And what about those of us who are not RPers but popped up in this thread to defend RP?

Every community has it's elitists, it's drama queens and it's asshats.  Being on an "RP" server isn't an innoculation against things which exist in the MMO community as a whole.  So I can't see calling out the RP community solely for what exists in the community as a whole.  That's not to say that the RPers don't have unique issues.

The greatest damage to RP comes from homoginization.  MMOs are generally built around combat and to participate in the content everyone has to be a fearless adventurer.  No one is allowed to be deathly and irrationally afraid of worms to the point where they can't participate in the content.  So everyone is a battle hardened warrior of some kind who always casts the right spell/buff/heal at the right time or they'd find themselves sitting around with nothing to do in game.  Not even role players are willing to put up with in game incompetence, be it real or feigned.  Try RPing a crafter for once.

Also you've got more jilted/unrequited lovers, wrongly accussed and wounded soul characters than you can shake a stick at in the role playing community.  Too many people seem to think that Role Playing is spewing a long tale of woe to everyone they meet.  Everyone is up to scheming for world domination or foiling some nefarious plot for world domination.  Murder, rape, kdnapping and death are every day occurances, sure, but they don't happen to the same people every single day of their lives.  But that's what you get in the RP world.  How about a nice RP session about eating your favorite breakfast or on how pretty the flowers are today?  Give the huge events a rest for a week.

Then there is the incessant plague of vampirism that blights the RP world.  I'm sure it's only gotten worse with the advent of Twilight.  Thanks to that particular series the Vampire has been toppled from the lofty perch of baddest mother to stalk the night down to angst ridden emo kids who fall in love with their food.  (Thank the gods the Wolfman is still out there tear assing around the woods at night killing the unwary, spiking babies off the ground and generally ruining everyone's sleep.)  But where ever you go on whatever server you're bound to run into the vampire (probably spelled VampYre) squad walking around IN BROAD DAYLIGHT!  Every other vampire should be required to fall on a stake and re roll as a tax collector or a dentist.  You know ... something thar really scares the bejebus out of everyone.

Then there is the group who gets into RP for the sake of trying to get some action.  You know cyb0rz.  The crew who runs around with their virtual fly unbuttoned.  Yet somehow this whole lascivious crew runs riot and no one gets pregnant or gets a social disease.

Finally there are the emotional black holes who are into RP to deal with their own real life issues.  They suck everyone around them into their vortex of despair and moodiness.  The wounded butterfly crowd convinced that the world is responsible for their lot in life and instead of escaping it in game they bring it in game under the guise of role playing and use every dungeon crawl as a group therapy session.  A good rule of thumb is if your character is dealing with the same kind of angst you're dealing with in Real Life, delete the character and start over.  I know gaming is cheaper than therapy, but come on.

I'm sure there are a bunch I missed.  However before anyone gets to feeling at all superior remember that these types exist in all facets of the community and there is a good chance you've been in at least one of these catagories more than once and probably this week.

Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.

Watch out, Jaime.  A few of these guys look like they want to start writing columns for MMORPG themselves.  You might be encouraging your own replacements.

Hrmm, didn't think people really did any serious role playing anymore, haven't seen many games that really support it well.

I did dabble in it a bit back when I played DAOC about 5 or 6 years ago, was part of Shadowclan and while not many people role played, we always stayed in character both within the clan and to the outside world.

Rare did we go OOC and that was only in private tells, and we had to use the official 'language' and alphabet.

That said, they were a great bunch of guys and I didn't run into any of the problems mentioned in the article.  Sure, sometimes I'd be corrected for incorrect language, but never in a mean way, only someone trying to be helpful with my diction.

Guess there's a darker side to the whole RP scene, though I would think a quick /ignore would pretty much solve any issues you had with a disturbed individual or group.

Try the European RP servers in Lotro and AoC if you fancy giving RP a go again.

Role Playing in MMOs is mostly an excersize in futility. If the simple act of playing the game breaks RP immersion, what's the damn point? And this is the case in almost every single MMO. The issues Jaime mentions in the article arise from such a set of conditions where a RP community needs to not only do the role playing, but also enforce arbitrary rules they themselves invent and modify on the fly, because anyone simply playing the game can not be interacted with normally.

Which is why EVE rocks. I RP, you don't, we play the game together and it works well for everyone.

Thirded! My mother was very active in the SCA and seeing what she went through made me want to never join that organization.

"There are also many who become falsely attached, who forget that sacred wall between in-character and out-of-character dealings. They suddenly latch on to you, demanding all of your time, attention, gold and leveling services to the point they will throw a fit and threaten to do unspeakable things if you don't oblige them. Worst of all, they will try and turn you into the villain if you don't cave into their sudden, secret emotional needs for someone to give them all the attention they demand, so they can continue to dwell in a fantasy world where you might actually give a damn about them."

I had this experience with someone in my LOTRO kinship. This person was very emotionally needy and became upset if you were not constantly grouping or chatting with them. They really drained you emotionally, and it got to the point I didn't want to play anymore, because this person was there everytime I logged in. Fortunately, they ended joining another kinship, of perhaps more like minded people.

For every hardcore RPer as you have described them that exists, there are 5000 PvP griefers who have no other interest than to make you their own personal content.  It's easy to get rid of an RPer like those you describe, I've done it a few times - just come up with an in-story reason why you can no longer communicate with them.  There's no (legal) way to take the douchebag out of a griefer, though.

So who did you come on to, and get rejected by, on Moon Guard this time, Jaime?

Well its obvious you have bad experience with role-players and now vent here how bad they are and even hate them.

What you think when you join a roleplay server not to role play?

Or roleplayers dont mind when you role play?

Its same with join a pvp server when your carebear and then whine and cry why they attack you and not leave you alone.

Op your whole topic about role play is silly and sad.

If you have bad experience dont blame roleplayers blame yourself for not have the discipline to roleplay or dont understand why people roleplay on a roleplay server is your mistake not theres.

I realy btw dont understand why you have so manytimes these problems ingame with many things ive read in your topics while i myself play sinds 99 mmo's and almost never have these problems and im also rather fanatic mmo player.

Prolly you play wrong games for wrong reasons it seems?

Learn to adept or blend in instead vent your frustration on forums or just dont join servers play styles you dont like, seems simple to me, is my advice OP.

O M G ;_;

What happened?

I'm a roleplayer, and a damn hardcore one, albeit a hardcore forum roleplayer, and nobody I've roleplayed with (that's a lie, there's... 3 people) were elitist, and none of them were mean about it... in WoW roleplays too! ... Which usually died after the first few pages or when the plot went nowhere because you never should make a WoW roleplay without first knowing what happens after a certain point-- say: Nexus. All I knew was that it was pretty at the time.

Thus, I come to conclusion that forum roleplaying, as long as you're fluent in a language (i think lol.there doomb) is at least a better place to start out due to its open endedness and overall, from my experience, much nicer group of people not looking to cyber. Well, all roleplaying's good, because the elitists who are caught up in their own little world can literally go to hell until they come to terms with what they are, or write a 30 page backstory for one of their characters. Or a novel. Novels are good too. Then, maybe, they'll learn that they're not the best of the best, even after that.

Ayegh. I gotta get into MMO Roleplaying, because it encourages, no, forces me to use dialogue on my characters. Seriously, my favorite character ever concieved of, after almost 2 years, is finally developing a voice, and even then it's not what I'm really shooting for. Poor Arika.

Oh god, though, I wonder how Arika will fare in WoW-- at best she's a strong vampire that no, doesn't glow, if I reveal the least. At worst... well you'll just have to find out.

I end this post on one statement that I never thought would apply to RPers too, seeing as the most elititst people I knew would at least be friendly and help people, and yes, sometimes complain, and yes, sometimes start debates about rules to better ensure good RP etiquette. They were good, friendly people, thuogh. Maybe it's because the board I started on wasn't afraid to ban repeat offenders to the basic rules of writing (capitols lol :D).

Oh, right, the statement: Fuck Elitists. Help your kin god fucking dammit, and quit your bitching when they make a mistake with the lore or something. It takes effort to help them, but it's worth it. *Holds up a trembling middle finger* Ah, I should cough up the money for WoW again and start helping. Even though I much prefer typing actions fragment.

People that put themselves above others put me in a bad mood.

You certainly should not let one bad experience put you off anything. I remember a girl I knew telling us about how she started at a rowing club which she thought was a going to be a nice knock around on a lake. When she got there late she was met by an arse of a guy who clearly thought the club events were an army drill and he was the Sergeant Major. She got a funny story out of it to tell us all, but she never tried rowing again. Like I said to her, OK forget that club but don’t give up on rowing. Same here really.

Patience, little-stoned-puppy, patience.

Be too quick to jump the gun and you'll fail to realize how diverse people can be... and you'll end up being the cause for many more facepalms.

lol I had to say that, even if it's more along the lines of nerdy-socially-awkward humor.

You had already proved that she might have just had a bad experience with your over-assumptious attitude. Congratulations.

I'm defending that... er... kid from your big mouth with one of my own, and you still jumped the gun and assumed I was crusading for the RPs. Bash roleplaying, but don't attack other people-- if you were some ubercore RPer, I wouldn't talk to you any differently. So... yeah, best advice I can give: open your eyes, and calm down just a tad.

Edit: Let me reinstate what you failed to scroll up and read: there are elitist RPers out there who attack others. You lowered yourself to their level when you attacked someone defending a hobby, so, what? that makes you any better than them?

Interesting, Jamie.

All I can say is this: I haven't encountered any of the vitriol you have in over twenty years of gaming and ten years of online gaming.  And I'm a role-player.

Then again, I suppose it boils down to this old fable:

Two men were traveling from one town to another.  The first man reached a crossroads and there was an old man there standing at the crossroads.

The first traveler asked the old man, "Hail!  What is the town like that I am traveling to?"

The old man replied, "What is the town like from which you come?"

The first traveler replied, "It is a wonderful place, full of friendly people and compassionate neighbors.  I am sad to leave, but I look forward to seeing what is in the next town."

The old man smiled.  "You should continue on, the town ahead is full of the same: happy people and friendly folk."

The first traveler passed on into the new town, and the second traveler came up to the old man.  He asked the same question, "What is this town like that I am heading towards?"

The old man repeated his question, "What was the town like that you came from?"

Differing from the first traveler, the second man said, "The town I came from is mean and nasty, full of backstabbing people who are out for your blood."

The old man nodded sagely and gave him a completely different answer than he gave the first man - "Well, I would head back, then.  The town ahead is full of more hatred and strife.  You won't find anything different."

Moral of the story:

You tend to find what you think you'll find; or in other words: You tend to find what you're looking for.

Oh, to follow up:

Where are you finding people actually roleplaying now on MMOs?  Please give links and locations.  I haven't seen it in quite a while; elite or otherwise.
