Recently I returned to EQ2, the game has high potential to be fun, this isn’t a rant but rather constructive changes that would definitely have me come back.
Took a three year break from mmorpgs, played them since 2003. Jumped on my SK with 32 days played and took him from 80 to 90.
Perhaps it’s been my time away, or maybe what I want out of a game has changed. One things for sure out of all the PVP games, I’ve never had it so rough on ganking. Not sure if there is a way to look it up, but I bet you in a single day of play (5 hours) the average is about 20 deaths or so. Bit much. After while I learned my lesson and entirely skipped questing all to gather, I found if you tried those areas were more contested, but if you hid in a cave or bushes you could get a lot more out of it before discovered.
I should note PVP wasn’t what it once was. Some class openers take me down from 100% to 10% in a single click, pretty amazing. From there provided you’re not dead before you could active some survivability timers, I’m too weak at this moment to make a dent in that time, currently still using the Shard gear from TSO and a few instance drops.
Once I hit 90, due to my time away I needed to get my AA up had 180AA. I found mentoring down to do dungeons the most efficient, I’m sure there are better ways, but this was the best way I found so far.
Wouldn’t get much done here either, each and every time there would always be a group or two in there that would kill me, meanwhile only thing I can do is run, not being able to fight back due to mentor rules. Sometimes I could get away, other times I couldn’t. Pretty counterproductive on getting something done.
I decided I like the game but the PVP here just isn’t what I’m looking for so I decided to give a PVE server a try, the first PVE server I’ve ever played on since the game FFXI, I’ve always played pvp.
Only play Tanks or healer classes, felt it would help to try something new so I did my research, wanted to play a necro but ultimately I just want to group so I felt it wouldn’t be the greatest choice and rolled a warlock, always thought rift spell looked cool.
Reached 20 and farmed about 30AA’s locked and tried soloing WC, FG, Storm hold, couldn’t do it. Spammed LFG for about 2 hours, no answers. While in these places attempting to down a named mob I would occasionally see a 4 man group, would ask politely if I could join, none of them replied, ever. That’s when I went back to try to grind some AA on the SK, one pull and a group of players was on top of me, unable to fight back because of being mentored and died. Took a break to reevaluate what changes to make next.
Given up on the PVP server. PVE The content I want to see is not an option because no one seems to group at lower levels I’ll just have to do what I have to do and roll a necro.
The necro leveling was pretty awesome; I had the 100% server bonus (from weekend), 20% vet bonus, 110% potion bonus, 200% Vit bonus. All these stacked up I reached and locked at 20 and obtained 44 AA points.
Class is much better at soloing by far, lot of tools for solo. But I admit I was a bit bored with it. Tried running WC and the whole zone was free of mobs, another 4 man group in here. I asked if I could join, 2 members said no, one didn’t reply, the other said roll something useful and I’ll think about it.
Group had all the mobs on farm so I couldn’t give it a try to see if it worked. This point all the experiences as a whole sealed the deal. I can say I really did give it a fair try; I rolled with all the punches and made lots of changes to try to keep going with it.
If there was active grouping through the leveling process of the game, I could really get in to it. That’s pretty much all I wanted to get out of the game is just group and maybe some raid content. As it stands now, until you farm 90 levels, 250+ aa’s and some gear. You don’t get to find out if you enjoy your class until you hit 90 to play the game for the first time.
As for PVP, well that’s the nature of it and I understand that and don’t really have the right to complain about it. Just like to note compared to the past, and other games I’ve never seen ganking this bad. Or for that matter the power seasoned players have over fresh level cap players, hard to entice you to keep with it being 2 shot while wearing plate. Then the free kill risk free mentoring system.
In closing if you could group while leveling for quests and instances I could definitely see myself coming back and enjoying it.

As for any game, its always more fun and interesting to play with other people. I started playing EQ2 for the first time last week and kind of sad that the servers keep going down. This is the third time during my entire experience it has gone down. I do not blame SOE, the whole fiasco with the security breach would cause anyone to go willy-nilly. This game is solo friendly to an extent and grouping is definitely one of the highlights of this game. I did not start on a PvP server, so I have no idea how the ganking is. If it is as bad as you described you, then I'll take your word on it. PvP does not sound like something I would enjoy (especially playing for the first time) unless I knew people on that server. I had my fair share of WoW-PVP servers, that was fun until all the classes became identical.

I never had much problems forming groups for low to mid level dungeons in EQ2 whenever I last played, though it has been two years since I last leveled a toon. Of course, SOE seems to have deemphasized dungeon runs for XP with Rise of Kunark, hence you won't get many groups for dungeons there, yet I don't know that much about the last two expansions. |

Ah at level 80 on the pvp the level 88's will be killing you which would of sucked with all thier gear and +8 levels.Antonia Bayle is a good PvE server with loads of recruiting guilds that will group at all levels with you, also i see lots of people asking for groups below level 90. Necromancers are nice solo classes and do really good dps in raids at 90.I recomend spending your 1st 21 aa in tainted heals (necromancer tree)then get max points in perceptors command(summoner tree).this way you don't need groups and can solo heroic content np:). If it ever comes back online ofc..... |

Come to Naggy, Join Undead Lords, I along with some of the others in guild have toon ADD and roll toons in all tiers, we are also starting to build a x2 raid force for light raiding and pq's. We need Necro, chain/plate healer, and maybe some brawler dps. Look for Godof when servers come back up, off work for another 3 weeks or more, so i'll be online alot. |

The problem is that the game have so many levels now and soloing is as fast as grouping. There is no use to run low level dungeons for gear, even the best you find is useless after just a few hours gameplay since you leveled past it, and since you level as fast by soloquesting few players bothers with groups, only some guilds run many of the dungeons, no PUGs. The problem here is that the game have twice as many levels as intended, it just raised the bar too many times. The only reason to fix it would be by revamping it to fewer levels again but that would mean that you would have to revamp and rebalance all classes, and fix all gear as well and it is a gigantic project. Sadly enough is a MMO just good for a certain number of expansions, EQ2 peak at EoF. The whole problem is the levelsystem and the fact that they raise it so often. This is the reason EQ were dropping in players before Wow even was released and it is something most MMOs suffer eventually. Either you have to do like GW and never raise the max level or make a new system to get rid of the problem. No dungeon finder or similar is enough. Older players still enjoy the endgame but few new players get into the game because of this, and many older players never bother to level alts or get their frinds to power level them. |
