As the title reads I want an MMO to come out featuring zombies and permadeath. Now tell me this wouldn't be an insanely popular game. Permadeath would keep the game refreshing in and of itself. Everyday a new struggle to stay alive or all your work is <poof> gone. I have so many ideas for a game like this that its retarded. But honestly am i the only one who wants this? |

A zombie MMO (for the PC) would be awesome.
For now, if you get Fallout New Vegas (PC only)
You can download Zombie Apocalypse mod at NewVegasNexus website. To go along with Zombie Apocalypse, you can get Nevada Skies URWLified, that has various graphics mods listed in its description. The various mods makes nights A LOT darker and more realistic. And Nevada Skies adds tons of weather to the game, rain storms, I had one that was a radioactive storm, clear natural looking skies, sandstorms and that sort of thing...tons of different weathers. If you don't want URWLified (which makes it a lot nicer, but probably a bit more graphics extensive), then there is just a regular Nevada Skies mod.
To go along with the Zombie Apocalypse...you can get RTS Real Time Settler. Makes it a lot more laggy I heard though. There is a mod called Wasteland Defense that looks to do about the same thing, which I'm going to give a shot, might be better than RTS.
The only true zombie sandbox game, Fallout New Vegas. PC version only, as consoles don't get PLAYER made mods.
If you have PC though, enjoy the zombie apocalypse :) Oh by the way, say good bye to all your quest NPCs :P Check out my nature/animal/relaxing music channel on Youtube! My game channel on Youtube! |

In any case, there is a zombie mmo being made. Though I don't know the details. |

die2nite.com browser game that requires an insane amount of teamwork and truly simulates the zombie apocalypse. Once your dead it is time for a restart with a new group of strangers to try to survive it all over again. Game is alot of fun and a weird mix of game/forums. |

But also after playing DCUO, I've got even higher hopes now for this game. MMO's on console have definite advantages to compensate for their limitations. As much as people with the bleeding-edge rigs hate it, standardized hardware can mean a faster, more efficient production cycle. Instead of making the various graphic sets to cover a spectrum of system settings, they just need to make 480i, 720p, 1080i/p. They only have the small set of hardware revisions that the console has to test against vs the infinite build options that PC can cover. Plus, standardized interface and hardware means the only determining factors of gameplay will be playerskill and internet connection. Everyones hardware will be responding the same, if its choppy for one person in a group, its probably choppy for the other. Can't blame your computer being slow for dying, because everyones on the same machine.
As for handling death, there should be a few server types to accomodate different levels of survivalism. Have the "normal" mode servers where theres some death penalty, but its not brutal. An Expert server thats semi-permadeath, where your corpse can get rescued to give you another life. And then a "STALKER on Master" server, where most people will be killed by dogs and have their corpse's dragged off into the woods within 2hrs or rolling the char. Having permadeath as an opt-in option with its own rewards is good, but 100%-permadeath is not something that will draw enough people in to play, and basically excludes meaningful PvP. If it takes 40hrs+ to reach peak-efficiency in the game, its not as appealing to lose all that to the broad market, and any game getting any real funding is being backed with the assumption that it targets a broad market unless specifically otherwise marketed. Soften those blows though, have servers where the game can be learned, others where the penalties/challenge can be increased, and "master-class" servers where people can get put in their places. Lets Push Things Forward I knew I would live to design games at age 7, issue 5 of Nintendo Power. Support games with subs when you believe in their potential, even in spite of their flaws. |

/moving right along
Console games are designed with one major trait built into their design; to be short and closed ended. this is so as to not hang players up on anyone title, therebye stifling the desire for whichever junk title is being released in the next quarter. (not to mention the rental market) this is just not conducive to any of the factors of MMO's. this game will will be hot for a month or two, mostly due to the fact it is in ANYWAY related to zombies, but as the console fans do what console fans ALWAYS do, move along to the next flashy commericial game, this one will feel as obsolete as any console game does, 3 + months following its release. its a terrible waste of resources and a suicidally poor business plan. im sure the game would've been otherwise great (hey! i love zombies in any form) but once this game gets outed as NOT the next L4D type game, most pimply faced shooter lovers will toss it over their shoulders. |

Originally posted by Sovrath My first thoughts too, but it could be done, maybe something like.. if your guy "dies" he becomes an AI controlled zombie! Hah, that would be pretty interesting if you think about it. Have AI controlled characters of dead players, with all their current stats/gear/etc, it would make the game increasingly more challenging as time went on, and it would never be the same repeated experience because of it. |

Originally posted by ace5572 I think a zombie MMO with permadeath would be really popular if it wasn't action-based. Perhaps a zombie game which focuses on survival, not shooting zombies FPS style, would fit with permadeath far far better. Or just a RPG, either turn based or not-twitch-based MMORPG style.
A RPG is also the perfect way to handle this because twitch-based games with permadeath can drive people to rage far far easier than a game where STRATEGY, planning, and character development are far far more important. A game with permadeath where you know, before you go, if you will live or die: to at least some degree. |

It's really sad to me the way people's brains shut down at the word 'permadeath.' You can still have advancement and permadeath at the same time. MMOs have done it before, and, in some ways, it's more addictive than having one character. "Love not only bears with others' faults, but cheerfully submits to whatever suffering or inconvenience that such forbearance makes necessary." |

Yes please. I'd love the intense feeling of having to fight for survival every day and it would make events so friggin scary too... Like, it'd be like living it because your friends might actually feel bad if they get you killed, you might actually rage quit if you die, and depending on how the graphics are, you may actually shit your pants when something jumps out at you. Might have to put some kind of disclaimer up so you don't get sued for people smashing their monitors though... Edit; Yeah there could still be tons of advancement. Mostly reputation with NPC's and skills though. Don't put all of combat on stats if there's gonna be permadeath. It's best if it's like FPS for ranged weapons and like Idk hammer on CTRL to attack and hold ALT to block for melee. Some of it's on how you want to do the zombies too. Is there infection, or are they animated corpses? Infection could put an interesting spin on PVP and, who knows, maybe you'll get your char back some day when the cure is found. |

Originally posted by Sovrath I see it yes! And it gave me an Idea actually. What if, every time a player Dies, they turn in to a Zombie NPC that adds to the population of Zombies in the world? So the player comes back with a different Avatar, and the struggle continues :)
