I love them because they dared to take a chance and make superhero games, then gave DOJ money for the Champions IP (I am a Hero gamer, own 5th, 5th R&E, and 6th editions), and made a fun game with that IP. CO isn't based on the Hero system, but it does a good job capturing the feel of Champions. I also love them because they are doing much better with STO so far (based on videos and interviews) than the original Star Trek MMO was going to be. Go look up the original Star Trek MMO that was never completed, it was utterly craptacular. |

I'm in a wait and see mode on this one. It seems the game is more combat orientated not offering the exploration side as you would think Star Trek would have. |

I'm looking forward to playing this game and I haven't even touched the Beta. The screenshots and trailers have been enough to peak interest, but Cryptic has been on the ball in explaining everything they can about the game in news releases and interviews to show that it isn't a bunch of fluff. Unlike perpetual before them.
I really expect this to take the MMO world by storm. Not because of the IP or even the new approach tothis particular MMO, but because it will be both cool and FUN to play. |

Originally posted by ebonyblade02 Eh, it looks like it is just WoW in space with Star Trek skins, more or less. Nothing that interesting. Heck, there doesn't even seem to be a significant non-combat element to the game, which is rather a shame -- there are interesting ways to do diplomacy and such. When my friends who were excited about this game heard that there were healing, tank, and dps ships, they lost interest pretty quick. |

HAha, everybody says that the next MMO is just another WoW reskin. They even said that of Aion, I think the new trailer for Aion Vision got that out of the way in a hurry. Accusing a game of being another WoW is just a ploy to get ppl not to play it. (Though it may be a compliment too) Craig Zinkievich has already said multiple times there would be situations that required diplomacy and a delicate hand rather than brute force. That being said, the devs have made it clear this game will cater to peoples play styles. We will not be forced into a stereo type or class we don't want to play at all. Players aren't even forced to follow the story line. The Genesis generator will be providing plenty of places to explore at your own pace. You really need to read the info on www.startrekonline.com. Read the interviews! |

Originally posted by ebonyblade02 I have read the interviews and checked things out thoroughly. There's an indication that non-combat elements can pop up, but given how little they are talked about and how they aren't detailed in any way, shape, or form, I think it highly likely they are confined to Episode content, and random content doesn't include this sort of thing (otherwise they'd be bragging and showing off the technology that let's them randomly make up diplomatic scenerios). When you see them talk about character abilities, you also only see combat abilities discussed, one doesn't get the impression other abilities even exist. If there were significant content that didn't involve combat, wouldn't they enable you to improve your performance in those situations? Seems like this isn't the case. Look at the types of officers you have. Tactical, engineering, science. They don't seem to cover diplomacy much, nor do ship or other customizations cover it. Honestly, there is basically no talk about things other than combat. Most talk about older stuff and most talk not indicating a Holy Trinity combat system are quite old (I am not familiar with anything recent for either, in fact). |

You do realize the Captain is supposed to be the diplomacy officer, right? Of all the episodes in Star Trek there are only a handful where an Ambassador is onboard ship, and even those don't have him as a prmanent member of the crew. It may not be enough that it is mentioned twice in the inteviews with Zicheivich and Massively, but that still makes part of the game. How many games do you know of have anything but the coolest and best game footage for their PR trailers? I mean the entire idea is to get people interested by showing the excitement in a game. Not boring diplomacy. |

Originally posted by ebonyblade02 There's no reason to think it makes it into the game to any meaningful degree. All abilities seem to be combat based. You act like that is perfectly sensible, but Troi was quite helpful in diplomatic endeavors, as other crewmen have been as well in all the series. I agree that PR videos show the best and most meaningful stuff from the game, and that and their lack of any significant comments is exactly why I don't think there is meaningful diplomacy in the game. A meaningful system would take a good bit of work and because of that they'd be sure to show it off. |

My thoughts exactly. I have found it difficult to believe that this game will be any good considering how little time has been put into its development. Regardless, I will at least give it a shot. I'm glad they are offering an open beta so I don't have to buy the game if it is as I suspect it will be... |

Originally posted by khartman2005 I don't believe I jumped the gun as you put it. If that was true then why did he not say "Judging by the released videos of STO I have seen posted have lead me to believe that". Do you see where I am coming from? Face it, there are tons of people that cannot follow a simple rule and will break an NDA at the drop of a hat knowing full well that a game company will rarely go after them since the cost would be prohibitive and not worth their time.
Nor does he say, "I'm in beta now, and I'm not impressed". He says he signed up for beta, and will probably play open beta. You cannot break the NDA for a game you are not given access to. If you could, half of the people on this forum would be in violation, as they condemn the game daily despite not having played it. Yes, you jumped the gun. Needless to say, if I were a beta screener and saw that post, I wouldn't want them anywhere near my game, but there is no evidence that they broke the NDA. |
