Before anyone jumps on the "not everyone can be Gordon Freeman" bandwagon, I realise that.  But not everyone HAS to be GF.  After all, he has no special skills.  He just picks up what he finds and uses it as a weapon.

However, think about that for a moment, and put yourself in the shoes of the other resistance fighters, scientists, etc.  The basic story line follows on from the single player games in that the resistance is fighting back against the Combine.

  • Yes, its an IP, but not one whose background is completely set in stone.  However, the background that IS in place is enough to set an MMO on it.
  • The main antagonists are already established: the Combine.
  • Locations:  These could vary from different cities with expanses of open land, sewers and canals between them, being patrolled by Combine soldiers, to forests.
  • Progression System:  There could be either a skill based system or a level based system or a mixture.
  • Harvesting Materials:  Due to the combine, raw materials are scarce and so items have to be salvaged (harvesting the materials) in order to make new armour / weapons.
  • Crafting:  There could be crafting professions to make or improve armour / weapons or make chemicals.  Maybe even reverse engineering Combine tech.
  • Vehicles:  Already play a part in the IP and therefore could be utilised in an MMO.
  • Factions:  Perhaps players could choose whether to fight as resistance or combine.
  • There could be appearances from the characters from the single player games in the MMO.
Just a thought, thats all :)

Hmmm... I don't know, but I'm digging Quake Live beta :D But a Halo mmofps would be awesome. I think a HL mmofps would be pretty good.

I would be curious to check it out.  I love the Half life games and the world depicted in the games.

I still say it would make for one hell of a badass movie if it was done be someone that loved the series and put the right amount of money behind it.

Although with my luck if anyone ever does finally make it into a movie it will end up being Uwe Boll.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

hmm nah, doesen´t work for a mmo, its just the lonely, sometimes creepy, atmosphere that keep you pumped out, and the puzzle that envolve the screnario and on and on.

Sometimes you just dont wanna you good game memories corrupted by greedy suits =p

now: GW2 (10 80s).
Dark Souls 2.
future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

I think a Half Life MMO has more footing than a Halo one. Neither seem to have an economic/market concerns in the settings, but each has it's own perks within the lore that fit well with an MMO-styled game.

Halo has a natural class setup, if you were to be part of covenant forces (maybe you have to unlock a Spartan, but people would hate that). There's no real customization or point to social gatherings outside of PvP, unless you really wanted to explore the 'food nipple' as an ideal meeting ground. It would basically just be a giant FPSMMO with revolving PvP goals, a lot like APB.

Halflife on the other hand makes me think of MXO. Because in HL2's timeframe there was a resistance that had to stay hidden while being in the cities. Imagine living daily life in the opening moments of HL2, having to outrun combines or risk calling an unsurmountable amount of backup after you. A game where subtlety would matter, and you spend more time trying to blend in so that the PvE doesn't mind you until you are ready to blast faces.

It's actually mmofps (eg. ShadowBane, PlanetSide, WWIIOL). Economics are mmorpg, which is far from what most HALO players would play imo, apart from us that play them... though mmofps players being ready for a new mmofps. Anyway, mmofps's have progression and all that, but rank, perk and body count takes precedence over anything else. Generally it comes down to control point captures, battles on a large scale, holding one inch of territory. Insanity more or less, complete pandemonium. doesn’t even need to make sense, just like the existing multi-player HALO doesn’t. My vote would be for HALO, but HL would work too. HALO has the cool vehicles though :D

Shadwobane very much had an economy... kind of insulting to lump it in as a MMOFPS when it was a MMORPG (much more so than most of the games claiming to be so today).

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

If only Auto Assault were still around...lol.

Shadowbane is a pet peeve.  Really enjoyed that game before the Throne of Oblivion beta.  Most people I know left the game because of that, headed over to the WoW beta, and we all played a part in that disgrace.  It is a heavy burden at times...

I guess the main thing that drew me to this thread was the Half-Life thing, the fact that [R]age has been down for too long this time, how this MMORPG.com site has basically become MMO.com, and well...I'm waiting for the most recent trial to finish downloading (though, I know it will be epic fail - I want to give it a shot)...

Precisely, the premise is basically a dictatorship state where the players and npcs are being oppressed and have to keep their heads down and go unnoticed.  The action wouldn't necessarily have to be contained solely inside a city landscape either. The HL2 series had many different suburban terrain types (empty canals, villages inhabited by facehuggers, forests, open roads littered with debris).  Then of course, theres the possibility of "off world" terrain areas.

Character progression could be in the form of Resistance Ranks, better armour and weaponry, skills and abilities (being able to build bombs, throw grenades farther, firing an automatic weapon without the sight wandering, etc).  Area progression could be controlled by keys and key cards.  There could be a common currency and a Black (Mesa) Market auction house or other market system.

Players could use some buildings for housing.

A mission system could involve such tasks as seeking out replacement parts for vehicles, gathering debris to salvage materials, taking out a particular individual and trimming down the patrol numbers which help other players complete their own missions.

Ultimately the goal would be to take down the Combine, but to do so means fighting your way up through the ranks.  But with every official you take down, another can take its place (thus dealing with the whole "respawn" issue inherent in many MMOs).

To me, a Half Life MMO is a natural progression of the HL2 series.  A persistent world were the battle to save Mankind is ongoing.
