5 million copies in 24 hours...outside the place that bought the most per citizen. and yet we refer to it as ONLY 5mil. Really.
What game are you guys playing that sold 5 million copies in 24 hours?

Originally posted by Sauronas I agree that DoW is in no way a rip off of SC. But lets all be honest here, DoW is a derived / branch of SC. A lot of what makes DoW can be seen in early Warcraft Mods and SC 1 mods. But even with that said Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty could be considered the first mainstream PC RTS game. Its not the first RTS game, there where others that had bits and parts of what RTS elements we have, but it was the first to bring in the mainstream elements that we continue to see today. |

Originally posted by n00bit It's funny you should say that, I went home yesterday and for some reason decided to cancel mine and my wife's WoW subscription and so I did just that.
I doubt I will ever play WoW again, it was a great game but I have lost my interest enough that I have not had the urge to log in for over 4 months. The game was still being debited from my account incase I ever felt like playing again, but that's not the case. That and the fact that since I stopped spending so much time online I found that there was so much that I had more time for, I don't understand how I even had time to play with all the things I have had to do lol. So yeah, this thread is kinda spooky seeing it the very next day I cancelled my subs lol. |

EDIT: Dune II... also made by westwood. I miss the original westwood studios, they kinda made the genre. Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats. |

Originally posted by Sauronas you know, someone can like a game, and not be brainwashed. It's not like people heard helter skelter and ran to go buy SC2, people need to get over the fact that Blizzard makes quality games. Not the best, thats a matter a preference, but they have polish and good design. and like robokapp said, "What game are you guys playing that sold 5 million copies in 24 hours?" so unless you can answer that, don't quote it, with some troll based BS, cause thats what it is BS. |

And also , 5 million purchases , oh boehoe . One of my favorite RTS's got the devs bankrupt because they failed at advertisement and sold so poorly but i don't know anyone who knows that game who says it sucks. Now sure SC can't be crap to cather that many people but it sure as hell ain't as big as the hype , by miles. And i'll also add this: high sales just means one thing , it attracts the masses . Just look at MW2, one hell of a piece of crap and yet sold much , why? because the masses like simple things . Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt. |

Originally posted by Morgaren while he said it in a rather trollish way, the overall point still stands. does it matter? people can spout numbers over and over, thinking it makes their game "the best" when its mostly irrelevant.
copies sold on launch day mean they are sold entirely on hype. copies sold long after launch day show game quality. and before you bash me for hating on blizz, WoW sold and sold for years, because people enjoyed the game, I'm not saying anything bad about the company or the game. just that selling 5million copies of a game, before anyone has played the game shows that the company is good at advertising, not at game development. I have never played Starcraft, nor do I ever want to. As a matter of fact, I got the beta invite and gave it away. It will pull a few, but it won't have the impact people thinks. And if it does, it will be shortlived like always. A ton of folks quit there MMO to try new games, but they always go back. |

I finally realized after a few years I simply don't like RTS games. I think they are fundamentally flawed. Either make a Real Time Tactical like Myth from Bungie or make a real strategy turn based game like Heroes of Might and Magic series.
RTS are just a bastardization that are mediocre at the tactical end and mediocre at the logistical/strategy end. People like them because they are frenetic not because they are good. That freneticness just turns me off. If SC2 is more busy than SC1 I suppose that would be the natural progression.
The only thing I like about starcraft is Blizzard ripped off Games Workshop to a lesser extent, although still to a large extent. The best thing about Blizzard RTS's is that the units say different things when you click on them alot.
Anyway for my money the Myth 1 and 2 are twice as good as starcraft or warcraft. Both in story and gameplay.

Originally posted by Lienhart Or they did play SC1, thought it was ok, and aren't drinking the same 'SC2 is the second coming' kool-aid that Blizz fanbots are drinking. Did geeks learning nothing from The Phantom Menace? Hype leads to the dark side, and it's never as good as the first time. Oh, and LAN play, lmao. |

Originally posted by gestalt11 Agreed. I do think there's a few good RTS games though. Company of Heroes and the Total War series (although TW has sucky mp). Sadly that's the only ones I can think of. |

Sad thing is that really is not the case.. Blizzard was seeking license from Games Workshop but GW (at the time) did not like what they seen and they felt they did not have enough control over the game. So they ended up denying the license to Blizzard. In return Blizzard made the required changes so that the game would not fall under some sort of gray / black hole area as far as the IP goes. They then released the game and road the wave of success it brought. One could say its bad luck on GW's part. As far the game ripping off something of GW. It does no more then your standard fantasy RPG does DnD. All games start based upon some idea / vision that the creator was inspired by something they seen, experienced, felt, ect. |

RTS =/ MMO =/ FPS
Different games for different folks. Don't expect MMO popluation to fall much, if any at all, just because SC2 came out. People who like MMO's won't necessariliy like RTS games like Starcraft 2. People who like FPS games may not necessarily like RTS games. I loved SC1, I'll play SC2 when I have time. But do people realize it's OK to play multiple games, different types of games, without canceling or quitting one or the other?
Luckily for me I'm a nerd and I happen to like all 3 styles of games. So I do play a bit of WoW, a bit of CS:Source, and soon a bit of SC2. EQ1-AC1-DAOC-FFXI-L2-EQ2-WoW-DDO-GW-LoTR-VG-WAR |

Originally posted by just2duh Pretty much this lol, I liked SC and all and it was fun but I quit playing for a reason. Sure I could pick up the new SC but if it there isn't a drastic difference between SC and SC2 I will likely only have fun for a very short period of time and be done with it in a week or less. Realistically this is basically a waste of cash, you're buying something you already owned and played to death just because it's seen some minor updates and a graphics overhaul. |

Originally posted by Thomas2006 It's funny because if they really did rip off the idea for SC from GW then that means both of there best titles are basically ripped off lol. They went to the WarHammer guys and wanted to make WarCraft (The RTS) based on their IP. They said no so Bliz changed just enough to get around the licensing and make WarCraft lol.
Would be funny if it turned out they ripped off another IP for Diablo lol. |

RTS means Real Time Strategy but in reality its Rush Time Slaughter... Someone here that still knows that "Westwood" did a mission based RTS mech game called "Crescent Hawks Revenge" b4 their first hit called "Dune 2" ?
Btw Xfire shows a sharp decline in every MMO activity so prepare for more server merges in the near future ;P "Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion.Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness.Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy.Let's face it,you can't Torquemada anything!"
