Just an update on Reformation Linkshell for those who might be considering joining us.

We have a new website that can be found at http://www.reformationls.tk

We have forums as well, and a direct link to those can be found at http://www.reformationlinkshell.tk

A description of what we are about can be found on the first page of this thread and on our website.

I don't know what the exact numbers are but I know will soon have a pretty big roster of players, after the merge is complete with new people joining every day.

We have a vent server, although its not required and I myself don't even login to it that often.

These are some of the nicest people I've ever met. and the linkshell so far has been working as intended. We have people of all jobs/levels and newbies and vets alike.

If you're thinking about restarting or joining in on ffxi soon you'll want to watch this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9plSuH3fqA&NR=1

One, that's a good price for a well made game + 4 expansions + 3 mini enxpansions + other new stuff and raised level cap

Two, that hat, the "Destrier Beret", will make leveling from 1-30 that much easier then it already is for newcomers.

Just know if you are considering buying this game that there is an issue if your credit or debit card does not support secure code then you can not even set up your account to play so be warned and make sure you have the secure code option from your insitution that you got your card from.   This is something they implemented about a month ago a very encrypted system.  Safe I am sure but a lot of pain especially if you institution is not signed up for hte secure code.

Wow, I wish I had seen this thread when it was just getting started.  I played at release for a while and had a NIN/THF, but never reached the level cap back in the day.  It was just so difficult to group and you couldn't solo anything at all.  I've been looking at the new changes but didn't feel like starting over on my own.

I've got some time to kill over the next few months it looks like, so count me in.  I'm downloading now.  Should be in tomorrow.

Since both Titan and Phoenix are locked, I'm currently playing on Asura.  If anyone else starts up and wants to join me, feel free to get in touch with me.  My character's name is Fensir.

If I stick around long enough to get a character move, I might move him over if Asura proves to be lacking.  Or maybe I'll just reroll if they unlock the server in a couple days after the merger.  Who knows.

If you were ever going to try out ffxi now would be the time

The introduction of abyssea has done a lot to remove the barrier between elite players and the casual's / noobs

The game is a lot easier to get things done than ever before and doesn't require a massive investment of time like it has in the past to get that one piece of gear.

Gone are the days of trying for that one piece of armor for 6 months to a year or spending 2 years upgrading for the best weapon in the game.

The casual aspects of the game are very appealing and leveling is retarded fast these days.. you can get a max level character in a couple days now instead of months to a year depending on how many hours a day you could play.

that being said.. the endgame challenges and hardcore raids are absent from the game.. everything can be done with 6 people or less... most of the game content can be done in a duo.

There is an unbelieveable amount of storlyine to play and quests to do so there is plenty to keep you occupied for a long long time.

Old players may not like the changes but the game was really stagnating and needed a shakeup. I've seen more new players in the game than i have at any time in the past 3 years.

It appears SE plans to release new raiding zones in the future too.. so now would be the perfect time to jump into the game for a new person.

ffxi has a larger share of elitist than any other mmo i've ever played.. but atm elitism would be retarded because of the relative ease of the game.. and most of those people have stopped playing.

Plenty of time to learn the ropes of the game before (hopefully) real challenges are re-introduced to the game.

Just an update for anyone who was considering joining us.

We've all been having alot of fun in game. We ran an old school Garrison run, Wednesday night..

Here's a few photos from that.

We are still accepting members, and probably always will be. We have people of all levels. Just last night, we had several XP parties going, key hunting, and mission groups.

check out www.reformationls.tk for more info.

You know... I never even got to do a Garrison in all my time playing XI - ~7 years since its US launch day on PC. Could never get enough people interested.

The more I learn about your LS - and that you're into playing the game as it was intended, doing content that's considered "obsolete" by many other old-school players, and not "rushing to level cap" (music to my eyes)... I'm honestly considering re-upping my account.

I'd want to transfer over my existing character, though, if that's okay. I've got several low level/un-leveled jobs yet and with level synch, I could even synch down on my higher level ones if need be. More-so, however, there are years worth of "emotional connections" (epic encounters, major milestones, etc) built up in that Mithra. It would feel really 'weird' leaving that behind and starting from scratch again. Here's a gallery of just a relatively small handful of some moments I've captured... for those interested in checking it out. Warning: There may be some spoilers in there for newer players who haven't been through all the storylines yet.

I'm very much into helping others out and, unlike many I've met in my time playing, don't mind going through content I've finished multiple times if it's to help someone else complete it as well. Actually I enjoy it. That's part of the fun of FFXI to me... helping others achieve their goals. It's all part of the experience.

Of course, I say that with the stipulation that I at least be asked ahead of time and not be expected to drop everything on a moment's notice (though I'd even be okay with that at times, if circumstances allow). I've made the mistake of letting some of the "wrong people" know that I like helping out in the past. They interpreted it as "Oh, Shan is volunteering to be my personal slave..." and started demanding I help them with every other thing they wanted to do. That didn't go over too well, obviously lol.

Question for ya Ray... Are you guys going to try and level up in groups, fighting ideal level mobs up to cap? Or are you going to be doing the routine where you're level 70, leveling up in Qufim Island capped down to 22? I really, really really hope it's the former and you're moving through the content, instead of sync'ing in the same low level spots for the "easiest leveling". Would one in your LS expect to be able to go out to the jungles at around 25 and level up there, like in the earlier days of the game?

And, in a more general sense, is there any kind of power-leveling going on, where you have an out-of-party healer or tank keeping everyone alive, or holding all the aggro, so all the party has to do is play a game of whack-a-mole with the mobs? Again, I'm hoping not, because that's another example of lame player-made decisions that killed the game for me.

I just want to know, I guess, to what degree the LS's idea of "playing it in the classic fashion" and mine "line up" :).

If it looks like a good match and y'all are actually playign the game the way I've missed playing it for years, then I might just request to join y'all.

Raystantz, I've read through this thread and most of it I don't understand as I've never played FFXI before and know nothing about the game. But based on your first post and your description of why you play MMO's and what keeps you in particular ones (the people) you sold me on trying this game. I've played every major MMO out there (most from beta) from casual to endgame and I agree with you, the people are what make the game not the promise of epic loots.

With that said, what's the best way for a duo (wife & I) to get started in FFXI? Just download the client and start playing? Is getting it from Steam the best option? You say you're on Phoenix server? I hesitate to ask to join up with you guys right away as I feel I'd be rushed into learning the game when this time around I really want the newness and noob feeling to last as long as posible (I'm so over power gaming, I'm an explorer more than an achiever). But is this game hard to learn for the completely new player? Is it vastly different from typical US mmo's? Like the movement, is it the dreaded point and click or are there wasd controls?

Anyhow, I appreciate you reading my babble and here's to hoping that FFXI can fill our need for a social, engaing game.

Thanks in advance!

I'll try to answer some things.

Having someone you know to play with is a huge asset in FFXI so that's good. Two partners can go very far.

There are tons of areas to explore for sure. FFXI has a lot of common MMO elements, but it definately does things in its own way a lot of the time. You don't need to worry about losing the 'noob' feeling fast, FFXI basics are reasonably easy to understand but as they say but the learning curve is pretty huge when it comes to mastery and endgame systems.

Configuring and setting up your FFXI has a big impact on how enjoyable it is to play. Setting the resolution high, and going into the in game configuration will help immensely. In game press the number keypad - button twice to open the main menu, go to "config", then "misc. 2" options, and select "keyboard type". Selecting either "full-size" or "compact" keyboard will change how the key layout is setup. I like compact setup for the familiar WASD movement and camera controls on arrow keys.

Yep, just download and start playing. If you've never played before.. its going to be a bit overwhelming at first. The controls are alot different than what you may be used to, but I recommened playing with a game pad unless your just accustomed to keyboard use.

Steam is a great option for getting the game.. its how I did it this last time.

No reason not to join up with us now.. we have people at all ranges from complete newbs to seasoned vets. Noone is rushing, and everyone is happy to help with content they've already done themselves because its fun to do. That and you'll have plenty of instant resources should you have questions about anything and if your brand new.. you will def. have questions. I still do, and I've been playing for years.

Its got a steep learning curve, but once you get it.. you've got it. You can set up WASD controls and we can show you how. There is no click to move. Not that I am aware. We are having a great time in game, and would love to have you guys and your free to progress as you wish.

I think I can answer this in a short reply.

- we don't have any "restrictions" on how you level, but most everybody "wants" to progress just like you did back in the golden age.. where you were leveling in zones appropriate for your characters level. Now, I have still had parties in say the dunes.. when I was mid 20s, but I try to exaust all other options before I do so. I use level sync as a means to level when there's no other option.. like for example.. I'm 27 right now and while I could sit in Qufim til 75.. I got my kazham keys and I'm planning on partying next in the jungles.. and so on.. to altepa.. crawlers nest.. etc. Most everybody plays with that same frame of mind.

- I don't condone power leveing, and as far as I know none of the LS groups we've had.. had such. Like I said, we are here to play the OLD way. Every group I've been in has been a 6 man mob killing machine, without the need for any outside help.

- Bottom line is, we don't rush to level. We experience the content at our own pace, and we help others experience it that might not be leveling as fast as someone else. None of us has issue going back and doing content our characters have already done for the sake of helping someone else. At any given time there is all sorts of stuff going on. Just the other night, I was doing kazham keys, there were a few people doing the 2-3 dragon, and several parties going in different places, etc.

Awesome. You are definitely speaking my language heheh.

So... as long as playing on an already developed character isn't a problem, I think I may well reactivate and bring my character over to your server...

That is assuming they're allowing transfers to your server now?

Have some real life stuff to deal with in the coming week or so... But then I'll go ahead and contact you as soon as I'm back in game and transferred.

Seems FFXI may have some life left in it for me after all heheh.

probably referring to the verified by visa nonsense.

Its an annoying feature that does hinder some people from being able to play.
