WTF?!?!?!

Texas BOE Removes Jefferson From History Standard

Who are these people that are coming up with these decisions?  I thought neo-cons always complained that other were rewriting history.

Is it clear now that neither of these groups are for freedom and liberty?

First off. I think this was a Dumb move.

Second... How many people should we put in there? You could easly fill 2 History Books with just the Major players from US history...

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. WTF?  Your children learn their own nation's history in a high school world history course?

That explains a lot.

They are not removing Jefferson from history books just that aspect of history.

This is really nitpicking. Anyone that wants to learn about History needs to go to the source. This is the new standard in college education, using original sources, not a synopsis from an Academician.

If you want to know about the Enlightenment, then you read works by authors that lived during the Enlightenment.

If you want to study about Jefferson this is what you read:

http://libertyonline.hypermall.com/Jefferson/index.html

I wouldn't worry to much. The kids with any brains will go on to post-secondary education and read the original works of these authors and make their own conclusions.

The rest will never remember the bullshit they were taught in high school. You'll be lucky if they remember enough material to pass the test, and by the end of the following summer they won't even remember what the Enlightenment was, much less any details about it.

I think removing Jeffersom from the History Books is always a mistake.  He was the most anti-government pro-freedom founding father.  Also it was a very pivitol time in history.  The Confederation of the Rhine, the French Revolution, and the evolution of modern day democracy.

That's odd. I saw a segment on T.V. last night (I live in texas) interviewing one of the heads of the board mentioning there should be MORE emphasis on our founding father of which included T. Jefferson. I'm calling B.S. on this blogger and he's probably just an angry upset lefty pants because they're putting christian teachings in the books mentioning that the country was founded on christian beliefs and what not.

Just another idiotic butt hurt blogger.

But dont' forget that George Washington, Hamilton, and John Adams who all came before Jefferson supported a strong national government, and the Federalist Party.

Jefferson supported the REPUBLICAN party, and he didn't gain control until 3 Presidential terms after the founding of America.

So it's disingenuous to say the country was founded on Jeffersonian principles of "anti-government".

That was POLITICS that came AFTER the founding of the country.

it's also worth noting that Jefferson, because of his anti government stance gutted the Navy, slashing the Budget by 2/3's.

This bit him in the ass during the war of 1812 with Britain, and he was wishing he had a stronger Navy.

Also worthy of note that Jefferson spouted a bunch of things like the current republicans, saying this is unconstitutional, that is unconstitutional.

However, Jefferson often bypassed the Constitution when it suited him. He tried to get rid of Federalist Judges using politics, and was overruled by the Supreme Court.

He also made the  Louisiana purchase, even though he thought it was unconstitutional. He did it because he wanted the land, since he thought America's future lay in agrarian pursuits, and because it was popular.

So, Jefferson was happy to follow the Constitution, when it suited his purposes, and happy not to when he had other policies he wanted to implement.

Think about what you posted then think real hard why we would learn about our history in a world history course. We have a U.S. History course and a World History course but not seeing how the U.S. is intertwined with the world throughout recent history is poor comprehension at best.

Taking out any of the founding fathers for any subject is wrong and schools must remain neutral.

This is just another reason why government needs to stay out of our lives.

If you have children in school in Texas, I strongly suggest moving.

He posts that but response 3 and 23 capture why there is sadly no escape but only a cornered wall defense.

It's worse than you think: it's been reported for years that textbook publishers kowtow to Texas standards and sell the same texts to other states. So there might not be any place to move to. This Texan high school teacher is just as appalled as you are.

Since Texas is such a large market, their standards and California's pretty much dominate the market. So textbooks are written for Texas, or for California, and other states must just buy one or the other.

I hope response #68 at least gives a realization that some of us religious folk don't want to delete history.

68

Okay, these guys are insane. I'm a Christian conservative, and even I think that this is nuts. We aren't all like this, just some rather extreme people. The Enlightenment is one of the most important period in the last several hundred years, and should be taught. I agree with you fully on that.

Maybe they are making room to slip creationism in history since it's not working so well in science class.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

It's discussed and covered in both. It's just a matter of how much which depends on if you are learning World History or U.S. History how deeply discussed it will be.

Sounds like redundancy to me.  When I took a world history course in school I learned about the history of other regions of the world.  When I learned about national history I learned about my nation's history which included our history within the global community.

If Jefferson is discussed in US history is there really any need for him to be covered again in a world history course?

Its been a While. But when I took world History it was 80% World History. Although that might have been my Teacher.. not sure.
