First, I heard Blizzard lost over half it’s subscriber base bringing it somewhere in the 5.5 range. Then, with Cata, I have many friends stating that their tired of the same old grind and have either canceled their subscriptions or are in the process of it. Now if all this wasn’t unsettling enough, we have entire guilds that have pre-ordered Rift.
Does anyone know if Blizzard did in fact loss a good portion of their subs? Anyone know if future WoW expansions will be anything else than level some more? Any info helpful.

Originally posted by mastersomrat it might be true that many people cancelled WoW sub, but thats very different than blizz losing half subscriptions lol which i highly doubt.... many WoW players preordered Rift but how many already cancelled the preorder? aaaah thats another question with a "many" as an answer..... WoW is still as strong as ever, subscription rate go up and down like any other mmorpg ever since people sub, cancel, resub, and so on. :) i personally canceled my WoW sub recently cos i need a new job, i preordered Rift and will play the free month and maybe 1 more month (not sure), cos im still planning to resub WoW when i stabilize my income |

Well, they lost half their subs a while back when wow was banned in china or w/e, got them back when it was brought back. But I really do believe wow's reign is coming to an end this time....like for realz. I don't think Rift will kill it, but I simply think with all the new mmo's coming out, alot of them big names and some of them next-gen(well hopefully), WoW is simply goingto be beaten down bit by bit. I think it will definitely still be a mmo contender , a few millions subs, not what is has now. Couple that with the fact that cata pissed off alot of people who were wotlk casuals, and that class balance right now is just embarassing, and that for whatever reason they made cata really grindy, I think it really will get knocked down a knotch or two in the next two years with the release of rift, tera, gw2, and tor. I hear it in wow chat, ppl starting to talk about rift or tor, and i have a feeling once the buzz picks up for these games with ads and currently disgruntled wow players, it will go together like jam and butter. I could be wrong, but I dont really care, at this point im just waiting for those 4 mmos+archage online. |

In all honesty think about this. Blizzard claims to have 12 million active subs? Yet they talk about the record 4.4 million sold copies of cataclysm? What about the 7.6 million other "active" subs? Clearly by blizzards own admission in a round about way they have not bought cataclysm? Somethings not right there. Not trolling just looking at hard facts as far as numbers blizzard themselves put out. |

I think WoW will start to lose quite some players during this year with all the shiny new mmo's coming out. This is just the first phase with Rift on it's way. We still have a few shots with TERA bringing innovative combat and 2 big names Guild Wars 2 and SWTOR. |

Originally posted by gorro187 Exactly but some will bring up the fact that Blizzard has yet to release in China which is true but their model is way different than ours and because Blizzard's definition of subscribers it allows them (well atleastt hey think it does) to include them as subscribers. WoW is not falling apart yet but between TOR, GW2 and Blizzard's new mmo it is all but done. It had it's days in the sun and I'm sure it will have a few more good moments but it just is time for something new. |

It's amusing because even if they lost half of their subscriber base - which they won't - they'd still be larger than the next top AAA titles combined.
If there's one game out there whos longevity I'm not worried about, it's World of Warcraft. Criminy, people, Everquest 1 is still around and kicking.
And... um, if you've actually played Rift or any of these "new" MMOs I don't think you'd be too worried that they're going to "steal" players from WoW anytime soon. I played the Rift beta and was uninspired to say the least. |

Originally posted by gorro187 i always believed that game companies include non active subscriptions among the active ones when giving a subscription rate to the public so it looks more than it actually is actively playing.... but yeah blizz has many millions of subs, cata sold like 3.5 millions in 1 day, it went up to 4.4 i thin as of now.... i know a lot of ppl that plays wow and dont have cataclysm (planning to get it ) one of my ex guild mates even had only the up to the burning crusade coz didnt have the money to buy the Xpacs along with the subscription..... many ppl are in those shoes as well, im pretty sure about that.... and that doesnt mean the wouldnt get cata so..... they might / might not get it |

I use to play on Area 52.. awesome Horde server.... But yah idk, there is always 2 sides to every story. I just got off the phone with a friend of mine I haven't talked with in a while, and he wants to come and try WoW out, he played it once before but not much, so wer are gonna play together a bit later. People are always leaving, but people are always coming in as well it seems. I will play Rift at lauch but I will probably still play WoW also. |

Another 'the sky is falling on WoW!' topic number 9999123 just before another similar game is released.
*yawn* Wonder why there seems to be more haters on the internet? Read this by an actual marketing guy to find out why. |

Originally posted by jpnz I know, right? I remember WoW was going to die off (on the MMORPG.COM forums, at least) with Warhammer Online... with Aion... now with Rift (which is a total laugh) - I think that the Mayan Apocalypse happening and destroying the world in 2012 is about the most likely event to dethrone WoW... until Blizzard comes out with their next MMO. (And even then I have a strong feeling WoW's gonna be around for at least a decade after that, if not longer.) The people who are bitter/burnt out/angry at WoW desperately WANT another MMO to come along that will substantially decrease its subscriber base, but it just isn't going to happen. |

Originally posted by Justarius1 I'm not even too convinced the 2012 events will end this behemoth, lol No but seriously it does seem like a trend that posts like this show up close to competing MMOs launching. I myself play WoW and will be getting Rift at launch, however I will stay subbed to WoW. I don't see this game going anywhere anytime soon. We know that even if people do leave to go on their ways in Telara or where ever, soon as we here a new content patch is rolling around, most people will migrate right back. |

Originally posted by XiThRyL Hmmm, I don't know. Of course, you're right in that WoW isn't going anywhere. But I'd be surprised if all the upcoming MMO's didn't cause a drop off in sub numbers in WoW for at least the 2011 period. Even if it'd be for each new MMO 3-6 months, then that would mean the majority of months that a lot of MMO gamers will play at least 1 of these new MMO's, and a considerable part of that number that will cancel their current sub for that time period, whether that'll be WoW, Aion, etc. The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's |
