I can honestly say that SWG (and I only played up until light-speed came out and they F****D THE THING UP!) was pretty easy to learn. Yes there was a lot to take in, but it wasn't difficult at all. Mind you SWG was my first MMO (aside from Diablo II which wasn't really a true MMORPG), so I had no preconceptions on how an MMORPG should be.

SWG was, and always will be, one of my favorite games.

EVE on the other hand did get difficult. It wasn't trying to figure out how to do everything (others did that for me, I just followed in their footsteps). What WAS really difficult was keeping up with the damn politics in the game. Alliances constantly rising and falling. Internal conflict, etc.
It was actually easier to just follow real world politics in my opinion.

What I would liek to add to this list though is FFXIV. Square has no idea what they ar edoing anymore. Not only did they create crap, but they don't even provide the user information on how to use it! At least with EVE and SWG they gave you something to go on. There was documentation available and the Devs opened their mouths to say soemthing useful now and then.

In comparison... games like WoW have no learning curve. You pop in and go at it, and that pretty much seems to be the way of things. I'm not saying that's bad though, as it brought MMO's to the mainstream and set a standard that all others must meet.

I'll be honest though, I really REALLY liked the class system in SWG, the way you could master various things, then change to soemthing else if you wanted. Master Teras Kasai will always be THE most badass melee class ever, as far as I'm concerned.

Holy Crap....can we please STFU about "PRE-NGE" already.

It's gone, it happened (many many years ago) so get freekin' over it.

It happend four years ago, not 'many many'. You gotta be in the infamous "30 is old and 5 years ago was right after World War 2"-age =)

I'm actually 49 years old....maybe my life experience allows me to deal with life's 'little" things better than most.

Seriously though....people still crying about a game change that happened several years ago.

How pathetic.

The only pathetic thing here is troll posts like yours.  Just to educate you, SWG had some very unique things about it that have not been seen in the MMO community since NGE.   Nothing wrong with lamenting a play style that no longer exists anyplace in the MMO genre.  It is a shame is so many of you never got the chance to experience it.  The game actually had depth to it that none of these modern MMO's come close to matching.

Tru dat. It really is a shame that a lot of the great things from SWG will likely never be seen in other games... ever.

Very true. SWG (Pre NGE) was a lot of fun. Then dear old Smed and his buddies screwed it all up.

EVE is all about the internal and external politics at the corp and alliance level.  Given all of the factors, its just as bad as real world politics. But learning to play it well is a non trivial exercise.

As for SE and FFXIV... They have obviously lost their way years back. They seem to be in perma seige mode, and treat information about the games dynamics like they are state secrets.  A more isolated/insulated group of Dev's would be difficult to imagine. But so long as they have a core group of True Believers, they will continue on their current path.

World of Warcraft is the ten ton gorilla of the MMO world.  It has years worth of content, and coming up on 6 years old is very well polished, and easy to pick up. Its the one game that I keep coming back to over the years. Which of course is why I've ended up with five 80's. ^^

I like this list a lot.

But I do think Ultima Online should have received a special mentions - Not because it had a difficult learning curve to it (Which it sort-of did, after a fashion) but because it was the first graphical, 'mainstream' MMO, had a TON of mythology around its gameplay (My favorite being 'Being well-fed helps raise skills!'), and EVERYONE was a noob with no clear idea of how to 'win' the game.

Good times, good times.

Yes I will admit I am a SWG Pre-CU fanboy.  God I loved that learning curve in the game, finding out the path you took just plainly sucks at combat or makes no usable commadities (sp).  I actually find learning curves to be a good thing, this face rolling "I Win" style of most MMO's now is just getting too much.  (Ya know who ya are...)

Please stop talking bout EVE or i'll go start playing and camp gates again -_-, don't want to do that anymore but somehow it's compelling, it calls you, it tells you to pop that pod, to ransom that freighter...

Thing is, when u -10 when u quit the game, there ain't much u can do when u go back :D They should allow people to "redeem" themselves after like 6 month of stoppage.

About AO it wasn't that complicated ? U just had to figure out how to put ur points, specially when u had that shiny MKIV armor (oh luved STORM).

I'd put EQ on it tho, not cuz of the character progression but because the game was god damn hard back then, groups were wiped in regular dungeons and had to corpse drag and all, with "train to the zone, run or die !!" and stuff like this. That doesn't happen anymore these days :(

You're a Hardcore Survivor!

You not only survived the zombie apocalypse, but did it with style! Your mastery of zombie knowledge, survival tactics, and weaponry is nearly unmatched. Congratulations, for you are hardcore!

1. Eve

2. Ultima

3. Anarchy

4. SWG

5. Fallen Earth

Would have been my choices, but like any MMO out there, once repetition sets in, its a piece of cake on any mmo title.

"u" can redeem yourself. (1) Make sure you have Fast Talk trained to 5; this adds 25% to the sec status boosts you get for killing rats. (2) Buy a T1 cruiser like a Rupture or something (3) If you cant fit it in your local lo-sec pocket, ask a friend or just use an alt to fly a basic ratting fit in. Pro-Tip™: Bring a couple of spare sets. (3) Work a quiet lo-sec constellation; kill 1 BS rat in each system (or a BC if there are no BS), then go to the next system. Ideally you want to cycle through about 4-5 systems. (4) DONT pirate while you do this, Jesus, what the hell is wrong with you?

Should take no more than a few days to repair your sec to the point where you can enter 0.5 sec space at which point you're basically OK, because systems like Airaken sell pretty much whatever you need, albeit at something of a markup. But hey, you wanted to be a criminal, right?

EVE - Agreed. I could never get passed harvesting for some reason.

SWG - I am torn... I agree that the learning curve was tough.. but it is STILL the only game listed that I actually ENJOYED learning the curve! All the other games on the list frustrated me trying to learn.

As far as it being a 'dead' game.. that is no longer true. I mastered DOC and RANGER the ol'fashioned way on    swgemu  . The game I love has finally been reborn. I wonder if an of the editors here will take a crack at writing about it.

One more thing.. I noticed that whenever someone writes and article about MMO's they are always very careful about mentioning SWG (pre-cu). You know it will bring us fanatics out of the wood-work? And why isn't this fact noticed by MMO creators?

Another fine article this is!

I dont agree at all that Darkfall is hard to learn people are just to lazy to invest in there character and then whine its to much grind but game is not hard.It just dont have a constant guidance(help is very usefull for newbees btw) and get use to ui and combat but thats learned in few hours.

Dyslexics of the world...UNTIE!

I would even consider today's SWG crafting a beast master hard for someone that has never done it. If you look at all aspects of harvesting components, gathering stations, and collecting the different DNA samples/beast components, you must admit that it would be complicated for anyone that is not familiar with them.

Whats up with people claiming EvE got easier? Because of the tutorial? Are you kidding? That only covers the most basic stuff, if you take into account all the new stuff like T2/Booster/T3 Production, T3 ships and their special rules, supercaps and special modules, jump bridges and covert jump bridges, or hell just pos and sovereignity in general then EvE actually gets harder each patch. Also try leading a corp doing that, its like running a raid with 200 people half of which are new to the instance and have no TS, 23h a day.

When i started EvE in 2004 sure it was hard, but after a couple months i was set and understood all that there was to do in EvE(admittedly not much). Nowadays i hardly know my way around half the game, it just has gotten too much. I have a rough idea about how booster production or T3/T2 production works for example, but if you ever tried to run a full production cycle of T2/T3/Boosters in one corp ... its hell.

Things like this chart make it alot easier, but really, it doesn't mention how you actually get most of the stuff you need. To that comes a long list of other things you need to be capable and knowledgable about:

1. PvP rules in general and special rules involving wormholes. For example you can use WHs with aggression(they can follow you after shooting you!), but there may be a certain timer on using the same WH again, depending on its type.

2. You need to be able to navigate in W-Space, which involves scanning and attention. If you go 3 WHs deep(meaning you jump from normal space into a WH, from which you jump into another WH not connected to normal space, from which you jump into a even "deeper" WH) you have to keep track of BMs, all the WHs mass/time limits, populations in them, their tier level etc.

3. You need to fight sleepers, Special AI rules PVE mobs. Forget what you learned during missions etc, its become invalid.

4. Logistics. Logistics. Logistics. If you want to have a continuous production, regular payouts for your employees and scouts you need to make sure that resource A ends up at fab B in time. Not as easy as its sounds with wildly changing distances due to WHs closing and reopening.

5. Operating a POS. Find that perfect balance between defense and production. Oh and you need to be in 0.0 or WH space for some things, oh the joy. Another subset of things to learn.

6. Got everything covered? Rights setup correctly so managers can work but not steal all the corps stuff? Now you can start looking at that chart and trying to figure it out. All set? Grats, your almost half the way to run a effective t3 production corp in EvE.

Lots of people dabble a bit with PvP or WHs and think its easy, but try to setup a proper production with big amounts of resources equally harvested ... its hard.

Everquest the first doesn't rate a mention? Easy enough to 'play' the game. Learning how to thrive was a different matter, particularly some classes like bard and enchanter

yup, lets just make a game where you log on and do nothing, actually why even have to log on in that case, that would just be to confusing.  Bad game design.

I think all he's saying is that complex games need good tutorials, seeing as a game's learning curve has a lot to do with the fact that the tutorials often suck.

Agreed. My graph for MO would look like this:

_____^___^_^^||||||||

The horizontal lines are when you enter the game and wander around, accomplishing absolutely nothing. The carats are for each time you read and re-read the help files, just to see if you're missing something about the "simple" process of harvesting from a tree, NONE of which are harvestable anywhere near you. That last is the brick wall you hit when you realize the few instructions provided don't actually make sense, and with arms thrown up in disgust, you mutter, "Stupid game is stupid" and uninstall.

Made me lawl . .. and think back to when I logged into MO for the first time. Didn't seem to be anything to do and I read every help file several times . .. decided to go to a cool looking dungeon and found nothing while this guy ran into me about 10 times along the way asking if I knew where the bank was but I couldn't figure out how to respond and the help file left that part out so I had to ignore him. I got bored and angry that I just wasted a couple hours searching an empty dungeon and I started jumping around until I decided to head back and became impatient so I fell and not so much on accident. Unfortunately I died and when my spirit rose from the body it got really dark and I couldn't find a temple light in the sky . .. so searched around . .. for what felt like a coupld more hours . .. and then got stuck in a wall. I wiggled my way out and started walking up the stairs and then got stuck on a stair . .. logged out.

Darkfall does have a steep learning curve . .. year and a half later and I am still learning how to play but it feels like around the 9th month was when I learned the most valuable lessons lol I wish I could go back to the beginning with what I know now lol

NEWS FLASH! A bank was robbed the other day and a man opened fire on the customers being held hostage. One customer zig-zag sprinted until he found cover. When questioned later he explained that he was a hardcore Darkfall Online player and knew just what to do.

Agree with everyone else about AO. Also amazed no one in the comments has mentioned Shadowbane, building characters from among all the races, skills, runes and gear was tough. City design, crafting, deeds, sieging moreso.

I used to win level 1 twinking contests in AO back in the good old days. Imagine spending 2 weeks several hours a day on a LEVEL ONE character to be competitive, no other game compares to AO in twinking. Another steep learning process in AO was Notum Wars pvp, tower use and placement. Great memories. MMOs today are for toddlers in comparison. Heard a rumor that during AO's heyday, the computer systems at MIT were overtaxed due to so many playing it. No idea if true, but very well could be.

SB's steep learning curve came from small squad tactical and strategic considerations as much as character design.
