No, gankers do not have low self esteem....It's honestly just funny to hear the nerd raging that follows.

That's very difficult to credit when you read their complex construct of justifications--including the contradiction inherent in the above.

Lol... do you feel special for using big words on the internet? Explain to me how my statement is contradictory. Because I think it's funny that some people care wayyyyy too much about video games, it automatically makes me have low self-esteem and have inferiority/superiority issues? Are you citing an actual psychological study, or are you just pulling it out of your ass? That's what I thought.

Big words?  Where?  Where did he use big words? lol  Maybe someone should pay more attention in English class and less attention to PvP games. People who enjoy inflicting pain on others, in whatever form (mental or physical), have some sort of mental problem themselves.  Find a psychologist or psychiatrist that DISagrees with that.  Good luck.

By the way....I've not seen a logical post from you here.  I have only seen posts from a bitter PvPing 22 year old without enough life experience to put together the logical things OTHER people have posted. Those things make no sense to you because you lack the years to make sense of them.

Since when does age give the ability to think logically? Again, correlation does not equal causation. Granted, age and logical thinking have a very high correlation, but that still doesn't prove causation. I know plenty of people in their younger years that are more mature and logically minded than their older counterparts, but to be fair, I know a lot of really immature and illogical people my age.

Anyways, that's beside the point. Am I really the one that's bitter here, or is it all of you the ones that are bitter? Seems like all of you have been ganked in the past and are now bitter towards gankers, unable to see any other side of the argument.

There is no other side of the argument, that is the point. No matter how you attempt to justify it, defend it or justify it, ganking serves no purpose in an MMO. Again, we are talking about ganking new players to the extent that they have no chance to win. We are not entering into a hypothetical discussion about calling in guildmates, etc.... We are talking one on one ganking where the newbie player has no chance at defending themself, retreating, and is subject to repeated harassment from a higher level player.

Just because a game allows it to happen, it is not justified. Your car allows you to drive 110 MPH but the speed limit is still 65 MPH. Just because developers let a player access newbie zones, they are not giving you a blank check to gank new players.

Clearly ganking is frowned upon and many games have gone to dedicated systems to prevent it from happening (UO with Trammel, DAOC with a walled off RVR zone, TOR with not allowing access to the newbie zones).  Games even will suspend players that repeatedly gank. The majority of people do not want gankers around.

I have never heard a clear justification of ganking. Over 10 years in the MMO world and I am still waiting for it. I have heard reasons sure but no justification.

I diagree. I like DOTA when the game is at a high competition level (start, midgame usually). When my team destroys the competition I just want to finish the game to start another. Unless the other team kept teasing or bragging during the game there are no special feelings.

But it's so perfect!

Since I've joined the Dark Pony fan club I've been trying to stalk you anyway... hmmm.....

I just wish people would differentiate some more between motivations for "ganking" as well as the different definitions.

The players that willingly seek out lower leveled players to one-shot and grief are just a small (often pubescent) group compared to all those players out in the world looking for some hawt pvp action: i.e. the "red = dead" kind who don't think so much about levels, nor about odds which might or might not be in their favor. Sadly they are often tossed on one bunch with the first group of sadistic, angsty 13 year olds.

I belong to the "red = dead" kind of players (though I have weak moments and let enemies live sometimes) and despise the first kind (and love to hunt them down) but that doesn't mean I won't kill a low leveled character occasionaly. And I wont mind if others treat me the same. The little bugger should have seen me and ran away :)

I think you read too much into my post. while I don't differentiate between kinds of players, I generally do not see people who don't camp lowbie areas to kill them on sight as gankers.

Roger :)

Actually I think players like me could be called gankers too (red = dead means a lot of lowbie victims who were in the wrong place at the wrong time) but we aren't intentionally seeking out noobies to grief them, if you catch my drift.

It wasn't intended for just you though, but for the general sentiment of people raging about anyone that dares to kill lower leveled players in whatever circumstances.

The contradiction is that for some reason gankers like to bother people enough to hear them complain-to know you are ruining their attempt to have fun and rejoicing in it. That implies some issue with the ganker-low self-esteem or whatever. Most people don.t find enjoyment in doing those things, they find enjoyment in other, more productive parts of gaming or life. And you've said that those who don'y like being ganked should leave game to find new one. If gankers are so bored with their game that they can't find anything else to do, maybe they should find a new game.

The definition of deriving joy from the pain of others is sadism. Most people instinctively recognize this, even without all the social cues that are lacking in online interactions. It's possible that the missing social cues leads to sadistic behavior from people with an otherwise low level of sadistic behavior. In other words, everyone has at least little sadist in them, but it's held in check or filtered by being around people in social situations.

For instance, when I hang around with the people at work, we often make jokes at each others' expense. Each of us are often the recipient of those jokes. We are all taking joy in the pain of others, so are we sadistic? It's largely consensual and it's a bonding activity so no, we're not being sadistic, even though we are engaging in what would otherwise be sadistic behavior. i.e. Taking joy in the pain of another individual.

When someone is killing low level players, they aren't bonding with them and it's not consensual. They may not realize they are causing pain to other players (emotional or psychological pain) or they may assume they aren't, because it's virtual and really, it's a game about killing other players. In these cases, it's not really sadistic.

When you get into killing low level players specifically for the purpose of causing them pain, you're getting into sadistic behavior. In the grand scheme of things it's mostly harmless, but it's still sadistic behavior. Other people recognize this and that's why they get angry at the 'gankers' and angry about this subject.

The 'gankers' realize they are causing some sort of pain by the reactions they get, and taking joy in it they continue the conversation.

I'm not a psychologist, or a sociologist or anything of the kind. I did stay at a Holiday Inn once.

Understood, I'm a big fan of - you went some place you shouldn't have been or weren't prepared for, you suffer the consquences. Ganking is specific in mind mind to someone who camps the helpless. May not be to other's but that kind of behavior reminds me of "beta wloves". Anything else for the most part doesn't seem to carry with it the same sort of challengeless ego stroke.

Because some people are just so  either bad players or feel the need to be "powerfull" among something, both things are bad and both things taint them, true players face people equal or higuer to test their strengh, at least in mmo's, otherwise they are just lamers...

what makes camping nubs fun?

imo its more of a cat / mouse type thing ..when im playing any kind of pvp server of these days and theres no lvl req. when fighting i just poke at em to get a responce..me "being the cat" may shoot sumpin at em or give em a tickle and be about my way..them "being a mouse" come at me full force trying to kill me i put em in their place or leave em near death...but if im pvping / playing a epic game like shadowbane i play to crush whats ever in my path..nomatter how many or who lol

thats the problem i think with pvp in mmo's nowa days..alot of people that want to pvp ..want to experiance the feeling of other mmo's that they played in the past..why? cuz pvp back then was and is epic ..haveing a sence that theres danger around every corner is what makes pvp ..pvp

and ganking..if you like pvp mmo's and you have played many diff ones most people have had been ganked 1 time in another..over and over and over again..hell,even to log off and play an atl till the lil twat moves along to pick on someone else..or to even log on your main char. and hunt the lil twat down..imo its fun..its what pvp is about survival of the fittest

pvp of now is just cluttered with arena type pvp that is plane out dull..you cant even have decent fun in them because you got derps that sit in arena 24/7 and think they belong to some elite league of arena pvp..not to mention that most games are giveing either badges or rewards that make that char even more OP ..imo if you want to play CTF or TEAM DEATH MATCH go play COD i really hate these concepts in pvp mmo's now days theres no more open world pvp it has become "you have to pvp here if you want to pvp" or Q up for a battleground

It is not that to me at all. The cat chases the mouse because the cat knows the mouse has a slim chance to get away unless the mouse is named Jerry and cat named Tom.

Ganking newbs is like the mouse lying there tied down with rope, and concrete shows on while wearing a sign that says eat me when the cats shows up.

Pwnd nub!

Sorry just had to. I strongly disagree. In a war level isn't important. If there's an enemy out in contested territory, he must be destroyed whatever his level. Doesn't make me a lamer.

Lamers are griefers who purposely seek out lowbies and kill them repeatedly just because they can.

@Leoghan "I'm a big fan of - you went some place you shouldn't have been or weren't prepared for, you suffer the consquences."

Couldn't agree more.

The paid professionals who make games that millions of people buy and enjoy seem to agree and take a particular side to this issue.

But, obviously, the half dozen people in this thread who take the other side of the issue are the ones who REALLY know what's what...

I mean, obviously anyone who doesn't agree is inferior and not as smart as me, right?

Isn't this how forums work?

Just because a person may like bad design doesn't mean it's not still BAD DESIGN.

I'm still waiting for a legal case that equates this type of behavior with cyber-bullying.   I'm only surprised that we haven't seen one yet.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Now I'd say that anyone who took ganking/griefing to court in RL is pretty messed up themselves -

The smart person would simply just not play such a poorly designed game.

And when games cost money to maintain as MMOs do, the last thing you want to do is force players out - hence, why this arguement is completely stupid, because there is not a single person who can logically argue that it is not BAD DESIGN.

Even if it's fun or you enjoy it, doesn't mean it's not still bad design.

Period. Fact. Done.

I'm still waiting for a legal case that equates this type of behavior with cyber-bullying.   I'm only surprised that we haven't seen one yet.

I don't think that will happen since it's happening in an environment where the behavior can be limited by mechanics. i.e. new players are in protected areas and can't be killed by high level players. It's not the same thing as being bullied on Facebook because there's no way to stop the behavior using the system.

I don't think it would be cyber bullying unless the participants know each other outside of the game and there are consequences outside of the game. Most behavior that wouldn't be tolerated anywhere else is normal in a PvP situation.

** edit **
Dammit Spock! Stop doing that!

It's all in the EULA.

People have murdered each other over MMO stuff. Seriously. It's sad, but true.

Um...so you think Icewhite used big words?  wow.
