Because they are totally different game modes?

It's a good question, and I can only offer my own perspective.

For someone who can jump on, play a couple hours, and then log off, the constant and persistent  W v W v W mode has more appeal. Arenas and private tournaments are an awesome feature, but require much more time ot dedicate yourself to a team, learning how to coordinate and play off each other. If I had the time, I'd be good at that sort of thing. But there might be more people like myself who just want to jump into a huge, chaotic brawl (complete with point control and such, of course) and help their team out as best they can.

Which isn't to say I'd turn down the chance to play in smaller scale PvP.

Quite simple really. A lot of people (like myself) are quite bored with the whole 'arena' and 'competitive PvP' play thing since we've done it many times in the past and are quite bored with it.

I dont like when a game gets overly serious in PvP. That doesn't mean to say I wont play competitively. I've played many games at very high levels of competition and some people frankly can't cope with the level of stress and high pressure situations offered by competitive PvP.

Also WvWvW is to some more rewarding since you feel like you have worked with a large group of people to achieve a greater good.

Personally I will do both but be biased towards WvWvW

Anyway back to this post. I think this could attract a much bigger audience to GW2...especially the ruleset business.

It will really re-enforce the 'Player run tournament' kind of gameplay.

this feature doesn't really promote a massive persistent/seemless world, but I guess we all knew that from the start...

Isnt that what WvWvW and dynamic events are for?

Anyway this is a really cool feature, get a bunch of buddies to play together in one arena and won't have noobs or trolls having to ruin the game for alot of people.

isn't an mmo supposed to feel massive? wasn't that what everyone hated about WoW? making it more of an e-sport game? I'm actually a little suprised how many people like this feature when the same people hated WoW bg's/arenas, ignorance is bliss I guess.

I should also point out that I actually like this feature, I also liked arenas in WoW, and bg's in general as it made pvp more skillful instead of just zerg battles. But I can't help but point out how hypocritical people can be.

Its not intended to, it's meant to add more choice and something which other MMO's dont currently offer. I don't see how that can be a bad thing no matter how you look at it even for those it won't affect or aren't interested in the feature.

Well, that's kind of what I'm getting at, now that a few of you have confirmed my suspicions.  When a game offers both, people mostly do arenas.  Especially the competitive intense pvp players that are in pvp guilds, etc, are typically drawn to arenas.  This weakens the open world experience.

I loved counterstrike, and if I wanted the great combo of mmo + counterstrike, this feature announcement is jawdropping.  But I loved DAoC more, which is why I consider arena play a detraction from the WvWvW play.  Because of this I'm super looking forward to Prime, but tbh, I'll probably try gw2 as well, just because it might be fun so why not.

what is there not to like?

In League of Legends you can create your own custom matches where you choose mode and map. Now you will be able to do that in gw2 aswell... If that's not your thing then don't do it. Go play WvWvW or 'official' tournament matchers or any other amazing pvp gw2 has to offer.

Server wide bonuses for the winning side of the WvWvW conflict, and the maps themselves offer something entirely different from arena matches in terms of gameplay.

I don't think they meant dedicated servers.

Really interesting.  Im sure groups of friends and guilds will make very solid use of this.

I cant really see any problems caused by this either.  Good move by Anet.  But then Im really not surprised.

I wouldn't say so, not this strict at least.

Other games that I've played that use both are WoW and WAR, in war, at least in my servers, when everyone was starting to get more RR they just wanted open world pvp, or RvR, there were massive battles and 5 am organized server pushes etc. Waking up to see Altdorf being attacked was nothing new.

In WoW they just completely destroyed any sense of outside world besides the city, at this point in wow, if you made elywnn forest/stormwind and durotar/orgrimmar player hubs, everything else instanced no one would notice.

So ofc with the many community/server transfers, flying mounts, and much more WoW has destroyed the World PvP to a point of no return. seriously, it really is a point of no return, so I dont think comparing instanced pvp with world pvp there is fair.

As for GW2, its very simple, you go into Instanced PvP you gain nothing for you main character. If you want to see some kind of progression, look cool or whatever, you will do WvWvW. Plus some kind of PvE bonuses yet to determine.

Also, they haven't really said anything relevant about WvWvW other than "its there, we are not ready to show it", so until they are, and they properly show the rewards for it and what not, we can only wait and see.

So far there is very little room for disapointment for me in PvP, and Anet earned my trust when it comes to it, so i'll wait.....

Sounds awesome and it explains how GW2 is going to have player ran tournaments.
