The date for the Star Trek Online Open Beta test has been announced today as beginning on January 12th, 2010 and running through to January 26th, 2010. This should give gamers on the fence about the game a solid two weeks to evaluate it and decide whether they want to be there for opening day on February 2nd, 2010. Below are some comments from Star Trek Online Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich on today's announcement:

Will be good to put some of the speculation to rest.

At first I was thrilled, now I'm "on the fence" due to the ground combat and a few other minor things that bother me. Playing in open beta will let me know if I should get this game or not so i'm excited. |

This will most likley not end well... Unless they have a very very solid product in their hands this feels abit short on testing.
But then again rumors has it that Blizzard will be releasing an expansion earlie next year so i can understand if they arre scared shitless.
Will give it the benefit of a doubt and stresstest it, also my GF is a trekkie so i guess it comes with the territory This have been a good conversation |

I'm actually surprised you don't have to pre-order or be a subscriber to fileplanet to get into the open beta, which I belive is the "norm" now. If not, then kudos to Cryptic. A little of my faith is restored into the company. |

The MMO industry really needs more adult orientated games :( |

Cryptic don't deserve the Star Trek license. I'm already woefully unimpressed by the ship combat but I have signed up for the beta so i'll test it anyway. Why are there so many cutesie, fantasy, childish MMO's. Give me blood, gore and a long lasting challenge. I don't need my hand being held along the way. Thanks. |

It would be nice to see actual beta footage and not keep getting this pre-beta stuff other than screen shots. Open Beta sounds like it will be the real deal in seeing what the game is really like once and for all. |

I'm definately in this game, even if ground combat doesn't interest me much
The internet is funny, only here can something be condemned and deemed worthless before anyone actually PLAYS the game... |

so for one of the biggest IP's available they have cracked a game out in around 2 years with beta testing in 2 months but have just recently decided to put ship interiors in and they want to release it soon? i agree cryptic dont deserve the license Currently playing : Darkfall |

Strike One: Cryptic has already made two mediocre games that are almost exact replicas of each other. Strike Two: Both games utilize massive amounts of instancing and repetitive gameplay. Strike Three: Instead of their second go-around being better they clearly showed they learned nothing their first time around, and actually became worse.
These are the reason there is zero hype for STO, and I will be sitting on the sidelines. Good luck to all. |

i can see this being made pretty quick if it's using the Cryptic engine. Really they have people down pat and they can strip out costomes focusing on facial designes cause of the ST uniforms. That really only leaves ships they need to focus on...2 years for just ships, with resources they can borrow from CO cause it can be poured back for Vehicles...quite doable |

Witness the kerfuffle-still ongoing-around the six month and lifetime subscription options for CO that was meant to guarantee STO Closed Beta access. We're more than a month in to Closed Beta and most CO subscribers still have no clue when they'll be sent an invite.
Don't get me wrong-I like and enjoy Cryptic's games, and i'm looking forward to STO. I just know how much they suck at communication. |

I'm pretty sure he is talking about the videos you can find on the net that demonstrate the combat, because he then went on to say he did sign up for beta and will test it anyways. Question. Are they going to be using RMT for STO like they did in CO? |
