Well i've finally pretty much finished putting system together.  Everything is fine for most part.  Except I switched DVD drives at last minute. (After I had got done with Win7 install)  I went with a Blu Ray Drive (See link below).  Win 7 of course see's it right off the bat.  My problem is.  The drive is only seeing CD's so far.  I pulled out my Mass Effect 2 DVD so I could install it.  But the Drive does not seem to notice that there is a dvd in it.  Pop a CD in it, and it spins up right away.  Have yet to try it with Blu-Ray disc though.  It's an odd problem, that I have never had before, and I've had some pretty weird problems before.  Any idea's from you tech guru's?  I could pop the other drive back in, but I'd rather not.

Well, most likely do you either have a SATA cable that is bad or you blue ray player doesn't work as it should.

1. Try another SATA cable.

2. Try your old player and see if it can read DVDs from it. If it can you most likely have a faulty blue ray player. Sometimes you are unlucky and get one that doesn't work, particularly if you bought a cheap brand.

I'll just worry about it later for now, since it's late.  If push comes to shove, i'll just buy another drive.  Since I need to buy a new video card as well.  Nvidia 8600GTS got it up and running, but if I want to game, going to need something better.  Still haven't decided what kind of card to get yet either.  Just know that it's going to be nvidia.  Has to work with a 450watt PSU.  Definitely won't be top of the line lol.  Any recommendations?

The BR drive could be bad, I'd try the suggestion listed above first.

If your old drive works fine, then it's the BR drive.

If the old drive does not work either it could be a filter problem which could be caused by burning/ripping software.

Just out of curousity, are you planning on spending more time watching BR movies, or playing 3D games on your computer?  Because if you are going to spend more time playing games I'd recommend returning the BR drive and upgrading your power supply and getting a better video card.

I own zero Blu Ray movies at the moment.  The big Blu Ray hype hasn't caught hold of me yet.  Though I do use my Xbox360 in HD modes.  Haven't really decided about card yet.  I don't need a super high end card.  Mainly because 2010 outside of Star Wars The Old Republic.  Will probably be my last real gaming year.  The only real major releases I've bought lately were Left 4 Dead 2, Fallout 3, Dragon Age Origins, and Mass Effect 2.  None of the other games have really interested me (i.e Modern Warfare 2).  The gamer spirit is dying, and I just wanted a PC to play the games I do enjoy now, and possibly in future *looks at SW: The Old Republic & Final Fantasy XIV* But I doubt either of them will take a super computer to run.  So I was thinking something lower end like a 250GTS.  *shrug* Just not sure yet.

Even though Windows recognized the drive right away, I really recommend installing the drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Optical drives don't require drivers to be installed.  Do you mean update the firmware?  That might be a good idea, if the old drive works.

It auto updated the firmware to 2.00.  Which was actually released on 7th of April.  I wonder if it was the firmware update that is causing it.  Didn't even think to try DVD before the firmware update it did.  Need to keep old dvd drive in other PC.  So i'll probably just go ahead and stop by like Best Buy and get a cheap DVD-Drive.  Hell I might even do an external one.  I spent 25 mins getting the cables just right inside.

Definitely install the drivers for it, just because windows 7 detects doesn't necessarily mean it's going to work 100%. Install the proper drivers for it then if it still doesn't work you then can proceed with getting a replacement.

Check a few threads down, someone had a very similar problem. They posted the fix they found, might work for you too:

I was able to get it working by downloading something from the MS site called Mats_Run.dvd. Most likely it was a problem with the drivers. Anyways, everything is gtg now.

Thanks for pointing that out.  Problem is still there.  Just doesn't make sense that it will play CD's fine, but won't notice when I put a DVD in drive.
