hmm, not sure how it did that, unless where I uploaded it compressed it automatically.. Sorry, that was just a screenshot from the 1080p video of the warrior class. Either way, I think it looks awesome :P Can't wait to get that flaming sword.. :P

 There is no doubt that Rift graphics are better than WoW graphics.  That said, for a brand new MMO, Rift graphics are surprisingly average in my opinion.  In the screenshoots above you see nice art-work, but fairly low detail on the character models and the environment.  That low detail makes  very high framerates pretty easy for a middle of the road PC, but I'm kinda of a graphics junkie where I love high end graphics.  So for me, I am disappointed coming from a 4 year old game like Vanguard and seeing lower quality graphics in Rift.

I too am very dissapointed with the graphics in Rift.  Especially the charater graphics which are washed out and make it difficult to distinguish the toon from the backround.  Also the game seems a bit choppy and hard to follow visually.  I have a brand new pretty good comp so it's not the settings.

I was not impressed with the boring WoW/EQII clone mechanics and mob difficulty.  No strategy involved solo other than mash the button faster.

I enjoyed the class depth other than that this was a waste of time.

I left WoW to look for something a bit different.  This game is just a bit too much like WoW.  I guess I'll be playing EQI for something different until someone can come up with something that is not a WoW clone.

There's only one real problem with the graphics at this point, and that's the fact that their FSAA algorithm is a little off.  What this means, in a nut shell, Every visual in the game gets sampled 2-4 times, every time.  It's like you going to an all you can eat buffet and having 4 of everything at the same time.  Even people like me running cutting edge enthusiast systems, can't run the game with 4x Super (Smooth Edges works fine, but as soon as you hit multiple SS you can see something isn't quite right)  Sampling enabled. (and I'm running 2x GTX580 hydros) This is a known problem, and is being looked at by developers.  Even without the SS enabled, if you've got your antiliasing stepped up the game looks beautiful.

 

That issue aside, even without SS at 4x the game still looks great.  I do agree with some people that some of the character animations are a bit on the dull side, but that too is being looked at by the developers.

I'm also under the impression that people using mobile GPU/CPUs are having issues, of which, are also being sorted by developers, as well as VGA manufacturers (driver end).

 

In the past, most MMO's were/are both CPU and GPU intensive depending on where you had your sliders at in video settings.

RIFT is of a newer breed where 90% of the graphics abilities of the engine are GPU extensive.  I, personally, wouldn't expect the best you can get, eye-candy wise, in this game unless you're running an Nvidia 400 series card (or ATI equivelant) or better.  We're moving into a "new age" for graphics engines where the majority of the processing is going to be done on the GPU itself, and everything previous to the 200 series just won't perform well, if at all.

 

Some suggestions on video settings for people who simply can't upgrade right now:

Turn OFF:  Fullscreen FX, Shadows, Super Sampling.

Keep your sliders on the low side for partical density, ground density, and view distances (all applicable sliders).

Still looks like dung to me. And no I'm not using a crap GPU (nor an expensive one, there aren't any pc games worth a crap to justify a $300+ card)

Long as shadows are off I'd probably still get playable framerates in a mass pvp.

Anyways, Rift is terrible, WoW is terrible, and Rift is a WoW clone. Ironically, they took everything I hate from WoW. And faction pvp = instant fail.

Lineage 2 > terrible, ugly P2W games like PW > Rift > RF > WoW

1)  Rift, every single setting maxed.

2) Vanguard, custom settings with a lot of stuff turned down to maintain high FPS.

 

Even though the Vanguard screenshot is 3 years old or so, both screens were taken on the exact same computer as I haven't upgraded since I started playing Vanguard a few years ago.  Although I think Rift graphics have a nice style, the detail in Vanguard is many fold higher.

The funny thing about those screenshots, even without looking at the lush screenshots in the thread is that the first thing I noticed in the Vanguard screenshots were the trees.  The trees are horrible.  They remind me of the trees in WoW.  I hate the faked 3D trees like that.  It is one of the things that I thought was awesome about RIFT from the start - the trees.

I do not care what kind of skyboxes Vanguard may have - with those atrocious trees, forget it.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

With more than 3 players on the screen Vanguard became a slide show... If you want a game to be massive you need graphics that can support that. Performance is inportant. MMO:s should not have the latest graphics...It´s not a good idea.

Graphics should be able to handle 50+ people on the sceen. And with computers that he average MMO-fan will use...

So, IMO, there is no reason to complain. I love nice graphics...but the game and being able to have fun with a lot of athor players is much more important.

It either wasn't at max graphics or was taken before shadows were implemented.. if there was a time where shadows weren't in the game. There are no shadows present in your image was my first tell :P

Either way, something stinks here.

The terrain of choice is also somewhere that you, as a player, aren't supposed to enter. My wife managed to get in once though :P

.. But in a good way.

It either wasn't at max graphics or was taken before shadows were implemented.. if there was a time where shadows weren't in the game. There are no shadows present in your image was my first tell :P

Either way, something stinks here.

The terrain of choice is also somewhere that you, as a player, aren't supposed to enter. My wife managed to get in once though :P

The screenshot is about 3 weeks old.  So I don't know if that is 'pre-shadow' or not.  As far as the terrain, it is simply looking off the balcony of the structure where the Guardians start their journey.  It's right in front of every new player when they start, not some terrain that should be inaccessible to players.... your implication is laughable.

When you spawn as a new Guardian you are facing your first quest giver. In your screenshot, that is right behind you on the minimap. The terrain you are taking a screenshot of is, infact, inaccessible to players.

The only thing I'm "implying" is that you are terrible at taking screenshots and most likely don't have graphics maxed like you claimed.

.. But in a good way.

Even though the Vanguard screenshot is 3 years old or so, both screens were taken on the exact same computer as I haven't upgraded since I started playing Vanguard a few years ago.  Although I think Rift graphics have a nice style, the detail in Vanguard is many fold higher.

No one can compete with Vanguard and won't be able to for a long time. They had such good artist oO.

Such a shame the game had bugs, it was so good.

 

 

Rift is more detailed than WoW, less detailed than Aion or ArcheAge / Tera / GW2.

They are somewhere around EQ2.

It also turns out I play on a recommended system, almost (NVIDIA 250, 3.25 gb of ram, 3ghz dual core) and yet I still need to run low settings =( but even on the low settings, the graphics are far beyond older mmo's. On higher settings, which I have turned my system up to, the visuals are beautiful. Sure other games have done better, but other games have done worse, and older games are obviously worse.

Can't hate on this game for its graphics. You can dislike a work and still respect the quality of the work. I hate very much on the "clone of WoW" premise, but still, it's not like they got to copy any single function from wow's codebase, they rewrote it all. I may view it as a clone but I view it as a very well done clone.

Lastly, some of the lowbie gear is just beautiful, the thing that remains to be seen for those of you that play is this: Will these skins be recycled like many other games (including WoW and FFXI have) or if they do soar@launch, will they keep some art people working 'round the clock or rehash skins constantly. I love that little stone-skull shield, I'd hate--if I did keep playing--to see that beautiful skin reused to death.

There's also an amazing wooden shield with a red wareagle painted on it, gorgeous.

Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug.
12 Million People have been meter spammed in heroics.
Placing bets Blizzard's "Titan" will be a wow-clone.
