people want a real open world game now. But with the quality on par with their non-MMO peers. I mean UO and Shadowbane are still out there, but they've aged and have their own problems. That spirit in a new game that's developed with some care (I've taken people at their word about Mortal Online). What I like most is Skyrim proves Fantasy is still a top RPG genre. I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee. |

Some of them are cool... though I haven't bought a strategy guide since, like, Pokemon Red, and it came with tons of cool things inside. A Skyrim one might be kinda cool to have if it's loaded with enough information. I would definitely not read it until I'm done with a game like Skyrim though. It could contain spoilers. |

I find the most engaging thing about Skyrim is that I'm extremely cautious. I'm cautious because I don't know what lies ahead and what's ahead could quite possibly crush my skull. I'm constantly creeping through dungeons, so that I can *hopefully* see what's ahead before it sees me first and creams me, lol. Having had dragons swoop down from the skys while I'm on my way to a quest objective has put me in the habit of nervously checking the skys so that I'm not caught unaware. Hell, while I'm traveling, I've often looked around at my surroundings for places I can take cover behind if a dragon does swoop down and try to eat me! In MMORPG's, I don't worry about a thing, because mobs are packed tight in every zone with levels above their head. I know from a cursory glance whether or not I can beat them. Mobs in MMORPG's since WoW came out are no challenge at all if they are even a few levels higher than me. I know in a MMORPG that if I do draw agro, I can set my character on autoattack, go to the bathroom, and feel confident that when I return the mob will be dead and me back to full health. The icing on the cake is that I can choose whichever skills I want in Skyrim. I'm not pigeon-holed in a highly restrictive class in the name of *class balance*, plus my actions change the world around me along with my relationships with towns and their inhabitants. |

Originally posted by PukeBucket Personally I think GW2 will offer everything people are crying out for plus more. They have used pax, gamescon, comic-con etc as a base to get criticism and reacted on it, thats my opinion on this years Anet's attendance. We will see the living breathing world and the npc reaction to what we do or dont do in that game. Voices are a nice addition to an mmo, but I dont think its enough to hold people's attention and will wear thin after a few weeks, if not a few days. I also believe the MMO market may slow down now, we have been hammered with titles the past 5 yrs or so although most of them have been under par in the quality department, the recent announcemants of games going f2p the past 12 months has shown that the market has become to saturated and cant make these game break even on a subscription only market. Many more will follow suit, can SwtoR retain enough players to stay as a subscription game, will have to wait and see on that one, TSW also going on the subscription based model, with a cash shop aswel, that lost my interest right there. Typed more up than I intended.

Not MMO ,private servers.
The system like Minecraft has right now ,where one person sets up a server and then you play the game with less than 20 people that you know and trust ;) Thats what TES needs. I play Aion... And I like it. |

Skyrim: miles of content, quests and very good graphics, much higher immersion MMO: often grind, RMT, drama no one wants, raids many don't want, need friends to play, etc etc etc Skyrim winner! |

If Skyrim were an MMO, it would have been received very differently. For starters, for 5 years in development Skyrim was released with a lot of bugs. In more occasions than I'm comfortable with I've had to reload previous saves and use command lines to get past bugged quest stages. It's not as bad because I can quickly fix it myself, but it would be a deal breaker in MMOs. Imagine having to wait around for CSRs to fix your quest or character everytime you come across a glitch or bug as often as it happens in Skyrim. Unacceptable. Secondly, character progession is a joke. There are many "tricks" that can be used to max out things like Smithing, Alchemy and Sneaking rather quickly. People maxing out skills in the first day of launch would create a lot of bad press for an MMO, not so much in a single player RPG, there it just means we can get the good stuff sooner. Which brings me to my next point, the game is very easy and forgiving, which is not helped by the fact that it's very easy to max out crafting and make some of the best gear early on, turning the most difficult quests into pushovers even on master difficulty. Picture an MMO where everyone has the best gear a week into the game and is able to solo the most difficult bosses. Sounds great, huh? Class balance is out of wack in Skyrim. Some trees have a lot of potential and turn into powerhouses, while others not so much, but it doesn't matter because the PvE is a push-over to begin with and you don't see NPCs complaining. If Skyrim were an MMO, every min-maxer would have top of the line bows and/or daggers with with a side of CC, 200% bonus dmg from enchantments and 3x or 15x dmg multiplier from sneak, while mages are left snowballing people to death as they can't improve their damage much past their perks. A balance oversight like that would completely destroy the PvP aspect of an MMO. I would pay to see the outcry in the forums of a game like that. Skyrim feels more alive than the average MMO because it can get away with it being a single player RPG. Imagine an MMORPG where players can openly kill the NPCs you need for quests and whatnot. Griefers and trolls would throw a fucking party. In summary, single player RPGs like TES are so successful because they only have to deal with one player. |

Originally posted by Krytycal What you said here makes alot of sense. I was thinking about going out and buying Skyrim. Probably still will, but hoping its not that buggy of a game. Probably be hard for them to make this a mmorpg unless they cleaned up alot of the balance issues and bugs. ========================== |

Why we want that Skyrim becomes a mmo i wonder? First we wanne have fun playing game right? Do we have fun playing Skyrim? I have so no need for mmo version right? Also we all have so much fun with Skyrim as SOLO game that its one of the most discussed games in past year on MMORPG.COM sinds it launched. 1. So we have fun playing it while its a solo game 2. We all discuss this game a lot on MMORPG.COM becouse we also like to talk about our favorite SOLO game Skyrim on this mmo site:) So i dont realy see any reason why Skyrim should be a MMO while we already have ALOT OF FUN with this game and talk about it on a MMORPG site :D Lets hope more developers pick this up and make us some fine new SOLO games like Elder Scrolls and then discus it here on MMORPG.COM even the STAFF here ADORE Skyrim misson accomplished Bethesda:)
I quit Guildwars 2 for now im fed up with empty world:(... played:AC-Darktide,AC2-Darktide,L2 and Darkfall.Solo Fav games:Morrowind,DayZ(PLAYING NOW), Skyrim, Bioshock, Age of Empires 2, Soldiers of fortune 2 and many more... |

The answers are rather simple: Skyrim is very MMO-like and it's new.
Skyrim is appealing to many of the same people who find MMOs appealing. It features one of the most expansive, immersive, "living, breathing" (to use two words that have very commonly been deployed to describe Skyrim) virtual worlds ever created. Many people were initially drawn to RPGs for these reasons. Then MMOs came along and they seemed to provide this immersion sensation to a greater extent than any single player RPG ever did. It seems many single player RPGs are now reclaiming the throne, surpassing MMOs in their ability to create that "living, breathing virtual world."
Oh, and Skyrim is new. It's only natural for the new big thing to be talked about like crazy. It's the same reason SW:TOR threads are popping up everywhere now that beta is in full effect and the NDA has been lifted. Expect the same thing when GW2 goes into beta. |
