I think Bioware have been very shrewd in following the KOTOR art style in SWTOR.
KOTOR is one of the most popular games of its generation and has pretty wide appeal, not unlike the Warcraft games before WoW. Just as Blizzard kept WoW familiar to the masses of non-MMO playing Warcraft fans (which paid off on a big way), I think Bioware have done the right thing by not opting for a different look to KOTOR for TOR. |

Originally posted by Chilliesauce {mod edit} I agree, it is all so subjective. I disagree with the majority regarding the graphics of AOC. I think technically they are OK, but some of the most bland I have ever seen..but maybe that is more the artistry..its easy to blur the lines. I did feel that technically AOC had the best water in an MMO I had seen when I played it a couple of years ago. |

Originally posted by Gibbonici I agree. I think they have taken the art style and graphics of KOTOR and brought it up to 2011 for an MMO. That is exactly what I wanted. I don't think they look at all like WOW, though I know a lot of people who love WOW's graphics and artistry. I think those who were satisfied with KOTOR graphics when that game was released will be equally satisfied with this game upon release. |

Art style it looks nice, as for best graphics I can think of a few other mmos out there with better graphics. |

Basically all it comes down to is kids who have never played KOTOR and dont realize that it came out before WoW had this style of graphics, and since it takes place in the KOTOR story line (further back) and has already been stated that its basically KOTOR 3,4 ,5 , etc, it only makes sense that it would have the same "Style" of graphics just improved by aton. |

The character models look like they are still being rendered. And from the first youtube video, the animations look piss poor, they walk and stand like mannequins. When he gets hit by blaster fire...he just stands there like "Wow, I don't feel a thing..." no recoil, no nothing.
Now go look at some Guild Wars 2 gameplay footage. Character animations (especially for the Asura) are amazing, the way they run, are hit, swing, stand, everything feels organic and natural...not plastic looking. |

Graphics and animations are the only things I like about TOR...Go figure. I really don't see how people can compare the art style to WoW. Yeah the bodily proportions are a little silly but that's about as far as the comparison goes, for me. I don't see the style being overly cartoonish at all. Increased realism usually means increased polygons and decreased performance. I guess that's partly the reason why they went this way. |

Even if the poly count and texture detail of the character models isn't on AoC-level of high detail, they do have the most reactiveness I've seen from MMO character models so far: in contrast to many other MMO's including new upcoming ones, SWTOR's character models do show reaction upon getting hit, even to the point of reacting upon and countering attacks from opponents. Originally posted by MMO.Maverick Can you post a video with that? I mean, it's not that i don't belive you, but i have seen many SWTOR videos and the npcs just stand there shooting while they are getting hit, no reaction at all.
Maybe they are older videos? |

Oh, btw, it would be interesting to see what other MMO's, current or upcoming ones, have in the form of reactive combat animations. People complain about it when it comes to SWTOR, but are completely silent about other MMO's including new ones where there's zero of it. Originally posted by MMO.Maverick Take a look at Vindictus. Although there seem to be a hell of a lot more knockbacks and knockdowns there than in SWTOR, it might be frustrating. But each time one of the mobs or your character is hit, there certainly is a reaction. |

Originally posted by DJJazzy Vindictus is one of the very few exceptions, you have to admit that. In fact, some don't regard it even as a proper MMORPG, although personally I find Vindictus' combat mechanics the best there is currently around in the MMO genre. However, like said, reactive combat animation is hardly present at all in MMORPG's, I can't recall seeing any in GW2 or Rift, yet when it comes to SWTOR you'll find people complaining about the absence of it while it actually is ingame, while keeping completely silent about it when it comes to other MMO's where it IS missing. That's kind of ironic. The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's |

I know the argument about waiting to see the actual game and deciding from there whether the graphics will be any good. But I think that its a fairly safe bet that they will be pretty good. Its hard for me to believe that Bioware would spend the time and effort that they have and put out something terrible. I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet a paycheck that its gonna be pretty good. They are coming for you! |

Originally posted by MMO.Maverick Take a look at this flashpoint walkthrough (i think it's the newest one but im not sure) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flgNJvKkYIU From 10:00 to 10:12 The only reaction i saw was the trooper dodging 1 laser shot, and of course when he dies. 12 seconds getting hit by Jedis, no reaction, zero, nada. This is what i was talking about, it looks particulary dull in ranged classes, shooting with a rifle at point blank while getting hit and showing no reaction at all... |

Originally posted by mmorpgbro Of course reactive combat animation isn't happening every time a player gets hit
Characters not reacting on it when getting hit by arrows or caster fireballs has been the case in practically all the MMO's including Rift and GW2, but when it comes to SWTOR, then you decide to complain about it?! Oh, the irony and double standards... The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's |

Originally posted by MMO.Maverick Im talking about ranged classes getting hit by melee clases, it looks lame when that happens.
There are no double standards here, if GW2, Archeage, Tera, The Secret World, Blade & Soul, etc, released a video with subpar outdated generic combat like SWTOR i would say the same.
There is a reason why older mmos don't have combat reactions. They are old.
This is all IMO of course. |
