Momento Mori

It doesn't make me want to go back. I was with the game from beta up til NGE. I enjoyed my time, more so than all but 1 or maybe 2 other MMOs that I have played. That said, SOE made their choice in that they didn't want me as a player or consumer. I accepted that and have since made the decision not to purchase any Sony product. Such is the way of business and buyer/seller relations. Choices get made.

When I post and SWG is the topic, yes, I remember the good times and am thankful for them. That said, if SOE opened a "classic" server today I wouldn't go back.

This pretty much sums up my thinking as well.  I'd also add that anything I'd want to go back to is no longer there: the skill system, all of the professions I had mastered or was working on, the huge player population, one of my favourite servers, the sense of being immersed in an open-ended StarWars universe.

It's simply not the game or the community atmosphere I enjoyed being part of.  Actually, when I've been tempted to return, a lot of the posts here served as a reality-check, and a welcome one.

Oddly enough, those types of posts always seem to coincide with posts on the OBoards that where the lonely playerbase decides they need to convince others to play the game through making posts on other forums about how great the game is, how much it has improved, and how the only people who don't agree that the game is just great haven't logged into it in years.  Purely a coincidence I'm sure...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices that lol. Just last week players were discussing how they need to start their own marketing campaign on youtube with "kewl player made vids". Which I guess is fine, but damn...some people are so pleased to pay $15/mo to do al the stuff SoE fails to do.

FYI...free month coming shortly :)

It happens about every six months or so, usually a few weeks following a vet trial promotion ends.  That has always made the 'The only reason you make negative comments about the game is because you haven't tried it recently' extra humorous.  It is always proceeded by a thread on the OBoard wondering how to increase the number of players, which is eventually blamed on former players, which leads to the idea to spam other forums with glowing praise for SWG.

There are at least two other threads on the OBoard pushing the same idea as the one you linked.

I played swg from day one! The class system was awesome. The crafting was top notch, I think I was the 3rd ever jedi unlocked. I say this because I remember reading about some chick that was the 1st unlock. The I remember My friend unlocking about 1 week after and I came about 1 week after him unlocking on the ID class. At that point jedi sucked so much it was not funny.  Stacked TKA was whooping ass! THe worst thing SOE ever did was put holocrons in the game.

I dunno if the dev would have stuck to the game and supported it. But I guess they were losing a lot of players so in comes the NGE. What ever...

At which point one of the players will make a suggestion that perhaps SOE should make a change in this way or that way, followed by the rest of the parasitic cannibalistic community telling said poster to GTFO and never come back for daring say anything contradictory to SOE... then they go back to wondering why thier community is shrinking.

Just an observation, I'm not against or for slamming SOE or SWG, it's all interesting reading :-).

Well, the more popular Sci-Fi IP virtual world was litterially destroyed, and to some, by The Empire, in which millions ... ok, hundreds of thousands of voices cried out.

And as of now, SWG is just a shell of what it could have been.

It takes a great feat to screw up a live virtual world based on the most popular Sci-Fi IP.  Had this been of some other IP, I believe there would not be much discussion taking place and mostly just a dead ghost forum... something like Tabula Rasa.

And that is why...

Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.

I will be so glad when SWG finally closes. Yes, it is a selfish desire, sorry. Actually, I am not so sorry. SWG is a cancer. It is the poster child for MMO developer incompetence. It's the design document for what not to do with a game.

A once vibrant, player created community is now a Chernobyl-esque wasteland, with the radiated corpses of potential and idea lying in a blackened, scorched crater of what once was a Star Wars Galaxy. It's an unnatural abomination. Kind of like a Lich. All living things hate it because it goes against nature.

As a side thought, I wonder whatever happened to that lying scumbag, Thunderheart.

Hardly, I've seen and played what SWG has to offer now ........ IMO its trash. It's a bad version of WoW with a Star Wars skin.

"Does Posting about SWG Make Us Want to Go Back?"

Depends on what you're trying to get at.

If you mean going back to SWG the way it stands now, no way in freakin' hell.  The game is irrecovably and completely different from the version that I loved (Pre-CU).  Not to mention we're talking about SOE here.  Their handling of the once very tight knit and interdependent player community was atrocious.  They were willing to change the game completely knowing full well they would lose many of its then-current playerbase in the hopes of getting new and more numerous players by simplifying the game.  They were willing to forsake the community and already paying customers in trying to get a piece of Blizzard's WoW Pie.

F**k SOE.  When I left SWG due to the NGE, I swore I'd never touch an SOE product again, and I have held true to that.  I was curious about Vanguard then I heard that SOE got a hold of it.  Glad I never went that way.  Same thing with Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Now, if you mean that I'd like to go back to the Pre-CU days of SWG?  Yes.  I very much would love to play that again.  I get reminded of it when I play subsequent MMOs since Pre-CU SWG.  I miss the depth of character development and the freedom I had in skills due to the Skillpoint / Template System.  I miss how crafting and trade was as much a deep form of gameplay as combat.  I miss how non-combat gameplay was as valid and fun a form of gameplay as combat.

No MMORPG ever since Pre-CU SWG has ever, EVER been comparable or come close to that.  No MMORPG has had things like players solely playing as crafters / merchants, entertainers (purely social), etc., and those players were absolutely content in playing only that, and never having lifted a weapon in serious combat.  And us combat folks were having fun out there in the wilds or in PvP.  The player economy was among the best in MMOs, period.

But the community is something SOE completely destroyed.  A respectably large playerbase that was tight knit and dependent on another.  Players needed one another for various functions in gameplay.  Entertainers and Merchants / Crafters were just as important to the game as Combat oriented.  Players socialized.  Grouping was the norm and not the exception... it's not like the game forced you to group, but it was just the normal style of play and how social people were in that game.

I'm sure the vets here remember those hunting expeditions.  Remember those days of Hunting Groups on Dathomir and the other "Death Worlds?"  And the rests at player made camps every now and then?  How long those groups lasted?  Miss those days of gaming.

Or how about the Cantinas and how packed they could be with players just hanging around talking and watching / listening to their favorite player Entertainers?  How about the once densely packed Cantinas at Coronet, Mos Eisley, Bestine, and Theed?  So many players hanging around there.  But that's all gone now.

Again, I do want to go back to that kind of gameplay and community.  But it will not be with SWG, since SOE utterly destroyed the game and the community.  It doesn't help that MMOs ever since those days of MMO releases just are the same and boring.  IMO, it's not a stretch to say MMOs these days are the same, just different skins and maybe a gimmick or two.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." The amount of selective memory regarding the pre-CU game always amuses me.  People forget that at the time the community was already decimated by the holocron grind.  PvP was killed by imbalances in the skill system and the game was riddled with horrific bugs.

Yes, the NGE was bad but don't make pre-CU the golden age it never was.

Most pre-cu players will not argue with you that there were alot of things wrong.  But SOE went and screwed up the things that were right and still didn't fix what was wrong.

I personally could have lived with the CU, but the NGE was horrific.

And to add to that, I think if another game had come along with many of the elements people liked in pre-cu, many more may have moved on. But there has been nothing comparable to the orignal/CU in almost 5 years. A few went to EvE, a few went to Rysom, but most of the folks I know have not found a replacement for SWG.

SWG was ahead of its time, in many ways, and was certainly released before its time. Yes, there were plenty of warts and bugs in SWG, and incomplete stuff, but all the good stuff in there made up for that for many of us.

Until SOE labotomized it.

Just imagine where the Pre-CU might have been with 7 years of polish, refinement, fixes, and additions.

Hell, imagine the CU with 5 years of the same.

I don't think there is any possible argument at this point that the game would not only be far better than it is now, but that it wouldn't have one foot in the grave with the other resting on a bananna peel like it is today.
