I played Eve Online for a long time, and I always liked their skill system. The amount of time you played is totally independant from the skills your learn. Pretty nice if you don't have that much time to spend on playing games. It did get a bit annoying after a while though, at the end I was only waiting for skills to finish instead of playing the game... (So I quit the game) |

First off, would people please stop calling it the Morrowind system. The skill based system of Bethseda is the Elder Scrolls systems. Morrowind is the 3rd title of the Elder Scrolls. Arena being first, Daggerfall being second, and yep you guessed it Morrowind being third. Their idea has been out for over 10 years now. That said. The original poster didn't ask if you preferred skill based over exp based; nor what system of exp you like best. He asked if you would prefer faster lvling or slower. I say the answer to that lies in what you plan to offer the players. If you are lvling up fast, then you are going to have to have lots of lvls for anyone to continue your game for any length of time. And you will have to think of a lot of little improvements to the class for those lvls. People expect that you get something with each lvl advancement; and while a few hps might last them a lvl or 2 if you are not adding new skills, titles, abilities. Then again noone will play your game that long. If you decide to go the slower route, then you will not have to concern yourself so much about adding little improvements. Oh you need improvements but they can come in bigger packages, say every 5 lvls or so; and thus be something to look forward to. But the slow grind will dishearten people quickly and serious consideration of alternate advancement opportunities need to be evaluated. And there you have it. Question answered. Next? |

With Requiem... I really believe that players should get something for their hard work with each level. As a player, I found it frustrating that only by grinding 5 or 10 levels that I could use a "unique" spell or ability. What, run out of ideas? So they make UBERSKILL mk.2! Which does the same thing as the previous UBERSKILL, only it has a different icon in the ability list and is slightly more improved. Such a waste. I also found that PvP was a disappointment because of this. Say... I'm a level 24 warrior, and my opponent is a level 25. He has one level difference, so it looks like it might be a fair fight, but I really dont have a chance because he has the Ultra Power Attack of Killing that I can get next level. So he kills me with it. I'm not going to be an even match until I'm level 25, then I'll be able to fight fairly with everyone in the league of 25-29. "Levels" should be more than just a stepping stone to get to the end game, but more like a way of showing improvement (in a more grand scale, instead of "you gain some strength, dexterity, and uhh.. some speed with this ability because every 5 levels you see a new light" that's just lame in my opinion). I never liked the "you need to be this tall to ride this" mentality. So anyone can get any skill in the game by training with a trainer for the first part and how to use it (through a "tutorial" mini-arena with a few challenges to pass in order to be certified with that skill... it's different for each new skill type), then it's up to the player to improve it and make it more powerful by using it or trying different combinations of attacks or defensive moves with it. Keep in mind that levels will be determined by a different system, not points or boxes to grind on. There WILL be some grinding though, not alot, but enough to say "this next level of experience is hard to get, but it will make your journey easier". If anyone disagrees with this idea, or just has a few tweaks for it, please post! We're trying to make Requiem more than just a game by getting as much input from experienced and new players alike so we can make the game for other people, not what we think it should be. (If it means ripping out this system completely and making it a grind, then we'll do it!). |

Yes, I am aware of those games and the lineage of The Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda Softworks. Calling it the "Morrowind System" is a simple way of putting it. I'm very sorry that this upset you in such a way that you felt the need to post about it. Many apologies. |
