Here is why LOTRO wins (just to add - I've played all of these games except "Wizard hmm 101" with LOTRO the longest of course as life subscription, to date - over 2 years for free. It was #1 even before it went F2P, at least it was for me.)":

Kind of a no-brainer. Turbine's "Freemium" model is by leaps and bounds the best business "F2P" model for both the customer and the company. Well deserved Turbine, good on you and keep it up! ------------------------- |

Having played lotro since release and also eq2x, imo lotro wins hands dowwn..not just because it has a better story driven content it is also that lotro gives you the oportunity to get to max lvl without costing you a fortune unlike eq2x which basically wants your money and they take every oportunity to grab it off you.not saying that i dont like eq2,i think its a great game . |

Originally posted by reanor I am a big fan of LOTRO and do think it deserved the win on this list, but there is still plenty of grind to be found. I've just recently started playing both LOTRO and DDO and theyre both alot of fun. Kudos to Turbine for allowing people to enjoy both of those games for free :D Check out my blogs here: http://www.mmorpg.com/blogs/Grand_Nagus |

Definitely well deserved. Turbine is really making a name for itself as an awesome company. I think the loss of DDO has to go hand in hand with the fact there's no way to just instantly teleport to your party and go, and that they doubled ALL races prices with the release of Half-Orcs and Half-Elves, which was a GIANT slap in the face. LOTRO's deed system and gaining cash shop points from it is revolutionary, I just wish some of these idiot companies like Cryptic and SOE would get their heads out of their rears and use it themselves. Instead, they're pretty much running glorified infinite trials, or reinvented the "pay to win" aspect of the Korean Cash Shops. Had it not been for Turbine and LOTRO, I'd have given up on F2P gaming being anything beyond a crap-shoot. |

from that list i only enjoyed playing RoM to a certain point... vindictus has such great graphics but dungeon grinder gameplay sux balls, eq2x not for me, plain boring and not gonna pay to pass adept skills (rather sub for a better game),. LOTRO is a really good looking game and gameplay is really nice too, and the lore is great, but for some reason i got sick of it before reachin lvl 15-20, cant stand those few races and weird, unique yet boring classes... still great game, grats on wining, tho i moved on to something else |

ROM and Vindictus were the only real "F2P" competitiors on this list, the others were P2P titiles that tanked and converted to the "fremium" model to prosper. "What gamers want ... is new game play patterns different from what they've experienced before" - Axehilt |

How does this game win F2P game of the year when it is virtually impossible to actually "play" for free?
Oh well, I know, but well, ah nvm. |

It's not quite that clear cut. Wizard101 is actually a fantastic game, but it isn't really P2P - you only get 10 levels free before you need to subscribe. In my opinion, it's just as good as LotRO, albeit much simplier due to the wider audience. <3 |

Not only is there quite a bit of content for free, but as you play you gain points (for free) that you can use to buy other content (for free). So basically, you play for free AND Turbine pays YOU to play. I take it you haven't actually looked at their system very much? If that's not free to play I don't know what is. Just because you have to either earn (by playing for FREE) or buy (unless you earn it by playing for FREE) *extra* content doesn't mean all the other content (there's a lot) isn't free. I don't think it's any surprise that a game built to the P2P standards, which are MUCH higher than the cash shop fueled grindfests and wow clones that dominate the F2P landscape, got the highest rating. LotRO is a good game. The opposite end of the spectrum, Runes of Magic, is a bad game. Actually, the only one I think is in the wrong spot is Wiz101. It sets itself out to be a kid's game, and does so very well. The "free to try" nature of it is friendly towards kids and their cautious parents. I would rate Wiz101 much higher. It's actually pretty good, for a kid's game. Important facts: |

It's not a ranking, it's a poll. It's entirely possible had the voters ranked the games, EQ2 would have come out 2nd. |
