Lineage II?  Trust me, it will never happen.  L2-SEA was being pushed for F2P, NCsoft Korea gave a big, strong, emphasized, shouting NO, N-O, NO.

NCsoft rather have L2-SEA shutdown and lose their playerbase (new and old alike) than make L2 free-to-play.

Whatever Thailand did or whatever happened in their market, theirs is the only f2p L2.  NCsoft will not repeat that again, not in another 10 years of L2's life.

My thought is along different lines.

I really think NCSoft could get mileage out of the F2P model by reopening two of their past games, Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa as F2P. Tabula Rasa would be a no brainer, really. It's in the can, they have a solid end game, and if they could just learn how to spawn layers correctly to fix the lag issue, it would be a solid contender. Auto Assault probably less so, but with the potential for lots of costume parts and custom cars, it seems like a no brainer to adopt to a f2p model.

If you cant afford to pay for a subscription, dont play.  Pretty soon, even the subscripers will have to fork out more money to get content they should already have.  It becomes a money grubbing fiasco.

Free to play becomes more expensive then being a subscriber, but you dont notice it, because they nickel and dime you to death.

World of Warcraft is my favorite game, but if it went free to play...I am out of there.

Sorry for the rant, I am old school.

What lag? there was only lag for the first 2-3 days.

I dont understand this F2P fetish that a lot of people have now a days. $10-$14 a month is really not that big of an issue. I heard of F2P games that cost way more then that in the long run. F2P really isnt F2P.

Dont get me wrong I play Atlantica Online which is F2P, but not because its F2P. I play it because its a great game. I would easily pay $14 a month to play it.

Before DDO went F2P no one really talked about it. Now everyone is on the band wagon.

You don't understand the desire to be able to much more easily play a wider range of games?

By playing in the microtransaction/hybrid payment games you open up the choice available to you on a daily basis, for many players sticking to one game rapidly leads to boredom, the ability to play multuiple titles casually is for many players tyhe preferable option, sure you can argue that you could just swap games that you sub to each month but that's not the degree of flexibility that I am talking about here, I mean being able to play what suited your mood on a daily basis much better.

i dont understand that you're able to play a game, have a life (do you) play another game and then maybe another game ? You want to be able to switch game on a dayly basis, do you bring your whole guild with you ?

If you read my last reply to a F2P fan, What the point in playing 2 MMO ? Unless you're already at the endgame, and even if you are, i just dont understand... You switch game, you play with others peoples from another guild on the other game, why dont you just go play a damn solo game ???  Wait, i got friends on both game... they can pay if they play ! Then choose one or pay for both game !

Hate this fucking mentality of peoples that  just want everything !!! I want this, i want that, give me this, give me that, i dont wanna pay but the game is so fun, i'll just take millions of trials. Now i can give shit to others players that are on the trials or subs because im gonna change name on the next trial. I dont wanna pay, so i'll play a game that is F2P...

If you got a NORMAL life, how are you able to give enough time to 2 or more MMO ? Your wife work, you play ? You're a kid and daddy pay  ? You just dont work, dont get out of your home and look like a vampire because its hot ?

Explain us, those that pay to enjoy playing a game we know why we pay for, how can you play more than one MMO and have a fucking NORMAL life ???

Now, im gonna log on my P2P game that is Fallen earth and enjoy the damn game while i can because i gotta go to bed later, because im working tomorow and thats why i pay a P2P game !

Goodness me, what an angry little pent up ball of self-righteousness.

You hate that I want to have the choice?

Your whole argument stands upon the basis that I should just like things how you like them or I'm not normal?

To be honest your reply comes off as nothing more than pure unadulterated hate for anything non-subscription, you are entitled to your opinions, but you are not entitled to make character judgements to try & justify your opinions.

I am a formerly hardcore raider that dedicated 4hours a day plus to a game, a guild & a subscription, now I want to play casually & enjoy multiple games rather than be dedicated to just one, I did that for 10 years & now my gaming tastes are different, and I want to be able to choose on a whim what I want to play, I am not alone & I occupy a sizeable demographic and games companies are listening to it & creating products to cater to that, which does not mean games that suit your demographic will not get made.

I do not ask that ALL games change to F2p at all, I just would like to see more games that are open to hybridisation INCLUDING subscription options, rather than games be one or the other I'd rather they had the option to play & pay with more flexibility (I've pumped money into games for years funding their development if I liked them, either by way of sub or MT).

I have found that playing 1 sub game as my "Main game" & having several MT based games to play sporadically also stops me getting bored & burned out & quitting MMO's altogether, and I have a very normal life outside of gaming, which is my chosen hobby.

I love you Skuz.

Uptight subbers have their ways, we have ours.

I enjoyed the Skuz post, too.

I think they are making more money the question is are they making enough to really make a difference and pull new paying players in? Have they lavished new content on DDO, investment would indicate that they have more revenue. I am talking real new content hear, not some dresses and xp potions?

I believe DDO got their revenue multiplied, at least from what I heard a good hanful of months ago.  They have indeed been putting out new stuff, just haven't played much of it.  I stil subscribed 1-4 months out of the year, and spend the store points on unlocking something that I want to be able to play when I just feel like hopping on.

I should also add that f2p curbs any hostilities towards game devs. Your players will always pay you what they think it's worth. They need to suck it up and stop charging for expansions too. Gamers are not stupid anymore. What happens when an expansion comes out? Unless you love the game, you dont do anything. You sit and wait and read reviews, afterwards you buy it if its good. That lag time hurts companies, and slows down business.

Except this pretty much flies in the face of the F2P market as it exists now, which is dominated by Asian games which are then localized for the West.

Basically the Western audience has zero feedback into the game's future, or how it plays. Sometimes the game in the West is deliberately nerfed, or has much higher prices. Atlantica Online is a great example of this

After reading the entire saga of posts here, the Skuz VS State of Biggots response pretty much sums up the entire thing. Normal people get bored. Normal people, not fanbois. To avoid getting burned out on just one sub, you need to play something different for a change, that is for those people who arent able to take breaks going on vacations at the drop of a hat cause of work and time constraints, if we could we wouldnt be playing MMOs to detox from routine life anyhow .

Games going "Freemium" give you just this opportunity. So IMHO every MMO should go Freemium including (atleast) vanilla WoW to encourage more playerbase influx as well as give an option for the occasional burnout extinguisher without Having to sub for it for just a week or two's worth online time.

Just because a Freemium model hasnt been executed perfectly yet doesnt mean there never will be one such. There is always tomorrow which brings new things. So who knows, the next best MMO to make this finally work might just be the WoW-killer, that term which has become something of an oxymoron off late.

I still don't know how you can call most of these games ftp when there is no way in most of them if not all of them that you can get to end game without paying basically you get an extended trial that lasts forever with only some content available till you pay and or are limited on your lvling etc. That may fool some people for a bit but not for long. Hehe look at eqii they made it actually more expensive to play on ftp model then on the pay model to get everything.

As for games ithink that might be good to see fo ftp i would say Vanguard but just so it survives as it is a good game but doesn't have enough people in it atm. If it got more people it might get more attension from devs for it and worked on more. Probably some others as well but can't think atm. Course if vg goes same way as eq ii then forget it as that will not work as vg players are probably to smart for that:) although i guess might bring new people in for a bit.

I was very close to re-subbing to Vanguard. I ended up going back to WAR instead, but the style and depth Vanguard offers is almost bar none to anything else out there. If it went extended trial or any other type of F2P I would have a hard time not playing it. It really is a great game.

Why does shops put the milk at the end of the store? Because by letting you walk trough the whole store they know you will be buying other stuff when all you wanted was some milk..

Its the same with this new "Free To Play" I mean come on, its not free..

But it will makes people get into the game and maybe they buy one or two items in the store and then it doesnt matter if they quit when they realise they cant play the game for free.. They will make more money by introducing this "Free To Play" believe it or not :)
