The Full Beta Preview has to be slanted toward positive; this site has to suspend disbelief to a degree since they rely on advertising, and they wouldn't want to upset that.  And though it would be very unsettling for them to remotely challenge Biowares, who has gained respect through their excellent single-player rpg's, of which SW:TOR seems to be a very good cooperative multiplayer derivative of, it’s just easier for this site to play somewhat disconnected from the concept of ‘massively-multiplayer’ and follow its’ homogenization.

But admittedly, this “Preview” is anything but a “Full Beta Preview”, when James Ohlen already stated that the current beta testers are playing the full game, levels 1-50.  This preview has got to be mostly void of most early and completely void of mid to end-game content, which calls into question the inference of a “Full Beta Preview”.

So no, the disappointment from others doesn’t seem to be ‘just’ about PvP, but the authors slanted title of “Full” which falsely implies that it is actually a Full Beta Preview of a game going live in just under 2-months, when it is glaringly obvious it is Not as Full within the context of  a ‘masively-multiplayer’ game when it comes to game-play, content, worlds & environment, faction purpose, game-play mechanics, skill-trees, community motivation, social & guild tools, pve and pvp, etc..  So from this piece, there are more holes that need to be filled with a lack of information on, such as:
  • any social, server firsts or guild features, progression system, aside from coop grouping.
  • anything related to racial abilities, specs, skill trees, dual spec/roles.
  • playable races.
  • any game-play freedom and diversity of exploration other than following a staged and linear path from one quest-hub to the next.
  • full pve experience, assuming there is more breadth and depth to the pve experience. . .such as. . .
  • any pve open-world massively-multiplayer dynamic events that have any influence on world conflict between light & dark factions; absolutely no “massively-multiplayer” pve game-play distinction or game-play nutrition in this yet.
  • world size and openness vs linear & funneled.
  • dynamic mob/creature/npc inhabitant movement, migration, motivation, or dynamic world colonization or community influence over the environment, regardless of whether it is influenced construction or not.
  • day/night cycles and environmental weather or effects.
  • full pvp or even world  pvp experience that transcends anything but a small team vs another small team within the same redundant tiny shoebox minimap of hot-potato.  The revealed player-vs-player stuff seems without any game-play factional contributory value or substance other than winning a small confining map that amounts to run, gun, die, or run, gun, win, limp, die; a lot of third-person shooter distinction, but no mmoprg game-play distinction or game-play nutrition in this yet.
  • any crafting complexity, involvement, or entertaining stimuli with player involvement as opposed to it’s appearance of one-button cruise control that you send your companion out to ‘fetch’ and come back with.
  • customization overall that are visually & aesthetically distinctive or unique by any means; character customization, clothing, armor, weapons, vehicles, dye capability, etc.
So since most of these mmorpg staples don’t interest some, the reported experience seems to play reportedly more like a cooperative multiplayer or single-player rpg.  It could be that Content is sorely lacking.

I will enjoy the journey, Im sure.  But as with many other games that ask for $15/month for playing the same content with little breadth or depth in the ‘massively-multiplayer’ department, that subscription commitment is going to lose out for lack of value after a short while.

Pretty much most of the info you asked for has already been reported on. Lack of content doesn't seem to be a concern, as there are many ways (not just the 200hrs each of the class quests) to level. While some worlds are mostly for the linear storytelling, many are supposed to be huge with exploring as another way to level/gear up. You might want to do some research before assuming the things you asked about are absent. No review could be so comprehesnive to include all the info about the game, and the NDA is only dropped for the first 15 lvls, so he was giving his take on what has had time to experience. (I thought he said he had more info coming as he got further into it, not sure). So maybe "Full" Review wasn't the right wording for the title, but there is plenty of info out if you look for it.

Not 1 bit because after 3-6 months the game will start bleeding subs like WAR and AOC. I believe those were popular ips too, especially Warhammer. I love the Star Wars ip as well as Bioware but unfortunately its gonna tank hard after a couple of months. In the history of mmos there has never been a premade ip that has captured the hearts of gamers. Everything that has done well was an original ip.

Wasn't the IP that killed WAR and AOC it was the execution. SWtoR is the best execution of it's type yet. It's the game LotRO should have been.

I think there are a few SWG fans that disagree with you on that statement !

I am worried about replayability. Some games, like Vanguard for example, have multiple places to level for each level range. If you are level 15, for example, there are several whole continents and zones for that level. You literally could not see all the content unless you stopped leveling.

You could play three different characters, and never repeat a mission. Is SWTOR like that?

I think this is an area of the least concern actually. Each of the eight character classes has a specifically developed story line with little to no overlap (thought you may be on the same planets). While debated hotely, there is estimated to be 200 hours of unique class story for each of the main classes. if you play a character from the opposing faction there is NO overlap in the personal story lines at all.

Additionally, each planet has a multi-part world story arc that will run over several long quests to complete. This is not including the flashpoints for each faction either.

Then add warzones and world PVP on Illum plus Operations and you should be good.

Again, being Bioware and treating these story arcs like the RPGs they have produced before, replayability is not an area I am concerned about at all.

I can't believe how many people keep repeating this 200 hours of unique class story nonsense. The 200 hours that Bioware have referred to is the total hours to level a character. Only a small proportion of that is the class story, the rest is made up of missions that everyone will be doing.....and more to the point so will you be again if you roll an alt of the same faction. That is why people keep referring to it as repetitive. The story based nature of the game means that everyone in the same faction is broadly following the same plot, with just a small degree of variation decided by their class.

How was your morality challenged at Coruscant ? I mean was doing all those go fetch and go kill quests was that challeneging  for you ? Yeah ok....

The choices you ment just lead to more fedex quests and go kill quests and inbetween you get some vo. Don't see what is so good about it ?

Companions are pretty much useless. They just get in the way and ruin the social aspect of the game.

The game will be extremely popular and sell millions. Frosts your pumpkin doesn't it?

Oh you re too funny. It will bleed subs, no shit, but it will draw in alot more then the 2 you mentioned after that initial loss. It s a very good game.

By the time WoW came out, it was far from being an original IP.  It was already established and brought in it's ready-made audience.

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this.

Commandos only.

{mod edit}

wait, has the NDA been totally lifted now then? I have been away from things for a while.

are we allowed to all talk about our experiences in beta?

Commandos are utterly delicious.  You're going to love them.

From my understanding it is only a partial drop for the press only. Not unless that has changed in the last day or two.

Of course they won't.  Two completely different games and two completely different styles of mmorpg.

If SWG fans were looking forward to TOR, I would worried.  That game was a mess, total garbage from the beginning.

SWG was more of an MMO, and a better game than TOR will ever be. SWTOR is a theme park, mail delivery, single player quest grinding MMO. Everything is dumbed down and repetitve trash that requires basically no skill to complete, or any thought put into it. It is honestly one of the worst MMO's I have ever played in my entire life, and has less depth to it than pretty much any MMO I have ever played.

The only preview you need of SWTOR, is it is freaking garbage. The only people that will enjoy it are the masses of brainless wannabe gamers that like everything handed to them on a silver platter. If you like single player RPG's that you have to pay a subscription fee to play, then get SWTOR.

This game is going to be done after 2 months, once everyone finishes their story quests, and sees that every other class is the same exact crap with a few new lines of dialog (but all the same quests). Like anyone in their right mind is going to play through that boring crap again. The only people that will still be around are the hardcore fans, like any game, but there is simply no way it could hold people's attention longer than that. And if it does, gaming in general needs a complete reboot, as it is turning into some of the worst stuff I have ever seen.

Stopped reading right there.  SWG was a very poor game from the very beginning.  It was full of bugs and incomplete.  NGE and CU made the game worse by trying to turn it into something a little more mainstream, but all in all...it was a crappy game any way you sliced it.  The people who actually played the game pre NGE would never admit to it for one reason only:  SWG had an exceptional community.  One of the best ever.  That was its lone redeeming feature, and a lot of the SWG fans from way back conveniently forget that it was the community, not the actual game or gameplay, that made them enjoy SWG.

Saying you won't like TOR as well as SWG is a reasonable stance to take, particularly if you aren't a fan of the themepark style of play.  But to unequivocably say that SWG is better than TOR will ever be is just ignorant, and shows a lack of understanding about what an mmorpg can be.  It also makes you come off as one of those bitter SWG fans who are butt-hurt that someone has decided to finally put a bullet in Old Yeller's head, when it should have been done years ago.

Of course they won't.  Two completely different games and two completely different styles of mmorpg.

I liked SWG, and I've preordered TOR, and trust me, I know EXACTLY what I'm getting.

Some of us MMO folks don't tie ourselves to ideological restrictions.  If a game is fun, we'll like it.  Themepark, Sandbox, or whatever.

I've been subbed to Eve and LotRO and love them both.

You sir, I what I would call "enlightened."  Would be nice if there were more people like you, but alas, most people aren't that open-minded.  They like what they like, unfortunately.

When a SWG fan has THIS to say about a game... you know for a fact it's gonna be good.  Really, that's the only useful purpose a SWG fan serves.

Here is a good example of how a quest works in TOR.

Grab the quest and listen to dialogue, then go fetch or go kill something then return and listen to more dialogue. You will be doing this the entire game over and over.  Epic stuff right ? Wait, its phenomenal! :)
