Square Enix has announced that the Collector's Edition PC version of their sophomore MMO effort Final Fantasy XIV will be hitting store shelves on September 22nd, 2010 priced at $74.99. while the standard edition will launch roughly a week later on September 30th at $49.99.

That's the good news.

The bad news? Hopes for a simultaneous release on both the PC and PS3 have been dashed, as the PS3 version won't make it until March 2011.

Ouch.

The PC Collector's Edition will include a behind-the-scenes DVD, a Final Fantasy XIV branded tumbler, a branded security token, a travel journal replete with concept art, an Onion Helm in-game item, the standard 30 days free of game time, a buddy pass for a friend, a voucher for a Right of Passage certificate (each with its own stamped serial number), and boxart illustrated by famed Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano.

The standard PC version will include the game disc, manual, and the requisite free 30 days of gameplay.

The game's subscription will run you $12.99/month, with an additional $3.00 for each extra character on the account, up to a maximum of eight. However, a single "retainer" character will be offered free of charge. This retainer character is non-playable but can be used to maintain item sales and storage. Additional retainer characters can be purchased for $1.00.

Beta and pre-order details were also revealed today. The beta is scheduled to go live sometime this July, and pre-orders are set to begin today. Standard edition pre-order customers will receive Garlond Goggles which will offer bonus experience rates, while Collector's Edition pre-orders will receive the aforementioned Onion Helm in-game item.

Wow i didn't think it would be coming out so soon.  Even though I am sure many people( including myself) are bummed that the ps3 release will be so late, at least we can enjoy fewer bugs and the typical launch problems.

A lot sooner than I expected. Such excitement!

Yes. Each additional character will cost you an extra $3.00/month.

I don't think I got it right but we will only have 1 character per account with the purchase?

Sure hope not at least 2 or 3 but not 1 slot only "free".

@ Hyanmen some people like to play more then one race specially since they could add new races after they launch the game...

Since the male Miqo'te won't be in at launch but from what they said it will be available later on shouldn't have to start from fresh again at least they could have the gear, ecc from their first character.

Twas like that in FFXI, but it was 1$ per character, and they could actually be played.

I wonder what sparked the move to divide them from being playable and 'retainers' though...

Yes, just like in FFXI (which also charged extra per character) one character can be every class and craft leaving very little reason for alts besides Bank / AH mules.

Well, what caused Blizzard to sell ponies for like 25+ bucks? =/

Retainers sound like 'mules' of this game if they're even needed.

So why will it cost $3 extra /month for alts if people dont need them?

Good news for the FF fans, maybe we try it when the Ps3 version is done.

Dang, the PS3 version is delayed all the way till March 2011? That's kind of a bummer. Any idea if we'll be able to use the same account for both PC and PS3, or would you need two separate accounts?

There is usually layered reasons for such a thing, but for money alone?

Yeah, i'll buy it.

Finally, a worthwhile MMO will be released this year! A lot of us MMO gamers are waiting for a new game this year and this is a good start to keep us occupied until SW: TOR comes out.

This is true, because many people are likely to base the classes they choose for a character based on the race, and whether it seems suiting to them. So they would have a galkan warrior, taru mage, etc. (i refuse to call them anything else)

In a way though, it's just as vain.

This is great news.  I HOPE that there will be a digital STEAM editon.  I would much rather just download it and have it that way instead of a boxed product.

Momo sucks, I have proof.
