Between pandarin (sp?) and every other fantasy race that you already play. Please someone explain this to me. In the countless qqing post over the past several days, people have insisted that panda's are a race catering to children, but then after saying that, going to play a elf is any different? Elves, dwarves, gnomes, asura, orcs....you all realize that all these races, and fantasy in general, is viewed as a very childish thing outside of the video game world? Then throw in the fact that the average wow player is around 25-28 years old, and it becomes ridiculous for people to say that this pandarin race was made for children. For 1, it's been the most requested race for years, so even if, in your fantasy world, every adult that played wow quit in wotlk and was simultaneously rreplaced by millions of children, this was a race that was probably by in large requested by adults. 2) why would adults have a problem with a panda race? I don't get this one the most out of all of it. Because of kung fu panda? How many adults without children have even watched this before? Pandas are a cool animal, they look good, and they are a very unique race in the mmo world, what is so childish about them? How is a panda any different from this or this or this is what I'm saying. tl;dr : None of you would have a problem if this panda race was included in guild wars 2(or any other game for that matter). The only reason for the hate is blizzard, not pandarin. Since you hate blizzard so much, do what I did...play a different game. Now, I know a lot of you already play different games, but the way some people post would certainly make you think differently.

While I personally couldn't care less I believe this is the difference:
A bit silly a reason really, but MMORPG.com wouldn't be the same without the 200-reply threads about pandas, WoW-clones and the good old times when everything was better. We are the bunny. |

I don't agree with the choices D:.
But yeah.. hating blizzard because of Pandas is pretty stupid. In fact, don't hate blizzard at all. Hate the companies that follow WoW's impementation of pick-up-n-play mechanics. |

I voted Wordst.....since this rant was pretty bad, and crying about GW2 fans, like all the complaining is only coming from them...I think its silly, and don't care about pandas....But still had to vote that way, based on presentation/rant.
Like I said before, 95-99% of the people that play WoW, will still be playing WoW after pandagate, no matter how much they say they are quitting due to pandas imo...I don't play wow, but I can't see pandas actually getting many to leave...Now if the expansion itself sucks...thats different.

Nothing. The only thing i'd say is if wolves and bears crop up as beast-races / were-creatures in western fantasy genre and pandas and foxes in east asian fantasy or monkeys in south asian etc then it's cooler if those beast-races are in settings that fit as part of a theme i.e. an east asian themed continent with panda and/or fox shape-shifter races, a medieval europe themed continent with werewolves/bears and a wolf or bear beast race, a south asian themed continent with monkey demons etc. |

Originally posted by tupodawg999 Well,I think theres more asian players than western players, so who knows. But I can see this at least as logical complaint( if someone said it doesn't fit into wow, although they are putting a theme to the continent), as opposed to the "Pandas are for kids" complaints that have been flying around. |

Yes, the hate is getting old. Not to bash anyone on this site, but I can't take the comments or forums section seriously anymore. There is an undeserved hate towards anything WoW. I know a lot say it stifled the growth of MMO's, but blame it on other dev's that have tried to copy WoW again and again, not the source. And for the Pandarin hate: it's been in Warcraft lore before WoW, which has been said again and again but some people still don't get it. I for one am excited for the expansion. Not for the race itself, but for the actual focus outside of raiding and dungeons. |

I have no problem with hating on Blizzard for their Real ID scheme, their playerbase, and many of their pvp decisions. But pandas? Hate over pandas? Really? And even if you loathe the idea of pandas in your mmo to the point where you want the entire species extinct, how many of you people griping about it are even playing WoW right now? |

Take time to deliberate; but when the time for action arrives, stop thinking and go in. |

I was over the WoW hate in 09. That being said I never hated it, and always felt people blaming it for ruining the genre and keeping soapbox games down just targeted it because it was THE mmo. The best discussions on this board stem from new MMO ideas and discussions about systems and mechanics of MMOs, the fan boy debates and bandwagon stuff really takes away from what is other wise a very intelligent community. But really, you have this in all communitys. I still love this place and every fan boy in it! Well, most of the fan boys in it.......

Originally posted by jadedlevir It's not really a complaint. I quite like the idea of playing a panda personally. It was more an idle thought that crossed my mind. If a game has a temperate continent designers generally try and make all the zones have a distinctive flavour. Often if a game adds a new continent it will be all icy or desert themed or something - again for flavour. I was just thinking if a game had multiple temperate continents then it would make sense for those continents to have a distinctive continent level theme also i.e one could have a western fantasy theme, mobs and architecture, one an east asian theme, mobs architecture, one a south asian or middle eastern theme etc. Part of that theme could be the playable beast-races. |

But Ya i like that idea, and i always thought it was weird that game worlds don't already do that... instead of having distinct themes based on regions and locations, it's just a random placement of zones without much logic to it besides for diversity.

I'm still laughing over the term - Pandagate. Its funny. I am shocked that any fantasy mmorpg are putting panda people in a mmorpg. Right along side elves and dwarves. OMG!! I can see the comics now. The panda is a troll. ;/ ========================== |

Of course its getting old. How do we know?: 1. The hate is irrational. As you said, if another game did it, there would not be an uproar. The fact WOW did it automatically makes it bad or stupid. 2. The hate is incorrect. This on many points. Its not something Blizzard did to captalize on Kung-fu panda. Pandarens have been planed since Burning Crusade and are the #1 requested/wanted thing to be added according to surveys. Its not something Blizzard did to capitalize on the Asian market. If China holds to policy, Blizzard may have a tough time getting this past censors. 3. The hate is full of the classic signs.....insults, lies and assumptions. WOW is a kiddie game, its playerbase is 10 years olds (even thought data proves different). Etc.....etc..... Most of all its made up of people who hate WOW solely because vanilla no longer exists and deep down they truly want to play but are so focused on their hate and anger that a casual player can achieve what they can as hardcore players, rips at their soul. So instead of playing, they convince themselves, through the slow degradation of others, that they are morally superior and they do not want to play WOW and anyone who does its a childish idiot. |

A cliche is an expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel
If adding a Kung Fu Panda Monk would have been done as a joke it would have been funny, because it has become a cliche in modern society. Talking fat pandas make for great comedic material, hence its use in the movie.
Adding such a cliche as an element to a game in an important role such as a playable race opens up Blizzard for ridicule because of the stereotype of the kung fu panda as a comedic element. The way I see it this leaves potential players in an uncertain state of whether this is an incredibly cool idea, or just some sort of absurd gimmick.
This isn't the first time to see comedic elements in play from Blizzard. Remember the Mohawk Hand Grenade? Too some it was fun, to others barely humorous or even outright annoying. However, it was a huge hit as a promotion and they made millions from the publicity stunt. I see the Panda expansion in a similar light. They certainly managed to get people talking.
Whether the move is appropriate or absurd is based on perspective. |

Originally posted by blackcat35 Yeah they should've used respectable fantasy species like fairies, centaurs (horse people), lizard people, dragon people, cat people, and frog people. ...but Bear people?!? Entirely unbelievable! Completely out of place! Totally unacceptable! (In seriousness, it's honestly shocking how much controversy this seems to have caused. The game has bull people and wolf people already. Bandwagon hate is the clear explanation, but still...) |
