I think if they just created a cash shop to sell these vanity items people would have complained less (because it has been done before), which is quite ironic. |

The longer you subscribe, the more you earn. The awarding of Veteran Rewards is based on the entitled time on your account: specifically, how many paid days your account has been subscribed. If you bought a year's subscription your account will be credited for that year. EQNext press http://EQ3Wire.com EQ2: Freeport server |

I think EQ2 goes by account age, not positive. But lets take EQ1 as an example.
Their veteran rewards system is every year they give people another ability, from a once a day exp boost to a resist buff cooldown to a second gate spell. They add a new one in every year. If this was added in their patch notes: Added veteran rewards for 2012 and 2013. As a reminder anyone who paid through that time frame can get them, so if you dont want to wait just add to your subscription today! what do you think the response would be? |

If I'd been enjoying Rift six months, still enjoyed it, and was given a chance to buy six more months of it for around $60, not to mention getting all kinds of convenient goodies and nice looking armor, I'd be delighted to spend the money. Since I didn't find Rift enjoyable, I'll pass, but I don't see why people are upset about this. |

Originally posted by teakbois they did exactly that back in 2005 - I dont think players had issues http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=50003&month=042005 As part of EverQuest's 6th-Year Anniversary celebration, the game team is giving current EQ players** one special Veteran Reward for every year that you've been an active, paying EverQuest subscriber in good standing! This is very good news for six year vets! It means that you'll be getting six Veteran Rewards for up to six of your characters! In addition, players who purchase the special 12-month subscription will be entitled to receive their next year’s reward without having to wait* until their next year as a subscriber (subject to the launch date or account age calculation date of the veteran rewards program). For example, a three year veteran will be entitled to receive awards one through three for up to three characters. If he or she decides to purchase the special Sixth-year anniversary 12-month subscription plan, he or she will also be entitled to receive the fourth year award as a bonus without having to wait* until their fourth year as a qualifying subscriber. I don;t even remember them doing that for the 7th year, and you were right it wasn't really a big deal then. However, there are a few things to consider. 1. This was a big surprise to people, because this was *not* an MMO staple then. This was what kicked off the trend, which is now commonplace and almost expected. 2. People didn;t hate SoE then. CU hadnt even hit yet for SWG let alone NGE. Yes, there were some idiots with their 'SoE ruined EQ' crap and EQ2 wasnt a flop nor was it tremendously well received, but SoE still had a good name at this point. 3. The 7th year was bundled on to their special pricing plan, the best deal they had ever offered.
Again, if they did this today they would get reamed.
Maybe I am being a little hard on Trion, but I do not like some the little things they do which to me are gaint warning signs. Like, as Ive mentioned, the bit on the launcher reminding me I can upgrade to the CE and get bigger bags and an ugly ass turtle mount. I know CEs are nothing new, but usually they are just that, collector's editions. Once release is passed they are done with. But not with Trion. In fact, by doing this every time I want to play, I feel like I didnt buy the full game or something. By the way Blizzard: if you did this you would make millions. People like those CE pets.
I honestly didnt think anything of what Trion did until I was sitting in Sanctum and saw someone get the 24 month veteran achievement. Made me think 'how is this possible? most someone could possibly have is 18 months...' but then realized with the game cards its possible. Its tacky for a game so young. Makes it tough for me to see this as a *genuine* thank you as opposed to a 'please subscribe longer, well give you stuff'. |

Originally posted by Madimorga The way it is "labeled" in this thread - there would have been less of an issue. "Veteran" Rewards != "Loyalty" Rewards Trion announced Vet rewards - when in fact, they were announcing Loyalty rewards. There is a difference. It comes down to tense. Vet rewards are for the past loyalty that you have shown. Loyalty rewards are for past and future. Given that the RIFT rewards are mainly future bound...which you can get now; it was a double slap in the face of RIFT Vets. I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again? Heh, I find these posts humorous. I payed for my 6m script right at beta, just saw that i can get a year play time for 8.99 a month if i pay it in advance... my jaw dropped at that kind of savings. Hell if trion wants to give me perks on top of me saving that kind of money, i will gladly pay for a year script and take the rewards to boot. You dont have to beat me over the head to see something so simple as saving money and getting free shit for it. Anything else being put in this thread about greed is utter nonsense, well unless you're talking about my greed. :) |

back in 2005, when SOE announced that you could buy year sub for 99.00 and get next years vet reward I did the same thing --- the vet rewards are just gravy, the sub savings are where its really at
I agree Veteran is the wrong word to use but its been used like this in mmos for 7 years now EQNext press http://EQ3Wire.com EQ2: Freeport server |

If they gave me vanity armor for doing so? great! If not? well I save 5 a month which was my whole point! perspective son ;) People are waaay too critical now adays. |

None of these games check if you are actually playing your subscription so in that respect they are all the same. Trion's system however is better because at least you get the rewards to enjoy them while you're still playing. Consider a game which rewards based on active account age, not paid time: Game comes out and I start playing. I play it for 12 months then cancel (wether I pay 12mo at a time or 12x monthly). I get a loyalty reward at the end of my time that I never get to use. End result: I paid for 12mo and got nothing I could use for it. Trion's model: I pay for 12mo and I get my reward as soon as those 12mo have been paid. If I pay it in advance I get it off the bat and enjoy it for 12mo. If I pay monthly I get it at the beginning of my 12th month so at the very least I get to enjoy it for a month before I quit. End result: I paid for 12mo and got to use a reward for 1-12 months. WoW's model is even worse: I might be paying for the account. I might have logged in almost every day of the year but if I miss a narrow anniversary window I'm out of luck. |
