Eh....Playing through the entire game solo really turned me off to the game overall. Don't get me wrong, Dead Island did a lot of things right but one big thing it did wrong was scale the entire game for four players no matter how many are actually playing. That combined with the fact that if you're playing alone there's no bot-controlled allies to watch your back left a really bad taste in my mouth. But I could see it working as an MMO, naturally as was stated in the article some massive overhauls and changes would have to be implemented but it isn't beyond the realm of possibility. |

Have a look at what Undead Labs are working on my friend, its admittedly on a console, but it promises much.

First screenshot was released a few weeks ago. They are using the Cryengine3. Looks really good for an Xbox 360 MMO. |

I don't think that it would make a good MMO, too many people, however it would make a great SMOG (Slightly Multiplayer Online Game, a term I believe I coined myself). This is something like Minecraft where small servers can have as few as two, to as much as several hundred, but are still persistent - not round based. I think a lot of games have been made into MMOs that would make much better SMOGs. As the number of players increase the signifiicance of each decreases. In a single player game you can have godly player, in a MMO you are a gear in the machine at most*. With a SMOG the players can affect the game more significantly, e.g. making fortified buildings without cluttering the whole map with them. Also specific settings for zombies could be set. I'm a zombie purist, I don't like my undead running, just countless, and I could set it like that on my server. * Not to say I don't think that fits in some games, or else I wouldn't have joined this site ;) |
