Not what I expect from AAA title in 2011. Quests are very bland compared to WOW: Cata and bad combat quickly turned me off |

Gamers will never be satisfied. No game is perfect. I have played this Beta and it is a good game. Is it groundbreaking? No. Does it have most the elements to be a long lasting game? Yes. Does it need improvement? Yes its Closed Beta!!!. I haven't played the endgame, but this is one of the better closed betas in the last 5 years no doubt. Graphics are good enough, not everyone can upgrade their computer. If it had great graphics you would complain about server population, because not everyone could run it on their systems. The main problem today is most gamers can't stick with a game because they have been trained to like their first mmorpg experience. Nothing is going to be like your first serious MMorpg. |

Finally NDA has ended, now we can talk about beta here To me Rift try to take all good concept from others mmorpg (instance, no zoning, wild map, raid, group, craft, faction, title, battleground, pvp point to buy stuffs, dynamic event, collection, exploit...) and they are right to do like this. Game engine can handle low config. It is not 60 FPS but at least you don't have low FPS peak like Vanguard. But it is true they need to improve FPS for all big config : some tester have low FPS even on big config, some have good FPS I just hope their multiple soul and mutiple role (spéc) will be equilibrate. It will be sad to see the ultimate 3 souls combinaison (and point spent) to has the best tank for example. At the moment i can tell you that Beastmaster pet is very good as soul with no points spent in, for any warrior type :) |

I sort of have to agree with what someone said prior, gamers will never really be satisfied. I haven't tried Rift, but it looked promising from the videos and reviews. Wasn't this the game everyone was saying was going to overcome TERA/WoW/GW2? Just seems funny that everyone was raving about this game, then the NDA lifts and suddenly some of these same people are screaming bloody murder. Is it possible people just don't have a clue what they want? Or maybe now that the free ride is coming to a rapid close, it seems less appealing...? Whatever the case may be, there is no better example than this for why people should chill and stop with the 'my game is the best game evar!'s. If these are the kinds of people gamers have become, clearly nothing will ever live up to expectation, so probably best to stop getting the hopes up in the first place. Hmmm...this article was posted today and is already out of date. Apparently he did not get into beta 2 or his review would have been much different. There were tons of changes between the two concerning rifts, souls, etc that made things better, harder, but still needs work. Nothing is perfect yet, but much of the information in the article above simply was true in beta 2. And considering the content revealed for beta 3 today I would have expected the reviewer to have updated this article before posting it. Looking at information concerning souls for beta 3 shows the system he reports here is not as he has posted. System was the same for 1 and 2, but will be fairly different for beta 3. For instance you won't have one soul when you first start, but two before you face your first mob, according to Scott Hartsman. This to me is cool because you will feel truly unique and heroic compared to the normal NPCs you may fight with during your tutorial. Also there will be more than 51 points to spend. Rift rewards in beta 2 were much better and less trash loot. I actually found use for everything I got from the rifts. However you can't solo a rift now. At least none that I saw. I was able to solo a foothold, but only with the use of one of my rift rewards. These rewards saved my bacon more than once. Rifts are not perfect by any means and they do need work to make them better, more dynamic and scalable and less predictable. Invasions were murder in beta 2. Though much of the community is hitting this point hard, rifts don't feel dynamic or unpredictable, but the skeleton is there and they can tweak it to make it better than any PQ I've seen in games. Still they were heads and shoulders above beta 1. Quests on the Guardian side were much different than those on the Defiant side. Most quests on the Defiant side seemed to consist of kill x or this or y of that and collect s of those. All quests felt the same to me, with slightly different lore. However the Guardian side there seemed to be much more in the area of investigating this or that, putting out fires, helping drowning soldiers, etc. You just felt more useful and the kill x of this or that and fedex quests were broken up a lot better. They were there to be sure, but on a whole things were more interesting. Also beta 1 scale was much smaller than beta 2, areas were more crammed in feeling on the Defiant side and it did not feel very big as an area. You feel packed into the zone with everyone else. In response to feedback on this they were working on the Guardian area during beta 1 and it shows. The area is much more spread out, you don't feel crammed and packed in most of the time and the feel is just more grand scale wise. I actually look forward to see how the Defiant starting area is now as it should have been tweaked for beta 3 and should be more spread out like the Guardian side. I can understand the reviewer not having information from beta 2 if he wasn't in it (which seems odd since he works for a game site like MMORPG, didn't anyone have access to beta 2?), but not including the changes announced for beta 3 when they were announced to the world? Seems kinda lazy. this review should have been looked over. Looks like it was written immediately after beta 1 and was waiting for NDA lift. Really really not accurate anymore (well some of it's still true of course) and gives a confusing perspective since it based on such old information. |

Now I'm using an alienware all in wonder with dual 280m GTX's and can run the game on ultra, but I was running on high/custom settings and it very much reminded me of EQ. Slightly less photo realistic, but NOTHING like WoW and it's cartoon looks. Character models were very detailed and armor was layered and interesting looking. Some weapons left much to be desired in the two handed variety, but graphics look nothing like this for me, my wife or anyone in my guild. Maybe you should get a better video rig? *shrugs* I don't know, but the game is very beautifully rendered. I'll have to dig up some of my screens. |

My thoughts on Rift are this, game mixes WOW and Warhammer Online. Public quests are a lot like rifts. Graphics are very close to Warhammer Online. Souls are the big change here from other games they are sorta like a talent tree in WOW only better. I think this is where a lot of the game will make it much better. Rift system also is something that is going to make it better than playing the same ole WOW game.
I expect this game to have many servers and many people playing it, but for me they need to do a lot more balancing for it to be super fun for me. Also I was lacking the fast paced game-play I am looking for in these types of games. Combat seemed really like hitting the same keys over and over (Marksmen on bosses I was really only hitting 3 keys. 1 1 1 1 1 3, 1 1 1 1 2, 1 1 1 1 1 2, 1 1 1 1 1 2, 1 1 1 1 1 3) there was little to no thought into it. No reaction to interrupts I was looking for. Some elites (bosses) are immune to stuns and interrupts already.
Im waiting to see what they do with the extra points, how that plays out, rewards for doing rifts should be coming in better, and higher end content. So far looks like Rift has the making of a great game and I see many people playing it. -MrDDT |

To be honest i felt it was a great Beta 1 and Beta 2. I enjoyed all the different classes and soul trees. I know some classes may need tweaking but they delieved some great content for being Closed Beta 1 and Beta 2 it felt very polished. As for the single starting area for each faction i agree it sucked but atleast u didnt do the exact same quests they seemed to differ by change what you were to do as your class. I forget exactly what they were but it was very cool i think for defiant warriors you saved fallen warrior souls and as a mage you saved the souls of the damned or something like that basically the undead guys. The game felt great to play. and you can Mix Souls your not stuck with just 1 souls or 3 soul. you can even by different roles and as you unlock more and more souls assuming they mean you can unlock every soul to your class that would be just sick to be able to swap out Riftblade and Reaver with my Pally soul or my Warlord Soul without having to make a whole new character not to mention the classes are fun just to play they may be the same as any other MMO but after you have been around MMOs for 10+ years they all feel the same LOL oh and dont forget it was all only UNique once Everquest if your as old as me in MMO years yes i understand MUDs were out before Everquest but nothing is Equal to the first time i made a Dark Elf ShadowKnight. But this game gave me back that feel i had watching my Paladin fly across the screen with his shield Bash lol It was Very enjoyable is all i can say i have posted lots of info and my feedback on the rift forums on suggestions i have made and reported bugs/exploits/glitches Hope you did the same so that the game can even be better by launch I look forward to seeing you in Beta 3 on 12/28/10 |

God i wish i could take back my 15 minutes of reading your post. Rfit is full of plan & crap. 2011 Worst MMO, RIFT rank first! Combat mechanics is crap. GW2 offers better combat mechanics than RIFT and not to mention all those other recent F2P MMO from Gamingo, Perfect-World and Neowiz. I mean they're are F2P MMO that offers better fighting mechanics and graphics than same old genre from Trion. Be creative please! Rift-public quest is borrowed from War-Hammer. After all that time, nothing else new! The quests (kill X, get Y), I mean really! Is this a dynamic and innovative MMO for 2011? Clearly not! Instance was boring as hell, nothing challanging enough, and I feels like i am in a wonderland! There no whatsoever tutorial for any of the crafting system. No oh-shit tactics for squishie class like rogue, ranger and mage. Give em a sprint skill! That will be great fun! The map screen way too big which give you a bat in your face kind of feeling and it annoying! Death penalty too hash especialy when the healer is killed by a raid from opposing fraction. It got even worst when the defiant commandors raided town on top of the present rifft's settlement in that same area. Should i go on..haa i had enough! |

Why why why do dev breaking in to the MMO genre keep repeating the same old mechanics? New eye candy with slightly different approach in each how you play whack a mole with the UI watching and micro managing numbers, but it's still the same old auto target healer, tank etc tired approach that kept looking over it's shoulder at wow for answers during its development. Whoopie! Another fast food restaurant just opened and you get get more of the same to eat!

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, about this game that hasn't been ripped off from somewhere else. No effort whatsoever has been made to add an original touch to this stolen content. Add a 3D engine adapted (I assume they've "stolen" this from someone else, too) by someone with as much programming skill as my mother, and you've got a game which may look highly polished, but which is so unoriginal, so uninspiring, and so absolutely dreadfully dull as to make a random, Chinese WoW knockoff appear revolutionary. [object Window] One of the most embarrassingly awful games I[object Window]ve ever played. I was invited to the second beta as well as the first, but by then I had already gotten absolutely bored of the game, and ended up uninstalling it after playing with the character creator for a few minutes. [object Window] This game deserves to fail. |

Played first beta seemed a solid polished game unfortunately the whole art and animation style did not appeal to me in the slightest nor did wow, war art or lotro animations and rift is the child of the aforementioned 3. |

“Some players will decry the game due to the fact that they’re being handheld through the leveling process by the structure of quests.”
If your hand is being held from level one to top level then yes, I would have to ask do the designers still think the game needs to be in tutorial mode at the penultimate level? Hopefully by then we can assume players have learnt something about the game? But this may just be through the first couple of levels which is fine.
“They’re essentially supposed to be the main draw of the game, but as I spent more time playing I found myself avoiding them and going around them on my adventures.”
This could be a major issue, the rewards need to mean something for a player now, even if its just some gold.
“It’s really an amazingly deep and yet simple idea and one that I can’t believe hasn’t been thought of before.”
Sounds somewhat like the DDO upto three class sytem but with skill trees as a twist, interesting though.
“For crafting to matter, the crafted goods have to be as good or better than what players can obtain from other parts of the game.”
You need to divorce crafting from loot to make it work. Crafting makes the best PvE gear and quests (then raids) make the best PvP gear would be the ideal in my eyes.

I enjoyed the beta, it was a welcome change to play a game that felt as if it was actually ready for release.
However I left the beta doubtful that I would subscribe. The game is too much of a clone. It would be among the best FTP but a PTP has to offer something new, and this didnt. |
