I am sorry but, if this is really the case, it is absurd. I dont understand how a SW fan would be able to become immersed in such a virtual world with any John Schmoe running around like a Jedi Knight.

Try watching the whole 6 movies and you realize there's battles where a lot of jedis take on a lot of non jedis and gets butchered. Not to mention this game is set thousands years before the movies. Also this is not a movie, this is a game, a massive multiplayer game, you cant make a massive multiplayer game without thousands of John Schmoe's takin part in it. /thread?

Ps. I like SW games, I dont want the games not to be released just because there's a lot of John Schmoe's running around, the more SW movies/games the better. Go play/watch something else if it feels wrong and ignore this game, problem solved (cant argue with that, no one is forcing).

What I find funny about this question is, examples of this in other games. I mean lets take a Jedi and compare them as they are in their time of existence against other "super badasses".

First COH/V, DCU, CO. Anyone can be a super hero?

STO, anyone can be a Captain of a ship (Kirk, Picard)?

AOC anyone can be the chosen one?

WOW, anyone can be a Paladin?

EQ, anyone can be a wizard? Just about all fantasy MMO's, Anyone can be a powerful mage?

All MMO's, anyone can have advanced medical skills?

I could go on for hours here. The fact of the matter is Jedi are "teh popularzzz". Of course they're going to open that avenue to players. Most make the mistake of thinking every Jedi to exist was a Ben, Luke, Anakin/Vader, Yoda,Exar or a Windu. That just isn't the case, Jedi die all the time, and face different demises.

IN the case of a game anything can be explained away especially class options. The obvious thing here is, every class is representative of a badass, not some grunt or average Joe.

Becoming a Jedi or Sith is a long, hard way only few people were able of doing that.

If you will the Elite or the Elite

Its a video game and i hate to break it to you but most people dont want to have to grind for 6 months just to play the class they wanted to play in the first place. Video games are about fun, aren't they?

Well then they shouldn't be able to become a Sith or Jedi simple as that. After all its about staying true to the lore?

Explain to me why people who want to play a Star Wars game should not be allowed to start with a Jedi/Sith class. Really, i'd love to hear the thinking of someone like yourself as to why they shouldn't be allowed. Bear in mind that you will have to apply the same arguements you bring to every other class in the game seeing as in a real life scenario all of them would have to train for years to become what they are.

Video games are not real life, if they were you'd have to spend 20 to 30 years in them before getting to play the class you want to. Been there done that and have no interest in seeing it emulated in a video game with Fantasy or Science Fiction settings.

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

does the op understand that MMOs are supposed to appeal to the masses? yeah so some hard-core SW fans might get their feelings hurt. whats important is they put out a goodgame thats enjoyable to the majority since every game will have their anit-fans and haters.

Why ask a question in the subject line if you are going to provide your own answer?

Yes - anyone, everyone AND their dog (if they can play an MMO) can become a jedi/sith

In an IP where jar-jar binks exists, han shot first and vader screams "noooooooo" like a little girl not once but twice, all BTW changed by the creator of said world...and YOU are concerned with lore?

Really?

its a VIDEO GAME where i would imagine ALOT of star wars fans grew up wanting to be a jedi or be darth vader, and the object of any release is to cater to said fans and gain subscribers....your confsued by this?

Jedi were not rare in the time period the game takes place in. It's as simple as that.

The Old Republic takes place somewhere 3500 years before the movies, when Jedi were in abundance.    Do I think it is stupid that the entire game will be Jedi & Sith?  Sure.  Expecically since 4 of the 8 classes are force based.   And of course those classes are designed to be the most appealing..

It'll be Bioware's challenge to make classes that are non-force based more appealing to the masses..  So far, that doesn't seem to be going too well...

Most people I know who will be playing the game won't be rolling a force user first time through. The non-force classes are appealing for many reasons. It's a personal preference, if you find the force classes more appealing so be it.

OP, the game takes place thousands of years before the movies. This information has been readily available since the game was announced. Why would you start this thread?

They created the entire setting, they have every right to add things to it. Just because your personal vision of Star Wars is based on the feature films means absolutely nothing, and is a false expectation that will only lead you to disappointment. The films themselves are but a tiny piece of the entire picture.

LA can add anything they want to the IP, and it is still just as much Star Wars as it ever was.

Becoming a Jedi or Sith is a long, hard way only few people were able of doing that.

If by a few, you actually mean thousands, then I agree. If not, you need to brush up on your lore.

If you will the Elite or the Elite

Random gibberish?

Even in the movies, where the Jedi are far fewer than they were in the era that SWTOR takes place in, the Jedi were far from invincible.

In Episode II, Obi Wan, who was one of the most powerful Jedi of his time, was beaten in a duel by Jango Fett, and almost killed.

The three Jedi that weren't Mace Windu that went to arrest Palpatine in Episode III sure looked pretty useless in battle also.

Palpatine, Dooku, Anakin, Yoda, Mace Windu, Obi Wan, and Luke were all exceptional force users.  Their skills are certainly not the norm.

I would have thought someone genuinely concerned with lore and the IP would know the plural of Jedi is Jedi (not Jedis, Jedis' or Jedies).

Yes, even you can become a Jedi someday.

You have to look at the time period in which this game is set Yamota. It's not during Luke Skywalkers time but way before it when Jedi and Sith ruled the universe.

Exactly the reason why I think SW is not what it used to be. True to the lore (check wiki) Jedi Masters or Sith Darths are more powerful than your usual bountyhounter, period.  So if people want to play such cool powerful classes they should have to earn the right of playing them (= epic accesline if you will), ,simple as that.

I'm aware they are not reallife but MMORPGS aren't like your usual game, they once were about doing greater things. Just look at Hutball can you imagine Jedi and Sith agree on playing Hutball against each other, instead of just killing the opponent?

If a game has a huge IP I expect it staying true to it. You can disagree as much as you want, but you will soon see why allowing everyone and their cat becoming force users from the start will be a mistake.

Definitely an Ackbar trap thread, don't your stars go up if you get a good amount of comments or something along that line? The argument offered is so weak that a child who only watched the pre-quels could rebuttal it.

You mean this isnt Star Wars Online? Where there was only one badass jedi and one badass sith?

Ok gotcha this is Star Wars : The Old Republic. Where there were lots of badass jedi and sith.

Guess they should probably put that in the title of the game...oh wait....

We have also to keep in mind that not all jedis were like Obi Wan or Luke, there were also mediocre jedis that we don't know of and died soon.

I don't see the issue from a game standpoint.  Once the masses figure out the leet build, that will be most of what you see in game.  Jedi or otherwise.

It's a game in 2011.  Three months in there will be build and leveling guides all over the Internet.

What I'm curious about is if Bioware will play whack-a-mole with the nerf bat, like the other guys do.

Real knights were rare as well 700 years ago and not anyone could become one...

While games could limit one "noble" class for each account I am not sure this would be popular and forcing you to unlock the class with another character makes no sense whatsoever.

It is just a game, let people play what they want.

As for powerful I am not sure that Luke really would beat Han Solo in a down and dirty fight. And making certain classes more powerful than others is bad enough in a PvE only game (it works if you need all classes for grouping) but is not an option for any game with PvP. While this might be unrealistic we see worse things in TOR, I don't remember Luke looting people in the movies...

You were never going to play SWTOR to begin with so i wil just call this topic ..an attempt to start flames. Secondly it is a game and yes devs have to take certain liberties with IP because not eveything from movie can be successfully turned into a game.

Moreover, SWTOR exists thousands of years before SW movies and in those times Jedis were not hunted or endangered species. There were many many jedis and they were everywhere.

I do.  He killed a sand crab when training and pulled a +3 Sword of Uberness.  What the crab was doing with a sword, we'll never know. *grin*
