I thought Eve was going to be a freelancer type game and it was just crappy combat with an amazing econ simulation. Not the most fun imo. Then there is a swing and miss space shooter/mmo called Black Prophesy. The design is flawed imo. They should have sacrificed graphics for game play. And the balance issues are pretty wacky. Plus it doesn't feel like an mmo the way you warp around. Jumpgate Evolution was looking at least close to a good space shooter mmo but then we have not heard anything from netdevil in over a year so looks pretty bad. I really don't understand why we still do not have a freelancer mmo yet. There should be ten thousand space shooter mmo's like we have 20,000 fantasy mmo's. Or a better land and space mmo like SWG. I'm just sad that there really is not a decent 3d space shooter mmo yet. Just because SWG had horrible combat on the ground and no really good content for space does not mean that there is no way to do it well. Just use the cryengine like Entropia Universe has. Mindark did what SOE should have done and got a better game engine and it is refreshing to see a game company make a good choice like that. Now lets get more companies to copy them please :) and use the cryengine to make a decent space shooter that I can sink my teeth into. I love spaceships! |

I ask the same question to myself all the time. I want an MMO similar to Eve but with the combat and movement styles that freelancer had. It was just more fun. But I dont know how that would work with larger ships. |

Eve's combat is more dynamic and fluid than most games either released or in development. The problem is getting to that level of play takes alot of time and investment as well as alot of in-game loss. |

Dynamic and fluid are not the words I wold have used.
I would say Eve combat is frustrating and boring and not at all engaging. I have fallen asleep more times then I care to remember in Eve's dynamic and fluid pve game play and in pvp I sit and wait for hours while our enemies stay docked or get hot dropped while trying to make sense of combat using a LIST where I click frantically trying to listen to my FC's instructions. Makes me dream of a good space mmo shooter that I can really enjoy instead of dealing with Eve's non action based abstract game mechanics. |

EvE Online is more like X in terms of gameplay. It's way more strategical and not that action-oriented. Black Prophecy was top of my list for a long time, but then they decided to go F2P and development was done rather poorly from there on, resulting in a very boring something. Jumpgate was the only space-combat-oriented MMO so far that was somewhat good, and once they announced Evolution hopes were high, but as you know it they stopped development for whatever reasons. Another title that sounded very good is Infinity, but as it's basically a single person developing the game, we can wait another five years for some progression. I still follow the progress of it tho, becasue the technique used is very interesting. StarTrek had good ideas actually, and it offered both, space and ground-cambat, but it lacked content and was missing Freelancer-style action aswell. SWG and SWTOR don't really offer space-combat and focus more on groundcombat, so they're not really fitting into the question. I'd like to see a MMO based on Freelancer for the combat with the economical part of X added to the mix and maybe some of what StarTrek had to offer for ground-combat and running around with avatars. This would be awesome, but I guess this won't ever happen. All in all there's no good space-combat-game since Freelancer, not even normal ones. And when I think about it, I actually don't know of any space-combat-simulators other then Darkstar One during the last 5 years. |

You don't like EvE? You are out of luck. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it has bad combat. There will probably never be a game that has the scope of EvE and combat like Freelancer. EvE's combat allows the game and players to use big ships, twitch combat not so much. |

dont get me wrong, if you like simulations, eve is a really good game, but if you prefer real combat... well what the op said :) "I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!" |

I agree, the original Jumpgate still has the best combat/flight-engine and mmo open world design, but it is very dated in garphics and the econ is rather dated and so is the pve style. Jumpgate Evolution would have been a wellcome experience even if it did stray from the original flight-engine and awesome gear/power managment system.
I recomend everyone try Jumpgate once to see the good parts of that game. |
