Its a game about choice.  I can imagine it getting old when you roll so many characters.  May be different at launch when you feel more of an attachment to your characters on account of them not being wiped and all.

No, it's a game of false choices, like DA2.  The light/dark functions only as a gate to gear.  Going full dark on Republic doesn't scare people or make your reputation as a monster appear anywhere.  Hell, they laud you as a hero regardless of alignment.  Bioware is great at thinking your choices matter, but ultimately, it doesn't change the game one bit -- especialyl since it's a themepark MMO where everything has to remain static.

I'll take the illusion of choice over a boring meaningless grind any day of the week.  Whether you agree with Bioware's design philosophy or not, you cannot deny that it helps you feel more invested in your character than any of those regular  RPG / MMORPG paradigms.

Except that the bad reviews aren't based on the quality of the game, but rather what the reviewer is looking for in a game.  In essence, they're calling it a bad game, rather than calling it a good game that doesn't cater to their playstyle.

If a casual game does it's job and caters to casual players, then who is some hardcore reviewer to say that the game is bad when it serves it's intended purpose?  Perhaps said reviewer should be reviewing their types of games instead?

i honestly think this game will serve its community well im not part of that community, i overall think it will be a good to great game not a masterpiece but will give the ones looking at it what it wants. good for them. i havent seen a game come out that was a masterpiece yet usually it builds itself up that way maybe this one will too, to one demographic. one of these days a company will make a company for myself and the demographic im a part of

$500 Backer to 2015's Top New MMO... The Repopulation!

10/21/11 1:13:40 PM#145

What SWTOR is not...

1) SWG 2.0

2) Elves Slashing and Dwarves Hacking

3) Boring to Creative Minds

What SWTOR is...

1) MMO with a purpose

2) MMO with a balance in gameplay ( PVP, PVE, Crafting, Exploration )

3) Story Driven ( So powergamers are sure to complain )

1) SWG 2.0 - Did anyone really want that?

2) Elves Slashing and Dwarves - The Star Wars part kind of made that clear.

3) Boring to Creative Minds - Thats debatable. A bunch of sticks could be interesting to a creative mind because something could be created from that. How is a themepark MMO possibly engaging for a creative mind? There is really nothing to create. It is all laid out for you. What to do, where to go your options are limited by the way the game was designed. You are just a player not at all a creator. Now if you are talking about RPing well that is another thing entirely.

What SWTOR is...

1) MMO with a purpose - same purpose as all of the others. Level to end game and then raid or pvp. Chase the carrot until you just cant take it any more.

2) MMO with a balance in gameplay ( PVP, PVE, Crafting, Exploration ) - that is also debatable. I have seen nothing that says crafting is very usefull at end game and once you have explored everything there is nothing new until a patch or most likely an expansion.

3) Story Driven ( So powergamers are sure to complain ) - can't argue with that. There is story and people are sure to complain when they hit end game. What does happen at end game when the story ends?

If you hate metal music, does that mean all artists of the genre are bad musicians? If you dislike cherry pie does that mean all bakers who bake a cherry pie are bad at what they do? There's a huge difference between being bad at something, and creating stuff for a certain audience or taste.

Sounds really good. I've always liked trooper myself, but I might have to go with Imperial Agent.  I've always liked being the evil guys in Star Wars.

SWTOR is everything that's wrong with MMORPGs.

  • Developer-written and driven story that, while offering different paths, eventually results in boredom and repetition.

  • Themepark gameplay design with quest hubs and linear, level-based progression through the world.

  • Complete lack of social features aside from forming groups/parties such as mini games, cantinas, etc.

  • Instanced PvP that has little to no affect on the world or battle between Light and Dark.

  • The same, old-fashioned combat system that results in boring and awkward-looking situations (see Trooper standing in the open exchanging laser bolts with an enemy).

  • Phoned-in crafting system and lack of a player-driven economy.

It's a paint-by-numbers MMORPG. And, while I do applaud BW for their attention to detail in the plot, voice over dialogue, and authenticity to Star Wars (unlike Cryptic with Star Trek), this just isn't the way I'd like to see MMORPGs in 2011.

If there was ever a genre that needed innovation, it's the MMORPG. It's like we're being given the same product over and over, with hardly any updates, changes, or improvements. It's almost gotten to be as bad as the Madden games.

  • Developer-written and driven story that, while offering different paths, eventually results in boredom and repetition.  There is a different story for every class, and different paths you can choose within each story if you were to go through it a second time.  The words "boredom" and "repetitious" are the last words I'd use to describe it, unless you just don't like sitting through dialogue.

  • Themepark gameplay design with quest hubs and linear, level-based progression through the world.  Granted, but there is still a large audience for this type of gameplay in MMOs.  It may not be everybody's cup of tea, but you can't just say "This is what's wrong with MMOs," particularly when many people enjoy that casual style of gameplay.  I personally find that player-created content is usually the worst kind, since I trust developers to create exciting content more than Joe Schmoe sitting at his keyboard.  Still, I think we all would like it if things were a bit more non-linear.

  • Complete lack of social features aside from forming groups/parties such as mini games, cantinas, etc. If you want to socialize, go socialize.  It is always funny to me when people feel that a game needs to "force" you to socialize in order to meet people.  You want a game conducive to social interaction?  Make sure there are a lot of people playing.  SWTOR will have that.

  • Instanced PvP that has little to no affect on the world or battle between Light and Dark.  They also will have open world PvP on the planet of Ilum as well.

  • The same, old-fashioned combat system that results in boring and awkward-looking situations (see Trooper standing in the open exchanging laser bolts with an enemy).  Yes, it's your standard tab-target combat.  But they have added the cover mechanic to a couple of classes, which isn't standard.  Still, the abilities and combat animations seem solid, so that will appeal to many people.  Again, just because it isn't your cup of tea doesn't mean it's contributing to the fall of Western civilization.

  • Phoned-in crafting system and lack of a player-driven economy.  Wrong about the crafting.  It's not "phoned in."  They didn't make a mini-game out of it like SWG or Vanguard, but they did add some things to it that make it a little more involved than your standard WoW-type crafting system.  There are different grades/qualities of items you can craft, and there are procs.  You can also use reverse engineering for a chance at rare recipes/schematics.  The best crafted gear will be a slight notch below the best raiding gear, and certain items will only be able to be crafted by certain players on the server due to the rareness of specific recipes.  So it is possible in this game to "stand out" on your server for your crafting, rather than making the same stuff everyone else makes.  It may not be as involved as an SWG...but it certainly doesn't sound like a standard crafting system to me.  It's definitely a step above most themepark crafting systems.

Perhaps it doesn't turn "Massively" until level 50; it might be a Heroic quest for the final, yet first M in MMORPG.  Until then it just might be a mixture of single-player and cooperative-player ORPG with multiple people on the same server.

Which is my point. Maybe at level 50 it will turn into an MMORPG but for now the game sounds more like an MORPG.

Dear MMORPG:

Can someone on your staff who likes PvP please do a preview of this game?  I'd like to know more about the open-world PvP experience in Beta, especially since the developers have said so little about it.   Some commentary on the battlegrounds is okay, but we've already had press previews of the battlezone with the turrets, so a focus on open world PvP would be appreciated.

Please don't send someone from your staff who doesn't like to do PvP to do that part of the preview.   Thanks.

P.S.  The current preview above was fine, just want some info on the PvP side.

Open world PvP wasn't available within the level range we are able to provide coverage of at this time. Sorry :(

That's cool.    Thanks for the quick reply.   I just hope you can pass that message along so that we can get a sense of that aspect of the game when you can discuss it.  It's really the big missing info so far, which if you like to PvP is a big concern.
