Huh? I know this don't make any sense to you but....

I'm  just curious what other mmorpgs old school AO players liked after they got tired of AO

This is just for people who where into AO before the Lost Eden Expansion or liked the game a lot less after LE and found something else to play that was more fun.

I left AO shortly after SL hit. I was a GA4 fixer, and Sl was a poison pill to my class, and my 900million credit build.

Went to SWG for a few years, since it had depth and complexity like I was used to. but these days??? Good luck.

The best you'll find is Fallen Earth.....which is a bit like AO + SWG + Fallout with 1/8 of the content.

There will, sadly, never be anything like old-school AO.

yeah i was playing swg until nge, and matrix off and on till it shutdown.

And i heard fallen earth got shut down and that the company making apb reloaded was making fallen earth reloaded.

Yeah Sl changed a lot but i think it was still he same game, some people juts didn't give sl a chance because it was too big of a change for them and like you said it hurt your class, but it only hurt the fixers at certain level ranges, endgame in sl every class felt overpowered even with crap gear except trader and i assume nt.

Nah, FE is still going strong. It will be going F2P in a few months, but it's more like AO's fr00b system than anything else. you will still be able to sub normally and not really even notice the differance.

I beta tested MxO, and played for a bit, until they killed Morpheus. Game had potential. what a waste.

Was in AO on day one, during all the fun, got my Pioneer's backpack still, hehe.

I might miss something but listing the games I played for any length of time and/or endgame would be, uhh SWG(pre-nge), DaoC, Warhammer Online, Eve Online, Fallen Earth...  Probably missed quite a few but those are the games that immediately come to mind that I spent some time in playing.

i think i beta tested Fallen Earth but didn't give it to much of a chance ( i been in to many betas since 2004 to be sure) i remember fighting snakes or something early on and uninstalling the game i don't remember what the problem was. Maybe i'll give that another go someday soon.

Edit: AO made me care or appreciate about Leveling with a groups but when you watch a video review or read a review they seem to almost never talk about team content just questing and solo stuff . And beta testing a game or trying a game at low level you never get to experience team content early on. I almost never make it to the point in mmorpg's where grouping or doing dungeons becomes more conman and people quest less.

Im curious about Fallen Earth now but i don't want to get into another game where they expect me to be playing solo all the time, i could just play my wii or play a single player game if that what i wanted.

Edit 2: i got nothing else to play so i think i'll just try Fallen earth again and give it more of a chance, you're not the first people to mention Fallen earth, my roommate who started Ao with me years ago actually played Fallen earth off and on and liked it.

Sadly, most games these days don't really focus on group content the way AO did. It's all solo quest to "end game" stuff.

People today can't be bothered to actually find a group and go do some stuff....it's too much of a hassle for them and their ADD.

I never...ever thought I would say this but:

I miss BS missions

Lol yeah and recently they made it so you can just buy tokens with cash so no need to even do BS misisons anymore.

I have been bitter  the past year or two when it comes to mmorpgs,so i don't even put in much effort into new games that come out, i know there is alot of hype about the next starwars but i ignore it because when i think of starwars now i think of NGE. But hopefully the starwars mmo they are working on isn't just a big solo questing grind or pvp grind game like everything else.

By the looks, it will just be KOTOR with multiplayer, with a MMORPG interface.

Which is cool by me, I'll play it, and probably have a lot of fun.

But it will never take the place of old AO, or old SWG.

I remeber the BS grind, copying keys and handing them out to the whole team. If they would have kept to the original idea behind SL, of letting you choose a side there despite being Clan or Omni think might have been a tad better.

After it went onto DAOC then Guild Wars and finally to WoW. Now after being burnt out on fantasy and trying to find a good scifi MMO and having no luck at all. AO takes too much credit investment to keep current with gear, weapons and implants for me to play it. Really dont feel like level locking myself at level ten just to grind pillows and other buff items for sale.

The problem with SL was that it was not RK.

Let me explain....

No grid. Nothing that functioned LIKE the grid.

Entirely new stims and nanos. Half of RKs nanos don't even work over there.

For some odd reason, Yalms don't work.

It was just too much like they took a completely different game (which SL was originally supposed to have been, from what I remember) and just plopped it down onto an existing one.

And for a Fixer, it was a nightmare. NONE of my abilities or nanos worked, and suddenly I was forced to run everywhere.

Hard pill to swallow for someone who's used to being able to grid to just about anywhere in the world and move faster than the game could draw in the scenery.

They nerfed me down to a weak soldier with pathetic HoTs. Worthless to a SL group, and beyond gimped.

I probably would have never left AO if not for SL. I'm sure it probably could have been done right, but it was so poorly designed, and half finished.....and IMO it's never a good idea to completely invalidate your base game with an expansion.

I moved on from AO in January and have gotten hooked on Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. The game is huge fun, very challenging with an awesome community the likes of which I have not seen on any MMO in quite some time. I'm really enjoying myself so far and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon.

AO, as far as I am concerned, is done, finished. I've quit and come back numerous times over the past seven years and each time I returned, I found a game that was in worse shape than before (regardeless of what FC had added or "fixed" while I was away.) That trend shows every indication of continuing until the servers are finally shut down for good.

yeah, and i think i tried vanguard last year or the year before and it was dead, i think it was maybe a few months before they closed down mxo i sued to play mxo and just get the station deal where you can play all the games for 30$,

so i used to play mxo and check out the new changes in swg since nge made me stop playing. Im not sure how i got vanguard on my account but i remember trying it probably a few times first time there was people but i got bored fast and the last time i got bored quit but didnt even see anyone the short time i played.

I remember there was alot of hype for vanguard though and i tried it when it came out, i don't remember buying it though so i wonder i it was trials every time i tried it. I kind of got the impression it was like eq2 though.

I been trying to play single player games past few days, like fallout Vegas, but i have the same problem with Vegas i had with fallout 3 and every other single player game..... i can't control myself i always end up activating cheats starts with something small and next thing you know i got god mode on and unlimited ammo etc. then im bored. but im kinda a little bored or annoyed when i decide to use some cheats anyway so idk.

Some how all other MMOs after AO are so "lacking"... And now AO is quite clearly dying and FC even if they do have good communication they don't get stuff done...

Not sure where I should head next, or just give up with MMOs...

So very true. I've tried a handful of other MMOs over the years, but nothing comes close to AO. I'm currently back playing AO and my plan is to do so until The Secret World starts the open beta phase. The 10th anniversary brought some life back to the game, but I do agree with above statements that AO is dying, which is such a shame. A small light at the end of the tunnel is the sneak peek video of the new engine shown in Montreal the other day. It will be very interesting to see how big impact it will have on the population when released (if ever).

Yeah, SL changed everything.  SL and AoC both tried to do something they should have avoided.  Take a niche game and small company and push it toward fantasy.  A place FUncom couldn't hope to compete.   I look back at AO.  I think of how I loved the complexity of character building.  Then I think of what FUncom did to that game.  I got my 10yr anniversary invite.  Not playing.  I paid them for longer than I should have the first time around.   I even considered logging in for the free time just to see old friends.   Even that would just make me have to say goodbye again.  No thanks.

The current staff has the desire and the drive, but they do not have the resources.  Think about  how long the engine upgrade and profession balances have been being worked on.  Once they are in, how will change and updates come?  Unless FUncom actually puts some resources and manpower into it, it all seems like a waste to me.  They've left what is left of their really loyal customers to drag on in a dying game.  Waiting on promises and hopes.  I hate to be this way, but FUncom left us out in the cold.  I honestly feel sorry for the people left working on it.  Reading about the things they are trying to do and how they seem to genuinely care.  I feel sorry for them because they don't get the backup they deserve from FUncom.

Personally, I don't think AO is fixable at this point.  Even if they started fresh with an AO2 that basically skipped SL and continued on after AI and LE, I wouldn't buy it.  I know what FUncom is.  I know how they treat customers.  How they treated me.  I don't like being lied too.  I don't like being insulted by Devs that can't even copy/paste code to make new items and not forget a profession tag change.  And, he didn't even test it first.  I don't like being drug along waiting for features I already paid for.(AI)  I don't like playing expansion content only to get hit by a virtual wall because they released it before it was finished.(Pande)  Lastly, I'll just leave you with a slogan that was popular when I quit AO.  One that I still remember and think of every time I think of FUncom.  FUncom:  We put the F U in FUN.

Realised that I never really said anything that pertains to the OP.  I've played a lot of different MMOs.  I played some before AO and more after.  I even played WoW for a long time.  I'm currently playing and paying 0 MMOs.  I'm waiting for the mmo market...  I've said what I had to say.  I've joined in game protests.  I've emailed every level of management.  Nothing matters but the $.  So, I'm doing the only thing I can now.  I don't pay them.  Sadly, I'm in the minority.  So, I'm not sure I'll ever play/pay another MMO again.  Which, really is depressing.  And no, I would not play the games of some companies even if they offered me a free lifetime subscription.  Conviction is not something to waiver on.

Fully agree with you Wharghoul and Paro. SL to me was sort of a fantasy with a 'steampunk' twist on it. Which in essence was fine in theory if they had not gone and nuked everything that you gained from RK. Then forcing you into a tunnel with their quest hubs and whatnot. It was a reversal what they had done before. Plus add in the having to wear shades, boots, or rings for certain zones urgh..was yucky. I could accept yalms not working or certain abilities, but yes fixers got hit hard, very hard with SL. As I played an adventurer was only minimally affected nano wise.
