I assume this just means hosting your PvP matches in the same way you can do that in FPS games and not as in hosting an actual server in the mmo-sense of the word. I hope people's expectations are not inflated because of the wording.

I dont think they meant locally hosted servers..... they where talking about tournaments and matches.... that players can organise on the official servers.... Including creating their own rulesets...

It creates a bunch of issues, such as lag, cheating, and disconnecting if players are hosting their own servers running a server host, whereas Anets hardware will likely be more stable, and give a host of options for rulesets without some kind of backwards modding going on or something of that nature.     I'm also not sure what character you'll be able to use,  but if its a hosted game on a local server, its unlikely you'll use your own.

 

I love the idea of hosted games - most of the time - but I've been in some pretty bad -nightmare worthy- matches from hosted games.

There is already software to help protect against cheating in servers. Many games use player hosted servers(which are really rented by players) to play pvp in fps. The stats and progress is the one thing Im not sure how they will handle, Im guessing they will only be saved if they are approved and signed player servers.

im not saying there isnt any PVE in GW2.. just that the PVP is the games 'killer app'  its something that arenanet do pretty well, and .. if the PvP takes more work, then its because the game is heavily PvP focused..  thats a good thing

I'm starting to think that if they can deliver on the same quality for both the PvE and PvP aspects of top titles then it may very well be a killer, not a single game killer but rather an acceptance of current payment model killer. I know many would cite GW1 as not killing anything but this game is something completely different than its predecessor.

Whether that's a good or bad thing others can decide but it could very well be a massive injection of doubt.

silly, WoW isnt about the PvP ... GW2 is.. each to their strengths..

 

GW2 is as much about PVE as it is PVP as a mattter of fact up till now their is more PVE content.

Although I agree that GW2 is as much a PvE as it is a PvP game, the reason they only showed PvE content untill now is because they show stuff when they feel it is ready to be shown and PvP just takes a lot more work.

 

Lol..i dont need a history lesson on how ArenaNet opperate having played GW on and off since release. Even when WvWvW is more revealed GW2 will still have more PVE content than it does PVP. Yes it will have a lot of PVP content but anyone who is not blind can see that PVE content is bigger than PVP content.

Allowing private servers??? If this is really true, they are about to set fire to the industry. As in Anet is a bunch of pirates just pulling into a small port and everybody else is a lazy landlubber sitting on the docks wondering what that skull and crossbones flag could mean. Prepare to be pillaged and rap... you get the idea.


But when your payment model is pay for the game and expansion, not access to the server, why not?

The type of pvp servers the public can host is the balanced "battleground" type. The game is b2p and you won't be using your own in-game (leveling) characters in this pvp. Or have I missed something?

It creates a bunch of issues, such as lag, cheating, and disconnecting if players are hosting their own servers running a server host, whereas Anets hardware will likely be more stable, and give a host of options for rulesets without some kind of backwards modding going on or something of that nature.     I'm also not sure what character you'll be able to use,  but if its a hosted game on a local server, its unlikely you'll use your own.

 

I love the idea of hosted games - most of the time - but I've been in some pretty bad -nightmare worthy- matches from hosted games.

I have to disagree with this, theres nothing like hosting a game on your own equipment.  I host all kinds of games from sports, FPS shooters, Real Time strategy(RTS), I will definitely be using this feature as its what i do.

Because WvWvW happens in the open world rather than an closed instanced arena. The Myst are in an open zone that anyone can enter at any level and it's more akin to daoc rvr with three factions but in this case it's servers going at it for two weeks of open world pvp.
