I've recently started playing AoC and am having a blast. What I find most fun is the combat system. So much so that I even think I'm spoiled now: I don't wanna play auto-attack-MMOGs again. So I've been wondering: are there other MMOGs out there with such a combat system, that gives me the opportunity to win on my real skills, instead of the regular WoW-like auto-attack? |

hmm person skill only applys to FPS .. Not in mmo, you might ask why i say this but when you get gear/weapons and these items have stats on them they make you better then the person with the less stated gear.. MMO = Luck. oh i got a crit !! sweet ohh another crit lol another crit ... mmo combat is all rng combat. but i do like mmo combat still
p.s not really an MMO more like a lobby game the last time i played it i dont know if they made it more open or what not but this game there is no auto attack its hack n slack. I play games just like you |

To this day AOC's combat system is not only rare or one of a kind, but also a strong love hate relationship early days of AOC the combat system was a string of 4 to 5 step combos which was later streamlined down to 1 to 3 steps to broaden the accessibility for others. im pretty certain even know there are a large number of AOC players that tried other mmos and have a hard time going back to auto attack point and click melee combat systems. hence i said melee and not caster btw. |

If you can only auto attack in other MMOs, it is doubtful that you have developed "skills" in AoC. I can't think of any popular MMO launched in the last decade with auto attacks doing more than 10 to 15 percent of the total damage for any player in any raid. Actually, AoC did have a lot of good ideas in the game system but they got cut to dumb down the combat system. Active blocking, shields, and sprint could have been tweaked to make an interesting system for PvP. I find the chug a pot system to be quite a turn off and now it is crazy with them being sold for real cash. The combo system is similar to any MMO game I have played lately, in other MMOs you stack spells and abilities to debuff the player and or boost your damage so it is similar to following the arrows but requires knowledge of what abilities synergize. |

Originally posted by Beanpuie The very very first combat system also had 5 arrow keys instead of today's three, named "combat rose" (beta mid 2007). I still have a ton of video clips. Back then, Funcom was under the delusion that the game would also be released for the XBox and the combat system was very much more tailored towards controller-gameplay. |

The melee combat system still has 5 attack directions, but you wont unlock the last 2 directions until midlevel. That said, I think the melee combat in AoC is the main reason I keep myself sticking with this game - no other game gives me the same rush as when my dual wielding conqueror starts slicing and dicing. |

Originally posted by Tjommis And, even after a few years, watching those fatality animations STILL doesn't get old for me! Dunno if the combat system is entirely unique. D&D Online featured a hack&slash system, but AoC's is more refined. But yeah... watching my Guardian gut some poor fellow, then kick him onto his back, stand on his chest and then skewer him again with a blade.. never gets old. :D |

Originally posted by Tjommis I'm not shure, as i haven't played the game any longer than 30 days after release never reached mid level . Back in beta one had the five directions right away. |

Originally posted by rsreston I can name one that is even better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH86XuPRO04&feature=channel_video_title It is by far the best combat you will play in any mmo. Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries... |

There is no skill at all in playing combat in AoC. Played it at launch for 5 months and tryed it again after 2 years. Experienced and hardcore players have macro keyboards (example logitech g15) and while you are stumbling your fingers to get 1 skill while targeting and facing the enemy, an assasin is running around you spamming tons of skills on your body by pressing a single button. With the right hardware you can be semi god in that game. Also you can prepare your skills (very bad on my opinion). On me 80s assasin i had a combo of 5 arrows, where i press the 4 while running to the target and click the 5th to give the blow. Noone uses the defence system they impliment (shields in front, on left , on right etc) becouse it doesnt matter a lot I could go on and on for pages... i will just finish with one comment. The game was broken, is broken, and will be. They had great ideas, maybe the most revolutionary but its still the most broken game i ever played |

I'm not remotely close to being a PvP pro, but one thing I have heard again, again and again in AoC: Use macros and see yourself getting slaughtered. |

for me it's a tie between AoC and DDO. Makes it hard to play "tab and time your taps" when you've played with these combat systems. qui bono |

Originally posted by Tjommis Yeah, playing a Conq is a lot of fun. I have a few keybinds for AoC and a Razor mouse to help. I do not use macros thou. Playing a melee in AoC is a lot of fun. |

Should of clarified further:
Combos and Keys: yea midlevel you get all 5 combat melee keys , but between early AOC and AOC now, combo strings were reduced from 5 to 3 or 1.
Macros: ya using Macros as melee was pretty much like going to a maximum security Prison holding a bar of soap in one hand and wearing a speedo.
I dont play AOC anymore due to work (thank god of work actually) but if some one talks about that game, I brings back memories let alone the misery of a game that couldve been so much more. |

Real skills = Pressing four buttons for one action?
Hardly. It's childish, Simon-Saysesque tedium that does nothing but add clunk to what could be a pretty solid combat system and feel. |

Original? maybe..
Among the worst? YES Best mmorpg combat system imo is WOW type of combat, tab target as people call it, many games try to copy it but never suceed with the sharpness, smoothness, but thats just my opinion, and the opinion of some millions of people... |
