Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this.

Anyone else tired of hearing "if done right"?  No system will ever be done right because it is impossible to predict the ingenuity of people desire to act like asses.

I agree with you.

Why not make the pvp a choice?

If you looked around a bit, you might have realized its supposed to be ffa pvp on the third island, not the first two. Think of the third island as 0.0 sec

The only people that will generate bloods if they kill you are your own faction members.

As it stands the other faction and the Reds will be able to kill you anywhere with impunity and loot you, so yeah you might be kind of protected from your neighbour PKing you but thats not gonna help you much when gank squads perma camp you when all you wanna do is gather your crops...

An optional PvP server, with it limited to the 3rd continent and surrounding waters and BGs, would be what I am looking for.

Open world PvP in level/ gear based games is just for angry teens to use as therapy and I don't play games to be part of that.

I actually agree with this statement.  While many people are now scared of SOE this seems to be the type of sandbox/themepark hybrid that many of us expect EQ Next to be.

lol you really expect that for EQ3 off SOE as it is now??

I fully expect it to be a cash shopped to death Free Realms with a fantasy skin.

Yeah and when they try to "improve" ArcheAge with some new game enhancements, I'm sure it's popularity will soar.

I think as long as companies like SOE don't get anywhere near this game it might be one of the best things to happen MMOs in a long time.

FUNNY you say this, since people are paying 150 for the collectors and its sold out, so I say there making money big time , and the game just started pre orders, so just because you don't like it doesn't mean 6 million others won't. Case closed.

Honestly, as bad as it sounds, you cannot let the players have total control.  You can let them THINK they have control, then manipulate things behind the scenes.

True that, but thats the fault of how PvP is seen these days. Many gamers are imature little kids (even if they are 30+ years old). I mean you probally will try to defend it now but look around in WoW, AoC, etc and especially on PvP servers. I played on a pvp server in AoC and you just didn't get to play much anymore when certain pvpers where around. Even though the lvl difference was mega high they still gangked the shit out of the lower lvls in groups even. You couldn't quest at all and even grouping up didn't work cause you where much lower lvl in that quest area to be harmful to a group of high lvl gangkers. I don't mind getting killed once but they just raped you over and over again with corps ganking. You just had to hope some other high lvls would step in and fight these cowards off but it made questing imposible.

And i think its this kind of behavior that scares most people off. Also when we look at sandbox games they tend to be hard. This isn't a bad thing but it can be a scarry thing when you are used to themepark games. You enter the game with no clue what so ever what to do and no npc's to help you around to get started (im looking at you Mortal Online!). Add ontop that every player can kill you and the step from the save themepark ride to the big wildlife is huge. Maybe they should lower the step a bit, work their way up to a full sandbox FFA pvp game. I just don't think many MMORPGers who haven't been able to play the old MMORPG's but started with EQ and WoW just need some helping hand to get into fully sandbox and FFA pvp, not a huge step at once, but taking smaller steps towards it.

I wonder though, im intrested in this game but how far does the sandbox going? Are we able to build houses where ever we want? How much controle do we as players have on the world. Cause i noticed the term sandbox is used rather quickly these days and ends up being not so much a sandbox as you had hoped for.

My biggest consern with such a system is that the only people put on trial are people who did something. So when someone goes on trial you know they are guilty and the system ends-up bieng a popularity contest.

Only one problem:  The game is Asian.  This is a gaming culture who values repetitiveness, redundancy and the same regurgitated, re-hashed mess over and over and over again.

With ArcheAge this trial system will create a very interesting play environment. The big question is how will the interface work? When you die by a player’s hand does a pop up open which says: Send player to trial? Then a poll is created among players on the server to vote whether or not the character goes to jail? Or will the character have to be caught? Either way it almost seems like a slippery slope for a community to go down. Some players will go through great lengths to exploit the game. Others will really want to be part of a community that repects the laws of justice. Regardless depending on how the system works, it will be difficult to decide until we see the UI for the trial system.

My thought is that the Trial System will hopefully provide the part of the community that likes to play along with rules to be able to do so. It will provide us with a tool to disable the griefers and the exploiters.

I'd like to see the game decide when a player has done the wrong thing, though that might be a challenge when it comes to exploits of the game engine. Once the game has decided a player has become far too free with his killings then I'd like to see bounties enabled on that player. It is then up to the organised player base to capture him and enact his punishment.

What would the punishment be? Well I think anything from an automatic fine (either in whole from earnings or as a percentage of any money he accrues over the next two weeks playtime (or whatever period is deemed applicable)) to time spent in jail. That offers the further question of how do you represent time in jail? Well for gross misdemeanours I'd actually say time banned from the game is acceptable, and I mean outright exploitation or repeated exploitation of the free-for-all PvP system. Players that are willing to just kill anyone aren't, in my opinion, interested in playing the game.

But how do you jail players who have just gone overboard a tad? Take away their ability to attack other players for a period of time? Give them a disadvantage in PvP somehow?

It is all worthwhile to ask how AA intends to achieve all these thoughts of a trial system. What I've seen so far on AA gives me high hopes that Jake Song and team have the ability to make something very intruiging.

One other point based on the following comment:

There are a few milestones that ArcheAge needs to hit before we can really start getting excited for this game. The largest is finding a North American Publisher. Once that is established it will be great to see how the game makes the trip across the pond. Once developers get their hands on the game over here, it will be interesting to see what changes are made. I do believe the game will do well and I too am looking forward to trying it out.

Why would Western developers get their hands on the game? If it finds a publisher in the West then why would that mean it gets new developers?

I don't know about anyone else, but if it comes to Western shores then i want to play the game that's been talked about in the Korean betas. I don't want a Western namby pamby attitude added to it. We've seen what the West is doing with games and it's time to see if the East can do better.

If we get another Rift, instead of the great game that AA appears to be developing into, then I'll scream at any Western publisher/developing house that has done stuff to AA.

All hail the Pixel, for it is glorious Orange!

Yea this looked interesting, but as much as I would love to play some magically perfect FFA system .. in the end it just isn't for me. Getting corpse camped by the pizza faced boy down the street cuz his dad was drunk that night is not my idea of fun.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

Try thinking for yourself instead of being an intellectual sheep, and what has your post actually got to do with the OP post on trials?

RE the trial It is too early to tell on how it will work, but its an innovative idea, and im  sure beta testing will drive out some changes to make it a useful addition to the game, especially in conjunction with the probable different rulesets/server types.

i would also prefer a system with a big area, where you are mostly safe. like the "empire" in EVE. there is a chance to get killed in EVEs empire, but just for people which are plain stupid or haulering very worthful goods. but they should know the risk and it is calcuable and does usually not prevent you from doing your peaceful PVE-business. well, there are war-declarations as well in empire, but thats another story.

so i would prefer, if the 2 starting continents would be mostly safe and the third and most of the following  (expansions) would be free territorial pvp in fully persistent zones. free means also not fully faction based. of course you could have /duel and arenas or even big instanced battlegrounds (even faction based) on the safe continents, for people which prefer the sports-type of pvp.

afaik, the developers are still tinkering with the pvp-mode in their beta-phases and it is not clear, at least not for NA/EU, with which model they will start.

That would kill this game faster than almost anything else. SOE hasn't recovered from it's negative rep from SWG and add in their recent issues with security and ArchAge wouldn't have a chance.

No, SOE is the LAST thing ArchAge needs to have any dealings with.

SoE WILL get over the rep NGE gave them. Don't believe me? Look at the number of people saying EA should take it over. EA was responsible for Trammel, which started the death of UO (sound familiar?) It wouldn't have been so bad, if they had left fel side alone, but they made it ugly, stripped the trees, and changed the rule set there as well.

EA got over that, and UO is still alive. LA killed SWG, not SoE. I'm sure SoE would have loved to keep it, as it is a reason to get the station pass instead of just subbing to one of their games. I'm by no means a fanboi, as NGE dumbed down crafting, which is what I play MMOs for (plus some PvP on the side). I HATE grinding, which is what NGE promoted.

I'm NOT looking forward to SWTOR. I've used Origin. If you own a Sim3 game, you are already forced to use it, as they want to compete with Steam. It's a bug-ridden disgrace of a bit of programming. It will not be able to handle the server load at all. Add in the shady practice of not telling what the sub price will be ( You DO know EA was responsible for the price hikes of subs in the first place, right? ) I'm waiting for GW2, instead.

very dramatic, but read a little more, they are talking about multiple rulesets, and sandboxes needs something to take value out of hte economy.
