"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." - Martin Luther King, Jr. |
On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best, how would you rate MMO companies if you had to rate them today? Funcom - 5 Cryptic - 3 NCSoft - 7 Mythic - 6 SOE - 3 Turbine - 7 Masthead - 5 Square Enix - 2 Perfect World - 5 Arenanet - 7 Flying Labs - 4 Blizzard - 8 CCP - 7 Blizzard gets an 8 from me -- not because I like WoW, but because they seem to know what they're doing, they're into quality, and they have a very loyal following. Anywho, I'm sure I missed a bunch of companies, but these are the ones that I could think of off the top of my head. I won't be buying anything else from Cryptic or SOE without play testing them first. Square Enix really screwed me on my one and only purchase from them (the last final fantasy game to come out). I still trust NCSoft, Turbine, and ArenaNet to do a good job with the games they put out. |

I'd totally work at Arenanet. I haven't looked at videos of other companies, but the Arenanet offices are pretty sweet. Though I'd probably get fat with the snack bar and all that. D: |

I think NCSoft and Mythic need to be 1 point lower each. Either that or bump Arenanet up to an 8 and Blizzard up to a 9. There's no comparison between those companies in my opinion. |

Funcom - 7-Enjoyed AoC-spoke with many devs and liked their advertising Cryptic - NCSoft - 9- See Arenanet, never experienced account problems, security and servers were perfect. Mythic - 6-Liked WAR more than disliked it. nice hype SOE - 3- Big let downs all around, sadly I agree with you here. Turbine - 9- Played Lotro for about 4 years, enjoyed the devs. Had constant chat in forums and in game, never felt ripped off or betrayed by them and the game is amazing! Masthead - Square Enix - 7- I believe square Enix to be the best at keeping it at least a little fresh for a long time, no matter the let downs, remember the goood experiences in the past=) Perfect World - Arenanet - 9-Played GW for about five years, best MMO experience ever and the devs did and still do constant updates, in-game events and constant updating on skills and balance, FTW Flying Labs - Blizzard - 8.5-Agree with you here, just for having such an arsenal of games and all of them of are HIGH quality, love that. CCP - Wanted to add Spellborn International-7 For innovation and creativity, followed The Chronicles of Spellborn for a long time., loved the lore, loved the ideas, liked the game. Played end-game.(would play it again) Thanks for this post btw |

Blizzard would be higher for me, but they're really gone down the past couple of years with their effort. They're aren't giving the gamer what they want, but rather they're just trying to milk every last dollar from the gamer. I really don't appreciate Blizzard right now. |

And I'd probably give CCP a 7 or 8. I'm really getting into EvE lately, but don't really have enough of a history with them to say much more :X |

I'd rate them more on customer service issues than the games. Blizzard...does not fare well. SoE--miserable service, possibly every bit as bad as Blizzard. Funcom--double billing and other major irritants. AoC opening week among the worst ever experienced. Ungood. Mythic--WH groaned and hiccuped a little during opening week, but afterwards not too painful. Turbine--AC was waaaay too long ago to leave any solid memory impression. I don't recall any server-stability or crash issues with either NCSoft or ANet, and honestly no experience with the support staff in either case--but they get a good rating for just being painless environments to play games in. Too old for this, am I. |

Definitely not a Troll, Delusional, why not? anyways I agree with Blizzard having a bad case of the 'everyones account getting owned' but it's eventually going to become a mess with that many people playing and that many people buying gold and that many people targeting other peoples' accounts! |

Since we don't have a set criteria, my ratings are based on the odd of me buying an unknown MMO based solely on the company that produced it. I would buy pretty much anything that CCP or Funcom made based on name alone. The chances decrease from there, blizzard is a solid company but im not a huge fan of their products. Given the choice between a free SOE game and a free blizzard game, i honestly don't know which i'd choose. There are a lot more SoE games that i've bought than blizzard. Blizzard - 8 Arenanet - 9
Everysingle other company - 5 or below. I hate to say it, but the majority of MMO companies are garbage and run on budgets higher than a city-hall wedding.

Originally posted by Nekkuro Sadly enough is those score the same as mine are. I would also give Bioware a 7 but that is based on earlier non MMO games they made, and they have gone down from a 9 since 2002. I have no clue how good Bioware is as a MMO company. |

I'm going to use a 1-5 scale. Funcom - 3, they have talent but are sloppy and lose their way quite a bit. They could be a 4 or 4.5 if they shaped up. We'll see. Cryptic - 3, I actually think they make good "games' but they are not patient or just understimate the time needed to do anything. Very shallow games but somewhat fun if you thijnk of them as "games". NCSoft - 4.5, I've always thougth NC was an arrogant company OR a company that was just "out of touch". From speaking to one of the head L2 gm's I pretty much got that they were "artists" and essentially just created and whatever looked good was chosen to go in. Very out of touch with the world in some ways. I was also told that early L2 used a yoda looking character and the american office had to insist that that wouldn't fly. Mythic - now or then? 3 or 4. It seems that many loved DAoC. I can only see what the game is today. I found parts of warhammer very fun but clearly it was sloppy and their idea of sieging was just another type of grind. SOE - 4 Everquest is one of the games that started it all. EQ2 really isn't a bad game at the moment. They did keep Vanguard on life support and fixed a few things instead of letting it slide into obscurity. But, they are very much Like NC and are very profit driven. I realize companies are profit driven but sometimes it feels like these companies wouldn't care if they made games or engine parts. Turbine - 4.5 I like how they are at least more in touch with players. I remember starting LOTRO and realzing that I had more contact with Turbine peeps than Lineage 2 peeps. They might not always make the best decisions but I think they are a solid company. Masthead - never played their games Square Enix - now or then? 3 or 4. Another company that seems filled with out of touch dreamers. people absolutely loved ff11 but though ff14 is very beautiful it just doesn't get there. Perfect World - 2. Their games are ok for f2p but always feel cheap to me. Arenanet - 5 at the moment they can't do any wrong because gw was such a success and their promises for gw2 are way out there and might succeed. Either that or it will really dissapoint a few people. Hard to judge a game dev when they only have 1 game out. Flying Labs - never played pirates so don't know Blizzard - 4.5 Another very profit driven company but they make very good games, whether one likes them or not. Some might say millsions of players doesn't a good game make but I could easily come back with the fact that it doesn't make the naysayers necessarilly right. All their games are usually received well enough that they have become very successful. CCP - 4.5 I like that they have taken one game and really worked on it over the years. Of course they are profit driven but they also seem very invested in their one game (soon to be more) unlike other companies where it feels like the games are commodities. They do suffer from some unprofessional press. |

I tried to come up with some numbers, but I can't. I alway's look at their games and what they deliver me. So far SOE is the only company that has brought me a MMORPG experiance the way I felt MMORPG would be minus it's bugs and lack of polish. While I enjoy(ed) many other MMO's they never satisfied my needs in what I wanted from my MMORPG experiance. Overall I can not forget the game experiances, the company's behind it comes second, in fact I don't really care much about the company but just care what they deliver. But I can understand this topic and the way some people might feel about them. Which doesn't mean I rate SOE high cause I keep saying they have made bad decissions. ------------------------------------------------------------ |

I'm not sure about the others, but ArenaNet is a 10. Customer support is world class, and well... Guild Wars is just bad ass. |

I'll throw in a few developers that haven't come up yet! Some of the smaller ones but they are generally the ones who appreciate their community more.
Three Rings - Going to have to give them a low score because they really don't communicate at all with thier player base and are just generally unhelpful when it comes to any issue or question. ---- 3 ----
Heatwave Interactive - Haven't been dealing with them for long but they really are amazing, a small developer who has time for everyone who needs it and are exceptionally helpful. Even if there game (Gods and Heroes) isn't going too well at the moment. ---- 9 ----
Neowiz - Tested and played one of thier games for quite awhile and they really are hopeless. If I'm not mistaken it's a Korean company and I began to doubt that they even spoke english with the non existant interaction with their community and lack of response to issues/questions. ---- 2 ---- Don't take life too seriously, you will never escape it alive anyway. |

The only thing that I find kinda strange is that people voted for Arenanet as they still haven't done anything in this genre apart from spreading the news and having beta as GW2 is their first MMORPG, so not to sure why people put them in their votes. Shouldn't they first need to actually have a released MMORPG to be placed in this list? ------------------------------------------------------------ |

Trion Worlds - 9.5 (would have been a 10 but that first world event was far from perfect...communication with playerbase is second to none right now) Blizzard Entertainment - 7.5 (dropped a bit lately, especially after that whole Real ID fiasco and the recent disconnect with their players) CCP - 7 (They're not quite as in-touch with their playerbase as first assumed) Turbine - 7 (It's a shame their games couldn't make a go of it in the p2p market) NCSoft - 6 (Would be higher if they were more committed to saving struggling games instead of murdering them...and Aion STILL has rubberbanding!!!) Nexon - 8 (Yeah, kiddie games mostly but they make some quality games without the 'ick' factor that alot of f2p companies have). gPotato - 4 (based on personal experience...lost cash shop item due to bug in game, refused to credit me. Buggy games...bad cash shop policies)
